  • The characteristics of intermediate-level waste treatment services are likely to have a negative effect because they act as a factor in promoting incentives of earnings management in the relationship between financial characteristics and earnings management in companies which are possible for earnings management. The researchers conducting this study attempted to empirically verify relationships between financial characteristics and earnings management against domestic construction waste disposal companies in consideration of the characteristics of intermediate-level waste disposal businesses, and the results are as follows. As construction waste disposal businesses grew larger, and the trade receivables collection period lengthened, the intention to increase profits via real activities strengthened. As the ability to generate cash via sales activities weakened, and the difference between the EBITDA margin and the operating margin was lower than the difference in industrial average ratio, discretionary accruals and earnings management via real activities were greater. In particular, there were differences in the variables of intermediate treatment business characteristics which reveal moderating effects by financial characteristics. This study is meaningful in that the scope of relationships between financial characteristics and earnings management in accounting is expanded to cover the construction waste disposal industry.

  • This study examines whether expenditures in information technology (IT) are associated with increases in Tobin's q ratios, a measure of management performance, in the banking industry. The association between IT expenditures and Tobin's q ratios is different, depending upon the banks' size (national vs regional) and strategic orientation (wholesale vs retail), in the Korean commercial banks for the period studied 1990-1996, For national commercial banks which have more clients and electronic banking systems than regional banks, IT expenditures appear to increase Tobin's q ratios. This may indicate that IT is linked to the ability to achieve economies of scale or network effects when large banks use IT as a strategic tool. The association between IT expenditures and management performance measures is also positive and statistically significant for retail-oriented banks. This research makes two important practical contributions with respect to financial reform. First, the evidence suggested that Korean commercial banks need to apply IT strategy in conjunction with restructuring strategy to be a super-bank and, hence, reap substantial competitive advantage from IT applications. Second, since the government recently encouraged commercial banks to increase credit loans as a means of financial reform, most banks tend to focus on retail banking. IT used in the retail banking sector contributes to improve management performance as the evidence suggested.

  • The ability of entrepreneurs to arrange working capital is the key to maximizing the profitability of small- and medium-sized enterprises and the wealth of entrepreneurs. The study investigates the correlation between entrepreneurs' working capital management and the profitability of SMEs listed on six Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) stock exchanges between 2019 and 2020. The secondary data is collected from the financial statements of SMEs listed on the six GCC stock exchanges. Actual sample for the research study was a total of 136 small- and medium-sized enterprises selected using purposive sampling methods. Four research models were considered in this analysis, all ending up affecting gross profits. The selected entrepreneurial SMEs were listed on six different Gulf Cooperation Council stock exchanges during 2019-2020. The fixed financial assets ratio, financial debt ratio, and company size are used as control variables and data were analyzed using multiple regression. The research results demonstrate that there is a statistically significant negative correlation between profitability measured by gross profit and cash cycle and the components of the cash cycle (including days of accounts receivable and days of inventory). The study further reveals that there is no significant correlation between gross profit and days of accounts payable.

  • At the time the local credit-card companies plunged into a liquidity crisis in 2002, S-Card was urged to take into account the estimated customer income (ECI) to enhance its customer credit evaluation function for the first time in Korean financial industry. Before this new attempt by S-Card, most credit-card companies including S-Card had performed a customer's credit evaluation based on the customer's behavioral factors such as the amount of purchase on credit, debt payment, and financial history that is provided from the Credit Bureau. However, this approach failed to measure customer's potential value which is one of the major factors in judging the customer's ability to pay, and hence, led to difficulties in risk management. The purpose of this case study is to present the better approach to sophisticated risk management for financial firms in Korea by reviewing S-Card's process of customer income estimation and its application to risk management.

  • The majority of studies was undertaken on large companies that had adopted e-Business or on the specific case of dot.com companies. However, despite this interest in the effect of the size of an organization on its approach to e-Business, little direct comparison has been undertaken between small and large companies. This study examined the differences of e-Business adoption factors and e-Business performance between large and small companies. Reviewing the literature, we suggest a research model and develop nine hypotheses to be tested. Data are collected from 109 companies Implemented e-business. The results of hypothesis testing show as follows. First, e-Business performance of efficiency has a positive influence of perceived e-Business advantage, top management support, organizational learning ability and financial slack. Second, e-Business performance of sales performance has a positive influence of top management support. Third, e-Business performance of customer satisfaction has a positive influence of technology competence, perceived e-Business advantage, top management support, financial slack and institutional pressure. Finally, there are differences in the e-business factors(perceived e-Business advantage, top management support, institutional pressure) and e-Business performance(efficiency) between large and small companies.

  • Bankruptcy is indicated by the inability of the company to meet its maturity obligations. The Covid-19 pandemic has had a terrible impact on the economy and businesses. The aim of this study to determine the effect of the ratios of activity, growth, leverage, and profitability in predicting bankruptcy projected by earnings per share (EPS). The sample of this research was non-banking financial sector companies listed on the Indonesia Stock Exchange in 2015-2019 and the purposive sampling technique was used. The data analysis method used was the logistic regression method to test the hypotheses. Company growth shows the company's ability to manage sales and generate high company profits, as such, the probability of the company experiencing bankruptcy will be lower. The results of this study showed that the debt to assets ratio (DAR), debt to equity ratio (DER), and return on assets (ROA) can predict bankruptcy. Meanwhile, this research found that the total assets turnover (TATO) ratio, sales growth, and net profit margin (NPM) cannot be used to predict bankruptcy.

  • In the modern economic context, it is apparent that there is a strong focus on the importance of global shipping industry. Recently, the world economic crisis has negatively influenced the industry with regard to both supply and demand, which has seen almost no sign of recovery. The fact that the entire industry is operating with low efficiency and at a low profit state has made all stakeholders anxious. This research examines the financial performance of the world's major shipping lines in order to give maritime stakeholders a closer look into the industry behind the ranking. Besides, the research evaluates the competitiveness of shipping companies in terms of financial ability and suggestions for strategic actions to stakeholders are provided. For these purposes, Fuzzy-C Means is used to cluster the selected lines into different groups based on their financial indices, namely liquidity, asset management, debt management and profitability. Levene's tests which are then followed by ANOVA tests are also utilized to assess the robustness of the clustering outcomes. The results indicate that liquidity, solvency and profitability act as the main criteria in the classification problem.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze structural relationships with regard to the effect of customer integration, which is a type of integration in the supply chain, and market orientation of supply chain on the resulting change in the supply chain and management performance. The results of analysis in this study are as follows: First, customer integration and market orientation had a positive effect on reducing the flexibility and uncertainty of SCM. The decreased flexibility and uncertainty of SCM had a positive effect on non-financial performance, which also had a positive effect on financial performance. Second, customer integration and market orientation had a positive effect on financial and non-financial performance indirectly by decreasing the flexibility and uncertainty of SCM. Third, the effect of customer integration and uncertainty of SCM on the flexibility of SCM changed depending on the position in the supply chain; the effect was larger in the distribution group. The implications based on the analysis results are as follows: It is expected that the ability to deal with market changes in the overall supply chain is improved by laying the foundation for cooperation through establishing information infrastructure, including sharing information with trade partners and integrating systems, and implementing customer integration based on these achievements. It is also necessary to consider the business types and characteristics of individual companies in establishing information infrastructure.
