Evaluation of Hydraulic Conductivity of Bentonite Filter Cake Using Modified Fluid Loss Test

  • The mixture of bentonite powder and water is generally used to maintain the stability of excavation surface during the construction of vertical cutoff walls. The filter cake on the sidewall surface is the result of filtration of slurry into the adjacent soil formation. The filter cake is believed to have a very low hydraulic conductivity compared to that of the cutoff wall. This paper evaluates hydraulic conductivities of bentonite filter cakes set up with three types of bentonites under various pressure levels. A modified fluid loss test was employed in this experiment. Theory of filtration process was reviewed to explain the procedure in the present experiment. Hydraulic conductivity of the filter cakes with consideration of the filter medium resistance was evaluated. The results of the experiment with two calculation methods and discussion are presented to show the efficiency of the modified fluid loss test.

Filtration-induced pressure evolution in permeation grouting

  • Permeation grouting is of great significance for consolidating geo-materials without disturbing the original geo-structure. To dip into the filtration-induced pressure increment that dominates the grout penetration in permeation grouting, nonlinear filtration coefficients embedded in a convection-filtration model were proposed, in which the volume of cement particles in grout and the deposited particles of skeleton were considered. An experiment was designed to determine the filtration coefficients and verify the model. The filtration coefficients deduced from experimental data were used in simulation, and the modelling results matched well with the experimental ones. The pressure drop revealed in experiments and captured in modelling demonstrated that the surge of inflow pressure lagged behind the stoppage of flow channels. In addition, both the consideration of the particles loss in liquid grout and the number of filtrated particles on pore walls presented an ideal trend in filtration rate, in which the filtration rate first rose rapidly and then reached to a steady plateau. Finally, this observed pressure drop was extended to the grouting design which alters the water to cement (W/C) ratio so as to alleviate the filtration effect. This study offers a novel insight into the filtration behaviour and has a practical meaning to extend penetration distance.

여과-투과에 대한 실험적 분석: 여과매체의 종류, 여과매체의 매수, 여과압력의 영향 (Experimental Analysis on Filtration-Permeation: Influence of the Type and Sheets of Filter Media, and Filtration Pressure)

  • 케이크 여과와 고액분리에서 가장 중요한 지표인 케이크 평균 비저항을 결정하는 방법으로 여과실험을 사용하고 있으나 침전 등의 영향으로 정확한 값을 측정하기 어렵다. 이 연구에서는 조금 더 안정된 방법으로 여과 후 형성된 케이크에 입자제거수를 투과시켜 평균 비저항을 측정하는 여과-투과 실험을 제안한다. 탄산칼슘 1 wt% 현탁액을 사용하여 여과-투과 실험을 8종의 여과매체에 대하여 여과매체 1장과 3장, 압력 0.5 기압과 0.2 기압의 조건에서 각 조건 당 3~5회씩 동일한 실험을 수행하였다. 그 결과 여과 후 투과에서도 안정된 투과 속도가 측정됨을 확인하였고, 이를 바탕으로 Ruth의 공식을 분석하여 투과기간의 특징을 구명(究明) 하고 여과기간에 발생하는 침전의 영향을 분석하였다. 그 다음, 여과매체 3종을 선택하여 여과와 투과에서의 케이크 평균 비저항값으로 일원배치법에 의한 분석을 하였다. 분석결과 여과에 의해서는 0.5 기압과 0.2 기압의 케이크 평균 비저항값이 구분되지 않으나, 투과에 의해서는 충분히 구분되었다. 또한 투과기간의 케이크 평균 비저항값들이 여과기간의 그것에 비해 매우 좁은 분포를 가지는 것을 확인했다. 여러 여과매체의 여과 실험결과를 분석하여, 여과매체 저항을 현재의 방법으로 측정하는 것은 큰 의미가 없음을 밝혔고, 유리섬유 여과-투과 실험 결과로 낮은 압력에서 입자의 여과매체 이동 가능성에 대한 분석을 수행했다.

정수장 배출수 처리를 위한 Crossflow 관형막 여과 공정의 운전 적용에 관한 연구 (A Study about Applicability of Treatment for Water Treatment Residual Sludge Using Crossflow Tubular Membrane System)

  • Many other countries have investigated the residual sludge treatment process to save the existing water resource and produce the high suspended solid concentration sludge. There are various methods for concentrating residual sludge, but the membrane system has received the most interest for its efficiency. The objective of this study was to evaluate the application of membrane filtration system for the residual sludge treatment. The experiment equipment was composed of Lab scale Crossflow tubular membrane filtration system. Generally, crossflow operation mode demands high electric cost mainly for the pump energy. So to cut off electric cost, very low Crossflow velocity was used in this experiment. Results confirmed that suspended solid concentration of residual sludge could be concentrated to 57,000mg/L in low Crossflow velocity tubular membrane system,. This concentration can be directly injected into the dehydrator. Based on the results, we know that the Crossflow tubular membrane system should be replaced conventional residual sludge treatment system.

도로노면 유출수 처리를 위한 여과에서의 여재별 손실수두 특성 (A study on the headloss of filter media for treatment of Road Runoff)

  • Stormwater runoff from urban road area as non-point source has a tendency of including lots of pollutants at initial rain period. Recently, there are several cases of having installed treatment facilities for reducing pollution discharge from the impervious cover in urban area to prevent watershed environment from getting worse. The filtration type among non-point source treatment systems has been known as one of the most efficient system for treatment of non-point source pollutants. Therefore, various kinds of filter media such as expanded polypropylene(EPP), granular activated carbon, zeolite, perlite, illite, sand, gravel has been developed. This study was conducted to verify performance and hydraulic characteristics of filter media as measures for non-point source. The experiment was carried out to evaluate applicability and variation of 4 kind of most popular filter media(EPP, GAC, Zeolite, Perlite) in headloss with elapsed time and influent flow rate and to obtain data base that could be used to establish management plan for road runoff treatment. In experiment by tap water, it showed that EPP and perlite those are floatable materials showed stable operating performance and lower headloss than the others.

저탁도 해수원수 특성에 적합한 응집 - 여과 공정의 최적화 (Optimization of Coagulation and Media Filtration Process for Low Turbidity Seawater)

  • 본 연구는 RO 해수담수화 전처리 공정으로써 응집 및 여과공정에 대하여 수행되었다. RO 시스템은 충분하고 안정적인 전처리를 통하여 RO 막오염을 완화 할 수 있는 우수한 수질을 공급할 수 있어야 한다. 본 실험은 RO 막 공정의 전처리로서 다양한 응집제 주입량, 응집 교반 강도 및 시간, 탁도, 여과속도 실험 조건을 사용하여 응집과 여과공정의 효과를 조사하기 위하여 수행되었다. 본 연구 결과 적합한 RO 공급수로 적절한 SDI 값을 나타내기 위한 최적 전처리 조건은 응집 pH 6.5, 탁도 4 NTU 이상 그리고 여재 충진 높이가 550 mm 이상인 것으로 나타났다. 그러나 응집교반 강도, 응집제 주입농도와 여과속도는 여과효율에 비교적 큰 영향을 미치지 않은 것으로 나타났다.

처리수 재이용을 위한 최종침전지 유출수의 급속여과공정 처리특성 (Treatment Characteristics of Rapid filtration Process treating Secondary Clarifier Effluent for Wastewater Reuse)

  • 하수 처리수의 재이용을 위하여 표준활성슬러지법에 의한 생물학적 처리 후 최종침전지 유출수를 급속여과공정으로 처리하기 위한 Pilot Plant 실험연구가 수행되었다. 또한, 활성슬러지와 연계된 급속여과공정과 포기조 후단에 응집제를 주입하는 활성슬러지 이후 급속여과 처리하는 공정과의 비교 실험도 행해졌다. 최종침전지 유출수를 급속여과공정으로 처리한 경우 여과속도는 100m/day, 여과지속시간은 40시간 이하로 운전하는 것이 타당한 것으로 나타났으며, 여과지의 역세척 주기는 여과속도 100m/day일 때 40시간에 1회 정도가 되었다. 여과지 역세척 시 역세척 방법은 공세 1분, 공세+수세 30초, 수세 1분, 공세·수세 2분, 수세 3분, 안정 30초, 배수 10분의 순으로 행하는 것이 효과적이었으며, 수세속도는 10LPM으로 전체 여과수량의 2%정도였다. 표준활성슬러지 시스템에 의한 2차 처리수를 잡용수로 재이용 하기 위해서는 폭기조 후단에 응집제를 첨가하여 여과 공정을 후속공정으로 하는 시스템으로 유용하게 사용할 수 있을 것으로 판단된다.

Pilot Scale Assessment of DOC and THMs Removal in Conventional Water Treatment System

  • This research aims to investigate the behavior of organic matter that causes bacterial re-growth and the formation of disinfectant by-products such as THM in water treatment, and to optimize conditions for a more efficient and conventional water facility. THM removed 51 % and 12 % through coagulation/sedimentation and filtration using a selected conventional system. In this experiment, the removal ratio of DOC was highest at 68 % when the Gt value was 42,000 and lowest at 41 % when the Gt value was 30,000. 77-84 % of total DOC was removed during coagulation/sedimentation, and 15-23 % was removed during filtration. When Gt values were between 30,000 and 66,000, over 50 % of high molecular matter above 10 K during coagulation/sedimentation was removed. Turbidity removed 98 % when the G1 value was 66,000. As the Gt value increased, the turbidity removal ratio increased. Turbidity removed over 20 % during the filtration process.
