  • In this study, the Coanda effect inducing bump was applied to improve the film cooling effectiveness on the flat plate with $30^{\circ}$ and $45^{\circ}$ angled rectangular slots. The slot length to width ratio was 6. A cylindrical cap shaped structure, called Coanda bump, was installed at the exit of the slot to generate Coanda effect. The width and height of the bump was 10.5 mm and 1 mm, respectively. The film cooling effectiveness was measured at the fixed blowing ratio, M=2.0, using pressure sensitive paint (PSP) technique. The mainstream velocity was 10 m/s and the turbulence intensity was about 0.5%. Results showed that the film cooling effectiveness for case of $30^{\circ}$ angled slot was higher than that of $45^{\circ}$ angled slot. It was found that there was no positive effect of Coanda effect on the overall averaged film cooling effectiveness for the $30^{\circ}$ angled slot. On the other hand, for the $45^{\circ}$ angled slot, the film cooling effectiveness was improved with the installation of the Coanda bump.

  • Film cooling performance from two rows of holes with opposite orientation angles is evaluated in terms of heat flux ratio. The film cooling hole has a fixed inclination angle of 35°and orientation angle of 45°for the downstream row and -45°for the upstream row. Four film cooling hole arrangements including inline and staggered configurations are investigated. The blowing ratio studied was 1.0. Boundary layer temperature distributions are measured to investigate injectant behaviors and mixing characteristics. Detailed distributions of the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness and the heat transfer coefficient are measured using TLC(Thermochromic Liquid Crystal). For the inline configuration, there forms a downwash flow at the downstream hole exit to make the injectant well attach to the wall, which gives high adiabatic film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficient. The evaluation of heat flux ratio shows that the inline configuration gives better film cooling performance with the help of the downwash flow at the downstream hole exits.

  • In this present work, the effect of hole shapes, orientation and hole arrangements on film cooling effectiveness has been carried out. For this work a flat plate has been considered for the computational model. Computational analysis of film cooling effectiveness using different hole shapes with no streamwise inclination has been carried out. Initially, the model with an inclination of $30^{\circ}$ has been verified with the experimental data. The validation results are well in agreement with the results taken from literature. Five different hole shapes viz. Cylindrical, Elliptic, Triangular, Semi-Cylindrical and Semi-Elliptic have been compared and validated over a wide range of blowing ratios. The blowing ratios ranged from 0.67 to 1.67. Later, orientation of holes have also been varied along with the number of rows and hole arrangements in rows. The performance of film cooling scheme has been given in terms of centerline and laterally averaged adiabatic effectiveness. Semi-elliptic hole utilizes half of the mass flow as in other hole shapes and gives nominal values of effectiveness. The triangular hole geometry shows higher values of effectiveness than other hole geometries. But when compared on the basis of effectiveness and coolant mass consumption, Semi-elliptic hole came out to give best results.

  • Dispersion of coolant jets in a film cooling flow field is the result of a highly complex interaction between the film cooling jets and the mainstream. In order to investigate the effect of blowing ratios on the film cooling of turbine blade, cylindrical body model was used. Mainstream Reynolds number based on the cylinder diameter was $7.1\;\times\;10^4$. The free-stream turbulence intensity kept at $5.0\%$ by using turbulence grid. The effect of coolant flow rates was studied for blowing ratios of 0.9, 1.3 and 1.6, respectively. The temperature distribution of the cylindrical model surface is visualized by infrared thermography (IRT). Results show that the film-cooling performance may be significantly improved by controlling the blowing ratio. As blowing ratio increases, the adiabatic film cooling effectiveness is more broadly distributed and the area protected by coolant increases. The mass flow rate of the coolant through the first-row holes is less than that through the second-row holes due to the pressure variation around the cylinder surface.

  • In this paper, the experimental study was carried to investigate the effect of angle of the anti-vortex holes on the film cooling effectiveness on a flat plate. The pressure sensitive paint technique was applied to measure the film cooling effectiveness. Two anti-vortex hole angles of $0^{\circ}$ and $15^{\circ}$ with respect to the primary hole were considered, and the simple cylindrical hole case was also tested. The blowing ratio based on the cylindrical hole was 0.5 and the same flow rate was kept for all anti-vortex hole cases. Results showed that the film cooling effectiveness for the anti-vortex hole cases were much higher than that of the cylindrical case. Among the anti-vortex hole cases, $15^{\circ}$ angle anti-vortex hole case showed higher film cooling effectiveness than that by the $0^{\circ}$ angle anti-vortex hole case.

  • This experimental study has been conducted to investigate the installation of the vertical flame holder shape in ramjet combustor, which affects on the film cooling effectiveness. All slot position, the film cooling effectiveness decreases because of the shear layer and high turbulence intensity between separated flows and coolant flows. When the flame holder is installed, film cooling effectiveness decreases abruptly on the beginning of the slot exit region due to the mixing effect. As the blowing rate increases, the film cooling effectiveness is increased for all cases due to the augmented momentum of injected coolant from the slot.

  • The objective of the present study is to predict the film cooling effectiveness by a row of holes at various injection ratios and injection angles. Numerical calculations have been performed to investigate the characteristics of flow and temperature distributions in a region near the down-stream of injection hole including the region of adverse pressure gradient. The elliptic turbulent 3-dimensional governing equations with variable thermal properties using the low-Reynolds number k-$\bar{varepsilon}$ model was solved by SIMPLE algorithm. The results showed that the presence of adverse pressure gradient and secondary vortex in the region near the downstream of injection hole induces large temperature gradent. The $45^{\circ}$ injection has higher averaged film cooling effectiveness than $60^{\circ}$ injection. But neverthless the $90^{\circ}$ injection has greater deviation from a flat plate than $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ injection, the $90^{\circ}$ injection has higher averaged film cooling effectiveness than $45^{\circ}$ and $60^{\circ}$ injection in the region near the downstream of injection hole.

  • Various cooling techniques have been applied to the gas turbine blade in order to reduce heat load to the blade. On the blade surface, film cooling method is used and the accurate information of film cooling effectiveness should be evaluated in order to predict the exact temperature distribution in the blade. In this study, pressure sensitive paint (PSP) was used to measure the film cooling effectiveness on a flat plate. Results showed that PSP technique successfully evaluated the distribution of film cooling effectiveness. Three blowing ratios of 0.5, 1, and 2 were tested and the film cooling effectiveness near holes decreased as the blowing ratio increased, however, increased far downstream from the holes.

  • A parametric study on anti-vortex holes for turbine blade cooling was investigated numerically. Three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and shear stress transport turbulence model were used for analysis of anti-vortex film cooling. Validation of numerical results was carried out comparing with experimental data. The cooling performance of anti-vortex holes was assessed by two geometric variables, the ratio of diameters of holes and the lateral distances between the primary hole and anti-vortex hole at blowing ratios of 0.5 and 1.0. The results showed that the spatially-averaged film-cooling effectiveness increases as the ratio of the diameters increases and the distance between the primary hole and anti-vortex hole decreases.

  • Several studies of film cooling were accomplished with a secondary flow channel parallel to the main flow. In real turbine blades, however, the direction of the secondary flow channel is generally normal to the main flow. Thus, this study performs a numerical analysis to investigate the effects of the direction of secondary flow on the effectiveness of double-jet film cooling. The blowing ratio is 1 and 2, and the lateral injection angle is $22.5^{\circ}$. The parallel channel case creates a well-developed anti-kidney vortex with a blowing ratio of 1, and the laterally averaged film cooling effectiveness of the parallel channel is enhanced compared to the normal channel. The normal channel shows higher performance with a blowing ratio of 2. Both cases show high film cooling effectiveness. These phenomena can be attributed to a high blowing ratio and flow rate rather than an anti-kidney vortex.
