  • Four urea-formaldehyde (UF) resins were synthesized as a particleboard (PB) binder with the four different initial formaldehyde/urea mole ratio and the final mole ratio of 1.15. The UF resins were characterized according to the standard method of resin adhesive analysis. PBs were manufactured using liquid UF resins at 5 minutes press time and 6% resin solids levels on an ovendry particle weight basis. A total of 20 PBs was fabricated for 5 panel replication per UF resin types. The panels were tested for physical strength properties per the procedure ASTM D 1037. The formaldehyde emission levels from the PBs bonded with the UF resins were tested according to 2-hour desiccator test method ASTM D 5582. There were no significant differences among UF resin types for internal bond strength of PBs. But there were significant differences among UF resin types for formaldehyde emission level of PBs. The results showed that the formaldehyde emission level was influenced by the UF resin types without reducing the adhesive performance.

  • This paper presented is a case study of a real compressor rotor of a refinery plant for high speed balancing of flexible rotor. The rotor was tested in the expert high-speed balancing facility established by KIMM at early 2004. The capability of the facility can reach 40000rpm in rotation speed and 8 ton in rotor weight for high-speed balancing. The facility performs multi-plane at-speed balancing using influence coefficient from the vibration data measured at two pedestals. The test rotor had exceeded permissible criteria of vibration at initial run. But by processing a low-speed balancing at 1000 rpm and six trial run trying to calculate influence coefficient of rotor to the range of operating speed, the final result of high-speed balancing revealed a remarkable reduce of vibration at pedestal of the rotor.

  • In recent years, developments of light weight vehicle are one of the most important issues in automotive industry. It is important to know the variations of the mechanical properties in the hydro forming process for the safe and durable design purposes. Generally, tube hydroforming process consists of three main processes such as bending, preforming, and hydroforming. It means that the strain hardening histories of final products are nonlinear. In this study, strain hardening behavior during hydroforming has been investigated by hydroforming of engine cradle as a model process. The variation of mechanical properties such as local hardness and strength were used as an index of strain hardening during respective processes. The correlationship between strength and hardness obtained from tensile test has been equivalently converted into correlation between hardness and measured strain.

  • The initial buckling of thin walled structures does not result in immediate failure. This post buckling capability is used to achieve light weight design, and final failure of thin walled structure is called crippling. To predict the failure load, empirical methods are often used for thin walled structures in design stage. But empirical method accuracy depend on geometry. In this study, experimental, empirical and numerical study of the crippling behavior of I-section beam made of carbon-epoxy are performed. The progressive failure analysis model to simulate the crippling failure is evaluated using the test results. In this study, commercial software LS-DYNA is utilized to compute the collapse load of composite specimen. Six kinds of specimens were tested in axial compression where correlation between analytical and experimental results has performed. From the results, we have partially conclude that the flange width-to-thickness ratio is found to influence the accuracy of empirical and numerical method.

  • In this study, the casting process using forged insert was applied to manufacturing a knuckle, in order to prove that application of casting process using forged insert is likely to get the effect of light weight and superior mechanical characteristic compared with existing casting products. Firstly, in the forging experiment, it was confirmed that the optimal configuration of the forged insert could be predicted by FE analysis. And by using FVM (Finite Volume Method) software, it was verified that a proposed casting design was available. To identify the mechanical characteristic of the final casting product, the microstructual observation and hardness test were performed at the boundary zone between forging and casting part.

  • To screen biologically active components of the higher fungi of Korea, the dried carpophores of Auricularia polytricha were extracted with water. The extract was examined for acute toxicity in ICR mice. A low molecular weight toxin of this fungus was purified by acetone precipitation followed by cellulose, silica gel and LH-20 Sephadex column chromatography. Major symptoms of this toxin were eye extrusion, hair erection, trembling of head, paralysis, rapid running or moving before death and depression of respiration. The median lethal doses of the total extract were 1.25 g/kg and 4.18 g/kg by i.p. and p.o. administrations, respectively. The amounts of one mouse lethal unit (MLU) of the total extract and final fraction that killed a 20-g mouse within 30 minutes were 28.5 mg/mouse and 12 mg/mouse, respectively.

  • As an important technology of the internetwork, wireless sensor network technique plays an important role in indoor localization. Non-line-of-sight (NLOS) problem has a large effect on indoor location accuracy. A location algorithm based on improved particle filter and directional probabilistic data association (IPF-DPDA) for WSN is proposed to solve NLOS issue in this paper. Firstly, the improved particle filter is proposed to reduce error of measuring distance. Then the hypothesis test is used to detect whether measurements are in LOS situations or NLOS situations for N different groups. When there are measurements in the validation gate, the corresponding association probabilities are applied to weight retained position estimate to gain final location estimation. We have improved the traditional data association and added directional information on the original basis. If the validation gate has no measured value, we make use of the Kalman prediction value to renew. Finally, simulation and experimental results show that compared with existing methods, the IPF-DPDA performance better.

  • As larger the commercial vessel is, and rougher the marine environment becomes nowadays, drag embedment type anchor (DEA) of more stable performance and higher holding power is requested to be applied on the vessel. But, the performance of DEA has not become well known to academy and industries so far, that the basic study of DEA performance and holding force for the development of new DEA of higher performance is insufficient that required. In this paper, three types of same holding category DEA model (HALL, AC-14, POOL-N, scale 1/10), which are generally applied on the commercial vessel nowadays, were tested by being horizontally dragged on the test tank, on which sand was being floored with sufficient depth, and measured the holding force of each anchor simultaneously using load cell and D/A converter. With the test results, the embedding motion was analyzed to have three different stages and the holding force of each anchor was analyzed with respect to the anchor geometry, such as shape and weight of each type of anchors, and final embedding depth.

  • The Objective of this work was to design Composite Antenna Structures (CAS) and investigate impact behavior of CAS which was various curvature. This term, CAS, indicates that structural surface becomes antenna. Constituent materials were selected considering electrical properties, dielectric constants and tangent loss as well as mechanical properties. For the antenna performance, microstrip antenna layers inserted into structural layers were designed for satellite communication at the resonant frequency of 12.5 GHz and final demonstration article was. After making five kinds of curved CAS, which radii of curvature are flat, 200, 150, 100, 50 mm. The antenna performance changed in accordance with variation of curvature. The Reflection coefficient was independent of curvature but the gain decreased with the radius of curvature. The impact test equipment was Dyna-8250 drop weight tester. The impact characteristic in accordance with curvature is maximum absorb energy is same each other. The impact energy was 8.5 J. For various Impact energy test, five energy levels 3 J, 5 J, 7 J, 10 J, 20 J were used. The performance of impact damaged antenna was estimated by measuring the return loss and the radiation pattern. It was revealed that the performance of antenna was not related to the impact damage. Because the impactor did not damage the patch directly. CAS have good impact stability for the antenna performance.

  • The design process of the motor driven tilt/telescopic steering column is established by axiomatic design approach in conceptual design stage. By selecting independent design variables for improvin g performance of the steering system, each detailed design can be carried out independently. In the detailed design, the safety in crash environment and vibration reduction are considered. An occupant analysis code SAFE(Safety Analysis For occupant crash Environment) is utilized to simulate the body block test. Segments, contact ellipsoids and spring-damper elements are used to model the steering column in SAFE. The model is verified by the result of the body block test. After the model is validated, the energy absorbing components are designed using an orthogonal array. Occupant analyses are performed for the cases of the orthogonal array. Final design is determined for the minimum occupant injury. For vibrational analysis, a finite element model of the steering column is defined for the modal analysis. The model is validated by the vibration experiment. Size and shape variables are selected for the optimization process. An optimization is conducted to minimize the weight subjected to various constraints.
