Hot-water soluble extracts were prepared from medium-sized barks of Siberian larch (Larix gmelineii). The extracts were fractionated by ultrafiltration method for producing uniform quality of adhesives. Molecular weight distribution of the extracts was ranged of 100 to 300.000. pH of the extracts affected amounts of flux, and the range of pH 6~pH 8 was proper for wood adhesives, because of easy concentration and fast gelation time. Removal of particles greater than $0.45{\mu}m$ from the extracts increased both filtration speed (flux) and yields of solids in the filtrates. In ultrafiltration process. operating pressure, filtrate temperature, and flow rate significantly increased with the increase of individual condition. Ultrafiltration using PM10 membrane was very effective to fractionate and concentrate the extracts. Removal of large particles greater than 0.45 m from the extracts increased filtration speed(flux) and yields of solids in the filtrates. A gelation time was accelerated with the increasing pH of the extracts and its concentration. The Stiasny precipitate(26%) from the filtrate obtained by PM 10 membrane was very lower than that(78%) of the retentates. This ultrafiltration method was efficient for obtaining high yield purified phenolic compounds.
This study was for the evaluation of adaptability of the fiber filter as the pre-treatment of the RO membrane through SDI (Silt Density Index) measurement. The turbidity of raw waters were $0.76{\sim}1.6$ NTU for the effluent of sewer treatment plants (STP) and $2.2{\sim}3.3$ NTU for sea waters and 100 NTU for the surface water. The turbidity of the $2^{nd}$ filtrate of the serially connected two fiber filters was $0.07{\sim}0.25$ NTU and $SDI_{15}$ was $1.4{\sim}2.8$ when the 17% PAC was dosed $10{\sim}30ppm$. Results of the turbidity and $SDI_{15}$ of the $2^{nd}$ filtrate of the fiber filter which were compared with them of the lab scale MF/UF disc filter for the same STP's effluents showed that filtrate quality were enhanced with a little on the order of two stage fiber filter>MF>UF, the difference in $SDI_{15}$ was only $0.7{\sim}1.0$. So, the filtrate of the serially connected two stage fiber filter could satisfy $SDI_{15}$ 5.0 safely which was normally required for the feed water by the RO membrane supplier and it means the serially connected two stage fiber filter could be applied as the pre-treatment process of the RO membrane.
In order to recycle the waste material and to develop the thickening unit of waste activated sludge from wastewater treatment facilities, the filtration bio-reactor equipped with a shadow mask filter module was employed for this work from which the operating properties and parameters were drawn. The sludge thickening and filtration unit is made of cylindrical acryl tank(12cm i.d. ${\times}$ 58cm height: working volume of 6L), where the flat-sheet type of shadow mask filter module(pore size: 220~250um, opening area: 34.8~39.6%) was installed and the effluent was withdrawn from the effluent port at the lowest point of the reactor, and the filtration was performed only by the hydraulic pressure. For evaluating the operating performance of this reactor, some parameters such as the solid-liquid separation of different biomass concentrations, the water quality of filtrate, the aeration cleaning time and the cleaning effect were investigated. Depending on the MLSS concentrations, the different time to withdraw 3L of filtrate was required in which the longer filtration time was necessary for the higher MLSS concentrations caused by the thicker formation of cake layer: 40 minutes for 5,000 mg/L, 70 minutes for 10,000 mg/L and 100 minutes for 15,000 mg/L, where the concentrations of SS were 8.9, 6.7 and 6.5 mg/L, respectively. Under the same operating conditions (the intensity of aeration cleaning: 80 L/min, MLSS: 10,000 mg/L), the proper aeration cleaning time was revealed 30 seconds, and the stable formation of cake layer was in the range of 10 to 15 minutes. Therefore, the shadow mask considered as a waste material can be of use as a filter material for the sludge thickening system.
Ultrafiltration(UF) and powdered activated carbon(PAC) adsorption were combined to treat wastewater contaminated with refractory organic compounds. Secondary sewage effluent of RBC process was used for the investigation. It was determined from batch test results that a contact time of 2 hours and a PAC dose of 450mg/l would be used in the experiments. Backwashing was accomplished by forcing the permeates back ward with pressure of $2.5kgf/m^2$ for 90 seconds. It was shown that refractory organics removal by the PAC-UF process was more efficient than UF process without PAC pretreatments. As backwashing frequency was decreased from four times to one time in an hour, the removal efficiency was significantly increased. The addition of PAC to the UF process mitigated the fluctuation of filtrate quality which was increased in UF process without PAC treatment as transmembrane pressure was increased.

This study was conducted to investigate how the pore sizes of MF and UF membranes affected the removal efficiencies. The experimental results were compared with those obtained from the existing sand filter to select the optimum membrane. Turbidity of the raw water was adjusted to 10, 30, 50, 100, and 200NTU. The removal efficiencies of the turbidity and SS were nearly 100% for all membranes applied. Not membrane differences in the removal efficiencies of dissolved organics were also found. Thus, MF membrane with pore size $0.1{\mu}m$ was selected to obtain satisfactory removal efficiencies of turbidity and bacteria. Permeable flux was also considered. The $0.1{\mu}m$ MF membrane system was operated in the treatment plant to compare the results with those obtained from the existing sand filter. Turbidity, SS, $KMnO_4$ consumption, and number of coliform were chosen to be compared. Because there were not much differencies in the quality of the treated water, the existing coagulation-sedimentation-filtration process might be replaced and upgraded by simpler membrane process.

Mountain Pine Beetle (MPB) attacked pine was evaluated for pulp quality, chemical and physical properties, and bleachability. Chemical analyses showed that the dehydroabietic acid and total acetone extractives content were higher in the year 3 (grey) attacked MPB chips and lower in the year 5 (grey) attacked MPB chips as compared to a typical SPF (spruce/pine/fir) reference. Lignin and carbohydrate content of the MPB wood chips were comparable to the SPF. Similarly, there was little difference in kappa number, pulp yield and liquor consumption between the 3 and 5 year MPB attacked wood. Likewise there was no significant difference in the resulting tear strength, burst, or tensile strength. There appeared to be an improved bleaching response in the MPB attacked pulp as compared to the SPF reference, but this was accompanied by a slightly lower bleached pulp yield and higher bleach filtrate COD and solids content.

This research carried out to evaluate the disadvantage of pre-chlorination and the effect of polyamine as coagulant aids for treating the blooming water with Microcystis sp.. Pre-chlorination on blooming water makes the colony of Microcystis sp. to the smaller size. Coagulation with polyamine advanced treatment efficiency not only turbidity but also particulate matters especially less then $5{\mu}m$ size for the blooming water compared with using alum alone. Particle count was more sensitive than turbidity on water quality management of settlement and filtrate.

A column experiment was performed to investigate the influence of the sludge cake development on the riverbed and the hydraulic gradient imposed by the drawdown at the well on the filtrate quality in order to offer a guideline in the design and operation of the riverbed filtration. Results show that the sludge cake on the riverbed plays an important role in the removal of the organic matter. Under the conditions of this study the COD removal rate increased from 17% to 50% along with the sludge cake development, which was equivalent to the BCOD removal of 22% and 67%, respectively. The active removal of the organic matter took place in the sludge cake and the upper 40 cm of the riverbed. As the flow rate increased owing to the increase in the head difference imposed on the column, the slope of the COD profile near the column inlet decreased, however, the profiles converged in about 40 cm from the inlet. In 10 days of sludge cake formation the dissolved oxygen was depleted at the depth of 70 cm, which suggests the denitrification can take place beyond the depth. This depth was further reduced to $20{\sim}40\; cm$ as the sludge cake developed. From this study the removal of organic matter can be expected through the riverbed filtration even with the depth of as shallow as 3 m, which is frequently met in Korea, while the removal of nitrogen through denitrification is not expected to be active under the condition.
In this study, danmuji samples stored at 5 and $25^{\circ}C$ were examined for three weeks to observe the changes in the color, property of matter, and microorganisms of danmuji, and its sensory properties, during its storage. The difference in the brightness and redness of danmuji and danmuji filtrate as their storage period became longer was not big but was significant, and their yellowness decreased following storage at both 5 and $25^{\circ}C$. The hardness of the danmuji sample stored at $5^{\circ}C$ showed the greatest value at day 7 while that of the danmuji sample stored at $25^{\circ}C$ showed the greatest value at day 14. It was found in the examination of the total cell number of the stored danmuji that the total cell number was $10^5CFU/g$, with almost no change, but in the case of the danmuji filtrate, the cell number increased from the latter part of the storage. The number of yeast fungi increased until storage day 7 for both the danmuji sample stored at $5^{\circ}C$ and that stored at $25^{\circ}C$. The cell number of danmuji did not change since then while the cell number of the danmuji filtrate constantly increased. As for the sensory properties of each stored danmuji, the overall taste preference was highest at storage days 14 and 21 ($5^{\circ}C$), and the overall scent preference was high for the danmuji that had been stored for 7 days ($5^{\circ}C$), but there was no significant difference. The texture and color of and the overall preference for the danmuji stored at $25^{\circ}C$ significantly decreased as the storage period got longer. All in all, the preference for the danmuji stored at $5^{\circ}C$ was higher than that for the danmuji stored at $25^{\circ}C$, although there was no significant difference. Thus, it is thought that $5^{\circ}C$ is more appropriate than $25^{\circ}C$ as the storage temperature of danmuji products.
I performed the research about the drinking water treatment by precoat filtration and activated carbon adsorption process in the D water treatment plant at Gwangju. D water treatment plant inlet water is supplied from Juam lake in Jeollanamdo. The results are as follows; 1. Element disk used in this experiment are R(pore size $10{\mu}m$), B(pore size $20{\mu}m$). And diatomaceous earth are A(cake pore size $3.5{\mu}m$), B(cake pore size $7{\mu}m$) and C(cake pore size $17{\mu}m$) 2. Filtrate of precoat filter during 30 min are B-C 10.2 > BB 5.7 > R-A 5.4 ($m^3/m^2$). 3.
