  • On the purpose of conform the more stringent government regulation for turbid stormwater from construction sites, the feasibility and availability of synthetic fiber placing after the conventional protection barrier were tested in this study. Initially, comparative work on the filtering performance of fiber media and conventional gravel filter was carried out, 27% higher filtration capacity was obtained under the similar operational conditions. The filter efficiency was about 20 to 52% with a varying filter depth of 5 to 15cm, presuming at extreme storm flow conditions (800-1500 m/day of filtration rates). Fiber filter was found to have a similar filtration prosperity as grain media; namely, the separation efficiency is directly and inversely proportional to filter depth and rate, respectively. The effects of filter aid (polyaluminium chloride) on filter performance was also investigated, it greatly affected the turbidity reduction at the dosage of 2 mg/L. At the time of breakthrough, a simple filter washing was carried out, herein, the solid recovery achieved over than 88% and greatly determined by operational parameters. Based on the operational data, the empirical models aimed for predicting filtration efficiency were established, which can effectively determine the required filter depth and filtration area in field.

  • A compressible media filtration process with synthetic fiber media was studied for combined sewer overflows (CSOs) treatment. Since the operation performance of fiber media filtration was dependent on the pattern of CSOs, the flow rate of CSOs was investigated and it was characterized by a big fluctuation. Thus, in this study, the fiber media filtration process was tested with wide range of filtration velocity. The removal efficiency was proportion to the increase in compressibility. As the filtration velocity was increased, the treatment efficiency was decreased and consequently leveled off when the velocity exceeded 750 $m^3/m^2$/d. An exponential equation was introduced to express the relationship between the removal efficiency and up-flow velocity. At columm test, six repetition of filtration and backwash cycle did not after the filtering velocity under the constant pressure condition.

  • The purpose of the present work is to investigate the removal characteristics of positively charged filters for capturing negatively charged particles such as bacteria and virus in water. In order to reduce the pressure drop and increase the filtration efficiency, the filter media, modified by charge modifier having positive functional groups, is developed and evaluated. Improved liquid filters have been developed with the modified surface charge to capture and adsorb particles by electrokinetic interaction between the filter surface and particles contained in an aqueous liquid. The positively charged filter media is composed of glass fiber, cellulose and poly-ethylenimine resin for positively charging with the variation of volume ratio. The zeta potential value of the positively charged filter is +37.92 mV at the glass fiber and cellulose content ratio of 50 : 50 with resin content of 100%, while that of the PSL test particle is -23.5 mV at pH 7. The removal efficiency of the electro-positively charged filter is 98% for PSL particles of 0.11 ${\mu}m$, while that of the negatively charged filter is 7%. The positively charged filter media showed the potential to be an effective method for removing fine particles from the contaminated water for liquid filtration.

  • Natural organic matter (NOM) removal by physico-chemical adsorption and biological oxidation was investigated in five slow sand filters with different media depths. Non-purgeable dissolved organic carbon(NPDOC) and $UV_{254}$ absorbance were measured to evaluate the characteristics of NOM removal at different filter depths. Removal efficiency of NOM was in the range of 10-40% throughout the operation time. At start-up of the filters packed with clean sand media, NOM was probably removed by physico-chemical adsorption on the surface of sand through the overall layer of filter bed. However, when Schumutzdecke layer was built up after 30 days operation, the major portion of NPDOC was removed by biological oxidation and/or bio-sorption in lower depth above 50 mm. NOM removal rate in the upper 50 mm filter bed was $0.82hr^{-1}$. It was about 20 times of the rate($0.04hr^{-1}$) in the deeper filter bed. Small portion of NPDOC could be removed in the deeper filter bed by both bio-sorption and biodegradation. SEM analysis and VSS measurement clearly showed the growth of biofilm in the deeper filter bed below 500 mm, which possibly played an important role in the NOM removal by biological activity besides the physco-chemical adsorption mechanism

  • Filtration using granular media such as quarried sand, anthracite and granular activated carbon is a well-known technique used in both water and wastewater treatment. A relatively new pre-filtration method called pebble matrix filtration (PMF) technology has been proved effective in treating high turbidity water during heavy rain periods that occur in many parts of the world. Sand and pebbles are the principal filter media used in PMF laboratory and pilot field trials conducted in the UK, Papua New Guinea and Serbia. However during first full-scale trials at a water treatment plant in Sri Lanka in 2008, problems were encountered in sourcing the required uniform size and shape of pebbles due to cost, scarcity and Government regulations on pebble dredging. As an alternative to pebbles, hand-made clay pebbles (balls) were fired in a kiln and their performance evaluated for the sustainability of the PMF system. These clay balls within a filter bed are subjected to stresses due to self-weight and overburden, therefore, it is important that clay balls should be able to withstand these stresses in water saturated conditions. In this paper, experimentally determined physical properties including compression failure load (Uniaxial Compressive Strength) and tensile strength at failure (theoretical) of hand-made clay balls are described. Hand-made clay balls fired between the kiln temperatures of $875^{\circ}C$ to $960^{\circ}C$ gave failure loads of between 3.0 kN and 7.1 kN. In another test when clay balls were fired to $1250^{\circ}C$ the failure load was 35.0 kN compared to natural Scottish cobbles with an average failure load of 29.5 kN. The uniaxial compressive strength of clay balls obtained by experiment has been presented in terms of the tensile yield stress of clay balls. Based on the effective stress principle in soil mechanics, a method for the estimation of maximum theoretical load on clay balls used as filter media is proposed and compared with experimental failure loads.

  • The main purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of hybrid collection system combined with centrifugal force of cyclone and filtration of bag filter in one unit system. The experiment and numerical simulation are executed for the analysis of collection efficiency and pressure drop characteristics of hybrid system in comparison with those of a general fabric bag filter with the various experimental parameters such as inlet velocity(filtration velocity), dust concentration and dust type, etc.. In present system, dust particles tangentially coming into the system body are controlled by the centrifugal force effect, and the next collection is made out by the filtration mechanism in the fabric filter media. Therefore, the effective first collection causes the decrease of dust loading on the fabric filter, and it presents quite a lower pressure drop of fabric filter than that of a general fabric filter. At the inlet velocity, $21{\sim}27m/sec$ and inlet concentration(fly ash) $300mg/m^3$, pressure drops through the filter media of hybrid system are shown lower as $10{\sim}22mmH_2O$ comparing to those($17{\sim}33mmH_2O$) of a general fabric bag filter.

  • This study aims to investigate the use of a floating media filter (FMF) to eliminate waterborne microorganism in treated domestic wastewater for reuse in agriculture. A conventional sand filter (SF) was used concurrently to compare treated water quality. The total/fecal coliforms and somatic coliphage were employed as fecal indicators. The result showed that the FMF was fed with 3 times higher infiltration rate ($15m^3/m^2.h$) than that in the SF ($5m^3/m^2.h$), in which both filters gave similar coliform removal at 6 hours operation. The somatic coliphage elimination tended to increase with operational time for the FMF while that of the SF showed decreasing trend. When a 24 hour continuous operation was applied for the FMF, it showed better removal of somatic coliphage (78%), fecal coliforms (60%) and total coliforms (56%) than that of 6 hour operation. In conclusion, the FMF gave better performance than the SF did by producing a good quality of treated water for agriculture in terms of waterborne microorganisms including turbidity and suspended solids.

  • The necessity of the filter coefficients compensation for the LTJ adaptive filter was explained generally and easily by analyzing it with respect to the time-varying transform domain adaptive filter. And also the reduction method of computational complexity for filter coefficients compensation was proposed and its effectiveness was verified through experiments using artificial and real speech signals. The proposed adaptive filter reduces the computational complexity for filter coefficients compensation by 95%, and when the filter is applied to the acoustic echo canceller with 1000 taps, the total complexity is reduced by 82%

  • Antimicrobial powder was made by exchanging silver ion on calcined oyster shell. On the purpose of application to water clarifier, bail-type media mixed with antimicrobial powder and $0{\sim}30%$ white kaoline were made. The sterilization effect, pore size distribution and zeta potential was tested to indicate the condition for the media of water clarifier. From these tests, it was confirmed that this media have an excellent sterilization power on $G^-\;and\;G^+$ germs. As the concentration of the exchanged silver ion increased, the surface charge density of the anions on the surface of the media also increased. The surface pore size decreased with the concentration of silver ion and 20% more white kaoline ratio. Consequently, mixing ratio of white kaoline would appear to indicate the optimun condition as media have sterilization power.
