  • In the present study, we aimed to determine the cause of surface film formation in three rice vinegars fermented using the traditional static fermentation method. The pH and total acidity of vinegar were 3.0-3.3 and 3.0-8.7%, respectively, and acetic acid was the predominant organic acid present. Colonies showing a clear halo on GYC medium were isolated from the surface film of all vinegars. Via 16S rDNA sequencing, all of the isolates were identified as Acetobacter pasteurianus. Furthermore, field-emission scanning electron microscopy analysis showed that the bacterial cells had a rough surface, were rod-shaped, and were ${\sim}1{\times}2{\mu}m$ in size. Interestingly, cells of the isolate from one of the vinegars were surrounded with an extremely fine threadlike structure. Thus, our results suggest that formation of the surface film in rice vinegar was attributable not to external contamination, to the production of bacterial cellulose by A. pasteurianus to withstand the high concentrations of acetic acid generated during fermentation. However, because of the formation of a surface film in vinegar is undesirable from an industrial perspective, further studies should focus on devising a modified fermentation process to prevent surface film formation and consequent quality degradation.

  • Formation behavior of PEO (Plasma Electrolytic Oxidation) films on AZ31 Mg alloy was studied in aqueous solutions containing various concentrations of hydroxide ion ($OH^-$) and silicate ion ($SiO_3{^{2-}}$) by voltage-time curves, and corrosion resistance of the PEO film-covered specimen was investigated by immersion test in 0.5 M NaCl solution. From the analyses of the voltage-time curves, it is suggested that two different types of anions are essentially needed for the formation of PEO films on AZ31 Mg alloy: film formation agent and local film breakdown agent. $SiO_3{^{2-}}$ ion acts only as a film formation agent but $OH^-$ ion acts not only as a film formation agent but also film breakdown agent. The PEO films prepared on AZ31 Mg alloy in alkaline silicate solution showed very good corrosion resistance without any pitting or filiform corrosions up to 480 h of immersion in 0.5 M NaCl.

  • The research for variation of coolant film thickness and separating force has been investigated following the examination for friction profile of work roll and roughness change of strip surface in rolling mill producting actual commercial products. The obtained results are as follows ; (1) Coolant film thickness in cold rolling has been increased relative to the circumferential velocity of work roll, and formation of coolant films has decreased with the smaller diameter of work roll. (2) Separating force is related to the formation of coolant film, and large separating force is needed to the formation of coolant film but it is constant after formation of appropriate film. (3) Wear and roughness alleviation of work roll is larger in bottom-roll than in top-roll on cold surface is larger in the direction of width than in roll direction, and changes of roughness and strip surface hardness rarely occurred after 3 passes.

  • In this study, the technology to grow oriented nanotube thin film from dip-coated $TiO_2$ using hydrothermal method has been successfully developed. The effects of preparation parameters, such as reaction temperature, duration and post treatment conditions on the film morphologies and the adherence to the substrate, have been examined. A general formation mechanism of oriented titanate nanotube thin film is proposed in terms of the detailed observation of the products via two dimensional surface FESEM studies and HRTEM images. The overall formation of $TiO_2-based$ nanotube thin film can be summarized with three successive steps: (1) $TiO_2$ dissolving and amorphous $Na_2TiO_3$ deposition process; (2) layered $Na_2Ti_3O_7$ formation via spontaneous crystallization and rapid growth process; (3) formation of nanotube thin film via $Na_2Ti_3O_7$ splitting and multilayer scrolling process of (100) planes around the c axis of $Na_2Ti_3O_7$.

  • It is important to decide the minimum film thickness and viscosity variations of a multigrade lubricant in the contact surface under the high pressure conditions. By carrying out acceleration, deceleration, and various sliding-rolling ratio movement between two contact bodies, it is experimented that film formation variations in the contact surface are captured with multigrade lubricants in order to exactly investigate the variations of film formations. Optical interference images are continuously captured with high resolution CCD camera during the captured period of acceleration, deceleration. The friction forces between the contacting bodies are also measured simultaneously with the film formation.

  • Surface film formation on $Li(Ni_{1/3}Co_{1/3}Mn_{1/3})O_2$ cathodes upon oxidation of electrolyte during electrochemical cycling was investigated. Information on the important factors for film formation on the cathode can facilitate the design of additives that improve the properties of the cathode. Pyrazole is added to the electrolyte because it is readily oxidized to form a surface film on the cathode. The results of differential scanning calorimetry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) showed that the active material played a dominant role in the interfacial film formation with the electrolyte. Carbon black played a negligible role in the surface film formation.

  • A $TiO_2$ film for photocatalyst was prepared by anodic oxidation at 180V in acidic electrolyte and film formation mechanism was studied. The major part of anodic $TiO_2$ film consisted of anatase type structure and surface morphology exhibited a porous cell structure. The thickness growth rate of the oxide film with anodization time revealed two-stage slope corresponds to the surface morphology between anodic films. The growth of pores on cell structure and the growth rate of film with two-stage slope are related to the constant formation rate of the $TiO_2$ layer.

  • In this paper, electrochemical techniques are used to investigate hydrothermal-electrochemically formation of barium titanate (BT) ceramic films. For comparison, the electrochemical behaviors of anodic titanium oxide films formed in alkaline solution were also investigated both at room temperature and in hydrothermal condition at 150.0 ℃. Film structure and morphology were identified by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). Titanium oxide films produced at different potentials exhibit different film morphology. The breakdown of titanium oxide films anodic growth on Ti electrode plays an important roles in the formation of BT films. BT films can grow on anodic oxide/metal substrate interface by short-circuit path, and the dissolution-precipitation processes on the ceramic film/solution interface control the film structure and morphology. Based upon the current experimental results and our previous work, extensively schematic proce-dures are proposed to model the mechanism of ceramic film formation by hydrothermal-electrochemical method.

  • The effect of pre-existing barrier-type film on porous aluminum oxide film formation during anodization was investigated to control the uniform film growth rate. Initial potential fluctuations during anodization indicated that the breakdown of barrier-film is preceded before the porous formation and the induction time for the porous film growth increases with the increases of pre-existing film thickness. The porous film growth mechanism is lot affected by the presence of barrier film on aluminum surface. In parallel, uniform growth of barrier film underneath the porous structure was attained by two-step anodization processes.
