  • The performance enhancement of heat exchanger in the drying system using solar collector with evacuated tubes is analyzed. First, for this analysis, the heat loss from a reversed trapezoidal fin attached at the pipe is calculated as a function of convection characteristic number ratio, fin base length and fin tip length. Also, the optimum heat loss and fin tip length of the fin under certain conditions are presented. The overall surface effectiveness of the cylinder with reversed trapezoidal fins in the heat exchanger are shown as a function of half fin base height, fin lateral slope and fin tip length.

  • A cylindrical pin fin with variable diameter is analyzed by using the one dimensional analytical method. Heat loss and fin efficiency are presented as a function of the fin diameter, length and convection characteristic numbers ratio. The relationship between the fin diameter and convection characteristic number over the fin for the same amount of heat loss is shown. One of the results indicates the fin efficiency increases as the fin diameter increases while that decreases as the fin length increases.

  • For identification of morphometric characteristics in rainbow trout, Oncorhynchus mykiss, coho salmon, O. kisutch, and their allotriploid, twenty one body traits were measured, and the ratios of each trait to fork length, length from postorbital to the origin of caudal fin and head length were calculated. The ratios of fin length to fin height in anal, dorsal and adipose fins showed significant differences among these two species and their allotriploid $(p\leq0.01)$. Allotriploid could be distinguished easily from two parents species in the ratios of length of origin of ventral fin to fork length and anal fin length to anal fin height.

  • The purpose of this study is to examine fluctuating asymmetry of eye diameter, maxilla length, operculum length, and the number of pectoral fin ray and pelvic fin ray between ploidy and sex in diploid and triploid marine medaka, Oryzias dancena. In all experimental groups, eye diameter and maxilla length showed no significant difference between left side and right side (p>0.05). Results of operculum length in triploid male group and pectoral fin ray's number in diploid male group showed similarity ones with results of operculum length in triploid female group and pectoral fin ray's number in diploid female group (p<0.05). However, the operculum length in diploid male group and pectoral fin ray's number in triploid male group showed consinderable difference with those of operculum length in diploid female group and pectoral fin in triploid female group. Findings of pelvic fin ray's number in all groups were similar to those of pectoral fin ray's number in all groups (p<0.01).

  • Fin effectiveness and efficiency of a thermally asymmetric triangular fin are represented as a function of the ratio of fin lower surface Biot number to upper surface Biot number and the non-dimensional fin length. For this analysis, two dimensional separation of variables method is used. When fin effectiveness is 2 and efficiency is 90%, the relationship between the non-dimensional fin length and the ratio of fin lower stir(ace Biot number to upper surface Biot number is shown. The relationship between the non-dimensional fin length and the upper surface Biot number for the same condition is also presented.

  • A cylindrical pin fin with variable fin base thickness is optimized based on fixed outer radius by using the one dimensional analytic method. Heat loss from the pin fin with fixed outer radius is presented as a function of the fin length. The ratio of in length for optimum heat loss to that for the maximum heat loss is listed. The maximum heat loss and effectiveness and the fin length for the optimum heat loss are presented as a function of fin base thickness and outer radius. One of the results presents the maximum effectiveness decreases rapidly first and then decreases slowly as the fin outer radius increases.

  • Optimization of a rectangular profile annular fin with variable pipe inside radius is presented. This optimum procedure is based on fixed fin height and is made by using variables separation method. The optimum heat loss, corresponding optimum fin length and optimum fin efficiency are presented as a function of pipe inside radius, fin half height, inside fluid convection characteristic number and ambient convection characteristic number. One of results shows that the optimum fin length increases linearly with increase of pipe inside radius for fixed fin height and fin base radius.

  • A pin fin with variable fin base thickness is optimized based on the ratio of heat loss to the maximum heat loss using a two-dimensional analytic method. The temperature profile along the normalized radius position in the fin is presented. For fixed fin outer radius, the optimum heat loss, fin length and efficiency as a function of fin base thickness, outer radius, convection characteristic numbers ratio and ambient convection characteristic number are presented. One of the results shows that the effect of fin outer radius and ambient convection characteristic number on the optimum fin length is remarkable.

  • A comparison of temperature distributions along the fin length coordinate between two different fin tip boundary conditions for a circular pin fin is made by using the one-dimensional analytic method. One tip boundary condition is the actual fin tip boundary condition and fin tip temperature is arbitrarily given for another fin tip boundary condition. The value of the fin base temperature is depend on the fin base thickness and fin radius. One of the results shows that the temperature distribution along the fin length coordinate for the actual fin tip boundary condition and that for the arbitrarily given fin tip temperature are the same if the arbitrarily given fin tip temperature and the fin tip temperature for the actual fin tip boundary condition are the same.

  • Performance of a rectangular fin is investigated by a three dimensional analytical method. Heat loss and the temperature obtained from the three dimensional analysis are compared with those calculated from a two dimensional analysis. Fin effectiveness, fin resistance and fin efficiency for the rectangular fin are presented as a function of non-dimensional fin length and fin width. The results are obtained in the following : (1) heat loss calculated from the two dimensional analysis is the same as that obtained from the three dimensional analysis with adiabatic boundary condition in z-direction, (2) heat loss obtained from the two dimensional analysis approaches the value for the three dimensional analysis as the non-dimensional fin width becomes large, (3) fin effectiveness increases as non-dimensional fin length increases and non-dimensional fin width decreases, and vice versa for fin efficiency.
