  • Color enhancement basically deals with color manipulation in digital images. Recently, the technique has become widely used as a result of the increasing use of digital cameras. Retinex-based colorenhancement algorithms are a popular technique. In this paper, retinex with bilateral filtering is proposed to improve the quality of poorly illuminated images. Generally, it consists of three main steps: first, a retinex-based algorithm with color restoration; second, transformation mapping using histogram matching; and finally, smoothing the image using a bilateral filter. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method can successfully enhance image contrast while avoiding the halo effect and maintaining the color distribution in the image.

  • This paper proposes a parameter estimation technique of a power transformer. Based on the combined equation, it estimates separately the primary and secondary leakage inductances using the least square method from the instantaneous voltages and currents in the steady state. The performance of the proposed technique was investigated by varying the cut-off frequency of the filter and the number of samples per cycle. The estimated values are obtained based on the average value for 41 cycle.

  • Active Power Filters(APF) have been developed for several years to solve the harmonics disturbance problems on power system networks. This paper studies observer based digital algorithm and PWM technique for three phase current source APF by simulation. Both switching or outside white noises affect seriously at control signal for APF control system. Hence observer algorithm to reduce noises is used. A technique of generation gating patterns for the CSI topologies based on carrier PWM techniques is applied. The requirements imposed on gating signals are satisified by the appropriate combination of single phase switching patterns and short pulse generator.

  • In this paper, we propose a method for a mobile robot to estimate a specific location of a service provision target using a beacon-tag for the purpose of providing location-based services (LBS) to users in an indoor environment. To estimate the location, the irregular characteristics and error factors of the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) generated from the beacon are analyzed, and the distance conversion function is derived from the RSSI data extracted by applying a Gaussian filter. Then, the distance data converted from the plurality of beacons estimates an indoor location through a triangulation technique. After that, the improvement in the location estimation is analyzed by applying the temporal confidence reasoning technique. The possibility of providing a LBS of a mobile robot was confirmed through a location estimation experiment for a plurality of designated locations in an indoor environment.

  • In this paper, we propose new unsharp masking technique based on the multiscale gradient planes. The unsharp masking technique is implemented as a high-pass filter and improves the sharpness of degraded images. However, the conventional unsharp masking enhances the noise component simultaneously. To reduce the noise influence, we introduce the edge information from the difference of the gradient values between two consecutive scales of the multiscale gradient. The multiscale gradient indicates the presence of image edges as the ratio between the gradients between two different scales by its multiscale nature. The noise reduction of the proposed method does not depend on the variance of images and noises. In experiment, we demonstrate enhancement results for blurred noisy images and compare with the conventional cubic unsharp masking technique.

  • In this paper, we introduce the notion of the smoothly perfect 8-connected (SP8C) contour and propose a coding technique for the SP8C contours. Based on the contour simplification using the majority filter proposed by Gu[6], SP8C contours are extracted on the contour lattice from the segmented image. By noting that, unlike the perfect 8-connected contours, the SP8C contours are restricted to travel in only 3 different directions along the contours, we also propose two techniques for encoding the SP8C contours. The one is the modified version of the neighbouring direction segment coding by Kandeko[2], while the other is to employ the notion of the entropy coding. From the comparison in terms of the entropy, it is shown that the proposed SP8C contours require les bits in encoding the diagonal contours than the 4-connected contours employed by Gu. And computer simulations reveal that the contours can be efficiently encoded by the proposed technique.

  • As we know, roof is composed of heterogeneous rock. When roof fractures, a large amount of energy would be released in the form of seismic wave. How to identify the abnormal signal of seismic wave is a much difficult problem, there are many methods used usually, such as Fourier Transformation, filter technique etc., but abnormal signal can't be recognized accurately. In this paper, multi-resolution wavelet technique is used to identify the first and second variation point, based on the Lipschitz $\alpha$. A living example analysis shows, multi-resolution wavelet technique can identify the abnormal signal of seismic wave effectively in different scale, and the omen of roof fall can be grasped in order to forecast the roof fall accurately. It provides a new idea for the predication of catastrophe on rock mechanics and engineering.
