A numerical study is carried out to analyze the steady three-dimensional turbulent flow and convective heat transfer in a staggered pin-fin array with diamond shaped elements at various geometrical configurations. Steady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and energy equation are solved using a finite volume based solver. Shear stress transport (SST) model is used as turbulence closure. The computational domain is composed of one pitch of pin-fin displacement with periodic boundary conditions on the surfaces normal to the streamwise direction and the cross-streamwise direction. The numerical results for Nusselt number and friction factor are validated with experimental results. The effects of pin angle, pin height and pitch on Nusselt number, friction factor and efficiency index are investigated.
In this study, the heat transfer and flow field of condenser used on Kim-chi refrigerator is analysed with numerical method. Main objective is to present the base data for designing new condenser model with improvement of heat transfer performance. For CFD analysis, a commercial code, STAR-CCM+ was used. The water was used for the inner working fluid and the air was used for the outer fluid. The condenser type used in this study is a flat plate fin-and-tube heat exchanger. As factors for performance analysis, the effect of condenser geometry and air velocity was investigated. As a result, it has been observed that there is a suitable fin pitch with which heat transfer performance of condenser is maximized.

The measurements of velocity vectors are made in the near wake(X/d=5.0) of a circular cylinder with serrated fins. Velocity of fluid which flow through fins decreases as increasing fin height and freestream velocity and decreasing fin pitch. Therefore the velocity distribution at X/d=0.0 has lower gradient with increasing freestream velocity and fin height and decreasing fin pitch. The discontinuity of the streamwise velocity gradient is observed near the fin edge and causes significant changes in V-component velocity distribution in the near wake. This change attributes to the differences in Strouhal number and entraintment flow behavior. Increased turbulent intensity around a circular cylinder due to the serrated fins and entrainment flow are important factors for the recovery of velocity defect. The widths of velocity and turbulent intensity distribution of fin tubes are wider than those of a circular cylinder. The normalized velocity and turbulent intensity distributions with a hydraulic diameter which is proposed in this paper are in closer agreement with those of a circular cylinder.

We investigate the heat-transfer and pressure-drop characteristics of fin-and-tube heat exchangers with a copper plate or copper spiral fins. Twenty-four samples with different fin pitches and tube rows were tested. For both configurations, the effect of the fin pitch on the j factor is negligible, and the f factor increases with the fin pitch. The effect of the tube row depends on the configuration. For plate fin-and-tube heat exchangers, the j factor decreases as the row number increases; the reverse is true for spiral exchangers. We explain this by considering the flow pattern. The j factor for plate fin-and-tube heat exchangers is larger than that for spiral exchangers, and the difference decreases as the row number increases. The f factor of the plate fin-and-tube heat exchanger is also larger. We compare our results with existing predictions of correlations.
In order to control the missiles by aerodynamics, control surfaces sometime called fins are used. Deflection angles of these fins are the right control variables of the aerodynamics, but aerodynamicists prefer to use analytic variables called aileron, elevator and rudder instead of these physical variables, because these three analytic variables dominantly influence on the roll, pitch and yaw channels of the missile maneuver, respectively, and each can be assumed a linear combination of four fin deflection angles. On that basis, roll, pitch and yaw autopilots for controlling the attitudes or lateral acceleration of the missile are designed, and as a consequence outputs of each autopilot are aileron, elevator and rudder commands, respectively. In the existing fin control scheme for the typical tail-fin controlled cruciform missiles, firstly these outputs are distributed to four fin defection commands, and after that four fins are actuated by fin controllers so that their deflections follow the commands. This paper shows that performance of such control schemes can be degraded significantly when fin actuators have certain physical constraints such as slew rate, voltage or current limit, uncertainty of actuator dynamics, and so on, and propose a new control scheme which alleviates such problems. This scheme can be widely applied to various fin actuation systems. But in this paper, for convenience, tail-fin controlled cruciform missile is taken as an example, and it is shown that a proposed control scheme gives better performance than the existing one.

Recently, automobile air conditioning systems have applied an alternative refrigerant that can replace the high GWP refrigerant R134a due to the global warming problem. This study simulated the performance of an automobile climate control system with an internal heat exchanger and TXV. Refrigerant R1234yf was applied as the working fluid. Amesim, a commercial software program, was used to model the main components of the compressor, condenser, TXV, evaporator, and internal heat exchanger. As the outside temperature increased from 30℃ to 40℃, the cooling capacity of the system decreased by 3.1%, and the power consumption of the compressor increased by 17.1%. In addition, The performance characteristics of the refrigeration cycle were simulated by increasing the fin pitch of the condenser from 0.8 mm to 1.4 mm. When the fin pitch was larger than 1.0 mm, the condenser capacity decreased, and the system COP was lowered by 5.9%. When the fin pitch of the condenser was 0.8 mm, which was smaller than 1.0 mm, there was no significant change in the system performance. Hence, the optimal performance was observed at a fin pitch of 1.0 mm.

This paper presents a dynamic characteristics of flow induced vibration of circular cylinder set with inclined angle against flow direction. The effect of the cylinder bounded by spiral fin and wire on the damping of flow induced vibration is investigated, i.e., inclined angle, spiral pitch angle and number of spiral thread are studied. As the results, the cylinder with spiral fin is most effective for the damping. Also the cylinder bounded by pitch angle 50.deg. and 2 spiral thread is most effective.

An experimental study is performed to investigate the characteristics of near wake behind a circular cylinder with serrated fins using the constant temperature anemometer and through flow visualization. Previous report(Boo et al., 2001) shows that there are three different modes in vortex shedding behavior. This paper is focused on the identification of the physical reasons why the difference iss occured in vortex shedding. The through flow velocity crossing fins decreases as increasing fin height and decreasing fin pitch mainly due to the flow resistence. Vortex shedding is affected strongly by velocity distribution around fin tube, especially by the velocity gradient. The velocity distribution at X/d=0.0 has lower gradient with increasing freestream velocity and fin height and decreasing fin pitch. Those differences in velocity gradients generate different vortex shedding mechanism.

This study is concerned with the numerical analysis of performance on fin-tube heat exchanger under frosting condition. In this work, tube-by-tube method using LMED is employed. The present results are compared with O'Neal's experimental and numerical results. A standard evaporator model with 2rows-2columns is selected to investigate the effects of the various parameters such as fin pitch, air flow velocity, and humidity. The results show that frost thickness and the amount of frost per unit area decrease as fin-pitch becomes narrower. In the meantime, frost thickness and accumulation rate increase with higher inlet air humidity. It is shown that heat transfer rate increases during 30minutes and then it decreases. Heat transfer rate and the amount of frost increase with air velocity, however frost thickness does not increase over a certain velocity.

An experimental study has been performed to investigate the performance and heat transfer characteristics of the heat exchanger for simultaneous cooling/heating heat pump. The heat transfer performance was measured using an air-enthalpy calorimeter and a constant temperature water bath, to obtain the performance evaluation and analysis of a fined tube heat exchanger. Six finned tube heat exchangers with louver fin were tested under a heating condition. Air-side heat transfer and friction were presented in terms of j-factor and f-factor. The heat transfer coefficient increased with decreasing the fin pitch, j-factor and f-factor on the fin pitch and the number of tube rows decreased with increasing Reair.
