  • In this paper we present approximated constrained least squares filter for real-time directionally adaptive image restoration. The proposed method makes a hardware implementation easier for real-time image restoration because of reducing the filter size. Furthermore, for directional adaptive image restoration, this paper estimates the local orientation by analyzing the covariance matrix and applies to approximated constrained least squares filter. Experimental results show that the proposed method is sharper and less artifacts than existing methods.

  • Old archived film shows two major defects: line scratch and blobs. In this paper, we present a design and implementation of an automatic video restoration system for line scratches observed in archived film. We use autoregressive (AR) image model because we can make stochastic and specifically autoregressive image generation process with our PAST-PRESENT model and Sampling Pattern. We designed locality maximizing scanning pattern, which can generate nearly stationary time-like series of pixels, which is a strong requirement for a stochastic series to be autoregressive. The sampled pixel series undergoes filtering and model fitting using Durbin-Levinson algorithm before interpolation process. We designed three-stage film restoration system, which includes (1) film acquisition from VHS tapes, (2) simple line scratch detection and restoration, and (3) manual blob identification and sophisticated inpainting scheme. We implemented film acquisition and simple inpainting scheme on Texas Instruments DSP board TMS320DM642 EVM, and implemented our AR inpainting scheme on PC for sophisticated restoration. We experimented our scheme with two old Korean films: "Viva Freedom" and "Robot Tae-Kwon-V", and the experimental results show that our scheme improves Bertalmio's scheme for subjective quality (MOS), objective quality (PSNR), and especially restoration ratio (RR), which reflects how much similar to the manual inpainting results.

  • This paper describes a method to estimate the noise power using the minimum statistics approach, which was originally proposed for audio processing. The proposed minimum statistics-based method separates a noisy image into multiple frequency bands using the three-level discrete wavelet transform. By assuming that the output of the high-pass filter contains both signal detail and noise, the proposed algorithm extracts the region of pure noise from the high frequency band using an appropriate threshold. The region of pure noise, which is free from the signal detail part and the DC component, is well suited for minimum statistics condition, where the noise power can be extracted easily. The proposed algorithm reduces the computational load significantly through the use of a simple processing architecture without iteration with an estimation accuracy greater than 90% for strong noise at 0 to 40dB SNR of the input image. Furthermore, the well restored image can be obtained using the estimated noise power information in parametric image restoration algorithms, such as the classical parametric Wiener or ForWaRD image restoration filters. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can estimate the noise power accurately, and is particularly suitable for fast, low-cost image restoration or enhancement applications.

  • In recent years, a film restoration has gained increasing attention by many researchers, to support multimedia service of high quality. In general, an old film is degraded by dust, scratch, flick, and so on. Among these, the common factors are scratch and blotch, so that many researchers have been investigated to restore these degradations. However, the methods in literature have one major limitation: A method is working well in dealing with scratches, however it is poorly working in processing the blotches. The goal of this work is to develop a robust technique to restore images degraded by both scratches and blotches. For this, we use MRF-MAP (Markov random field - maximum a posteriori) framework, so that the restoration problem is considered as the minimization problem of the posteriori energy function. As the minimization is one of complex combinatorial problem, we use distributed genetic algorithms (DGAs) that effectively deal with combinatorial problems. To asses the validity of the proposed method, it was tested on natural old films and artificially degraded films, and the results were compared with other methods. Then, the results show that the proposed method is superior to other methods.

  • Digital image find own level core media in multimedia as image restoration technology fields, which remove degradation factor for image enhancement, have been growing. Linear space-invariant image restoration algorithm often introduce ringing artifacts near sharp intensity transition areas. This paper presents a new adaptive post-filtering algorithm for reducing ringing artifact. The proposed method extracts an edge map of the image using wavelet transform Based on the edge information, ringing artifacts are detected, and removed by an adaptive bilateral filter. Experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can efficiently remove ringing artifacts with edge preservation.

  • Film restoration is to detect the location and extent of defected regions from a given movie film, and if present, to reconstruct the lost information of each regions. It has gained increasing attention by many researchers, to support multimedia service of high quality. Among artifacts, scratch is the most frequent degradation. In this paper, an automatic film line scratch removal system is developed that can detect and restore all kind of scratches. For this we use the spatial information of scratches: The scratch in old films has lower or higher brightness than neighboring pixels in its vicinity and usually appears as a vertically long thin line. Our systems consists of scratch detection and scratch restoration. The scratches of various types are detected by neural network based texture classifier and morphology-based shape filter and then the degraded regions are restored using bilinear interpolation. To assess the validity of the Proposed method, it has been tested with all kinds of scratches, and then experimental results show that the proposed approach is robust to various scratches and efficient to apply a real film removal system.

  • Fast Fourier transform(FFT) is powerful, fast computation framework for convolution in many image restoration application. However, an actually observed image acquired with finite aperture of the acquisition device from the infinite background and it lost data outside the cropped region. Because of these the boundary artifacts are produced. This paper reviewed and summarized the up to date the techniques that have been applied to reduce of the boundary artifacts. Moreover, we propose a new block-based fast image restoration using combined extrapolation and edge-tapering without boundary artifacts with reduced computational loads. We apply edgetapering to the inner blocks because they contain outside information of boundary. And outer blocks use half-convolution extrapolation. For this process it is possible that fast image restoration without boundary artifacts.

  • Fingerprinting is a frontier technique that is the most frequently applied for human identification throughout the world. All citizens over 17 year old living in the Republic of Korea must be fingerprinted to obtain a certificate of resident registration. In Korea, for this reason, human identification through fingerprints has been far better developed and used efficiently both in crime scene investigation and in confirmation of an unidentified body. Scientific approaches have been made to accurately extract the metamorphosed fingerprints in various environments. Because most of the studies on fingerprinting have been accomplished with biometric techniques, researches on restoration of human dermal tissue and taking custody data after collecting fingerprints have been comparatively undermined. In this study, a newly innovative method for fingerprint extraction was developed using the polyester film with print powders and the high temperature-moisturizing method. Compared to the conventional fingerprinting method of paper with ink, minutiae numbers of fingerprints were greatly increased in polyester film with print powders after restoration of fingertips by high temperature-moisturization. This newly developed procedure would be an efficient fingerprinting technique which could be utilized in scientific investigation and in personal identification in the future. Furthermore, the new method for restoration and extraction of fingerprints are easy and inexpensive to practice for a number of human identification.

Blotch is the most frequent degradation in old film. This paper presents a blotch detection method using color and shape feature. The proposed method is two major modules: a SROD detector using impulsive feature and NN-based detector using shape feature. To assess the validity of the proposed method, the experiments have been performed on several old films.
