Leakage magnetic flux is occurred in the cracked area of magnetized specimens, and also it changes the magnetic domain area of the magneto-optical film positioned on the specimen. It causes the change of the optical permeability of the magnetic domain on the crack area. So crack images can be obtained easily using this principle. On the other hand, utilizing a laser in this method makes possible to perform a remote sensing by detecting the light intensity contrast between cracked area and normal area. This paper shows the application of non-destructive inspection system taking advantage of magneto-optical method for micro-cracks and presents examples applied to the several types of specimens having fatigue cracks and fabricated cracks using this method. Also the authors prove the possibility of this method as a remote sensing system under the oscillation load considering application to real fields.

In order to form an aluminum-doped zinc oxide (AZO) transparent electrode film on a polyethylene terephthalate (PET) substrate used for a flexible display substrate, the AZO transparent electrode was produced at low temperature without substrate heating. Even though the produced electrode showed characteristic optical transmittance of 90 % (at 550 nm) and sheet resistance within $100{\Omega}/sq$, cracks occurred 10 minutes after loading applied 2 mm radius of curvature, and the sheet resistance increased linearly. An insertion layer of ZrCu was formed between the AZO film and the PET substrate to suppress the generation of cracks on the AZO film. It was verified that the crack was not generated 30 minutes after the loading of 2 mm radius of curvature, and no increase in sheet resistance was recorded. There was also not cracks in the dynamic bending test of 4 mm radius, but surface resistance was slightly increased. As a result, the ZrCu insertion film improved the interfacial adhesion between the substrate and AZO film layer without increasing sheet resistance and decreasing transmittance.
The crack formation and the resistance of ITO film on PET substrate with a thickness of 20 nm were investigated as a function of strain. The onset strain for the increase of resistance increased with increasing strain rate, suggesting the crack initiation is dependent on the strain rate. Electrical resistance increased at the strain of 1.6% at the strain rates below $10^{-4}/sec$ while it increased at ${\sim}2%$ at the strain rates above $10^{-3}/sec$. The critical strain at which the cracks were formed is close to the proportional limit. Upon loading, the initial cracks perpendicular to the tensile axis were observed and propagated the whole sample width with increasing strain. The spacing between horizontal cracks is thought to be determined by the fracture strength and the interfacial strength between ITO and PET. The crack density increased with increasing strain. However, the effect of the strain rate on the crack density was less pronounced in ITO/PET with 20 nm ITO thickness than ITO/PET with 125 nm ITO thickness, the strength of ITO film is thought to increase as the thickness on ITO film decreases. The absence of cracks on ITO film at a strain as close as 1.5% can be attributed to the compressive residual stress of ITO film which was developed during cooling after the coating process. The higher critical strain for the onset of the resistance increase and the crack initiation of ITO/PET with a thinner ITO film (20 nm) can be linked with the higher strength of the thinner ITO film.
This study was to investigate the influence of the substrate hardness on the hardness and adhesion of TiN thin film deposited by R.F. PACVD. Although the substrate hardness changed, chemical composition, stoichiometry and structure of TiN thin film did not change. ISE index was 1.96-1.99 for the substrate and was 1.57-1.79 for TiN thin film. And ISE index of TiN thin film was inverse proportion to the substrate hardness. When the substrate hardness was low, TiN thin film had many cracks around the indentation. But as the substrate hardness increased, TiN thin film had a few cracks and the deformation was limited within indentation. In having measured the adhesion of TiN thin film by SAT, the critical load (Lc) generally increased as the substrate hardness decreased.
In this study, the stress-strain response and the cracking behaviors of ITO film on a PET substrate are investigated. The cracking behaviors of ITO thin films deposited on a thermoplastic semi-crystalline polymer developed for flexible display applications was investigated by means of tensile experiments equipped with an electrical measurement apparatus and an in-situ optical microscope. Electrical resistance increased gradually in the elastic-to-plastic transition region of the stress strain curves and cracks formed. Numerous cracks were found in this region, and the increase of the resistance was linked to the cracking of ITO thin films. Upon loading, the initial cracks perpendicular to the tensile axis were observed at about 1% of the total strain. They propagated to the entire sample width as the strain increased. The spacing between the horizontal cracks is thought to be determined by the fracture strength and the thickness of the ITO film as well as by the interfacial strength between the ITO and PET. The effect of the strain rate on the cracking behavior was also investigated. The crack density increased as the strain increased. The spacing between the horizontal cracks (perpendicular to the stress axis) increased as the strain rate decreased. The increase of the crack density as the strain rate decreased can be attributed to the higher fraction of the plastic strain to the total strain at a given total strain. The higher critical strain for the onset of the increase in the resistance and the crack initiation of the ITO/PET with a thinner ITO film (300 ohms/sq.) suggests a higher strength of the thinner ITO film.
In this paper, it is intended to present more reproducible and quantitative method for adhesion assemssement. In scratch test, micromechanical analysis on the stress state beneath the indenter was carried out considering the additional blister field. The interface adhesion was quantified as work of adhesion through Griffith energy approach on the basis of the analyzed stress state. The work of adhesion for DLC film/WC-Co substrate calculated through the proposed analysis shows the identical value regardless of distinctly different critical loads measured with the change of film thickness and scratching speed. On the other hand, uniaxial loading was imposed on DCL film/Al substrate, developing the transverse film cracks perpendicular to loading direction. Since this film cracking behavior depends on the relative magnitude of adhesion strength to film fracture strength, the quantification of adhesion strength was given a trial through the micromechanical analysis of adhesion-dependence of film cracking patterns. The interface shear strength can be quantified from the measurement of strain $\varepsilon$s and crack spacing $\lambda$ at the cessation of film cracking.
This paper deals with the various sealing conditions in a vacuum and the discharge characteristics. The MgO thin film is prepared by e-beam evaporation method. Sealing process was performed in a vacuum at panel temperature of 430 $^{\circ}C$. We find the cracks on the MgO film surface, which results in higher discharge voltage and lower luminous efficiency. The vacuum in-line sealing technology does not require additional annealing process but induces the MgO cracks because of the high temperature sealing cycle in a vacuum. Therefore we modify the vacuum in-line sealing cycle which the MgO cracks are not found and the good characteristics of plasma displays are found in higher sealing pressure at sealing temperature of 430 $^{\circ}C$.
PLZT thin films were prepared using sol-gel spin coating. The films mainly consisted of perovskite phase when heat treated at 600$^{\circ}C$ and in O2 or air atmosphere for 2 hours after 7 coating cycles. Cracks were formed when smaller than after 9 coating cycles. When ITO interlayer existed between Corning 7059 glass substrate and the film, cracks were not formed after 9 coating cycles, but cracks were formed after 11 coating cycles because of large volume change of the film contracting on the substrate during the heat treatment. In the observation of microstructure, the thin films have perovskite phase of about 2 $\mu\textrm{m}$ grain size and pyrochlore phase of 100∼200${\AA}$ grain size.

Micro-defects induced by design and production failure or working environments are known as the cause of SCC(Stress Corrosion Cracking) in aged structures. Therefore, the evaluation of structural integrity based on micro-cracks is required not only a manufacturing step but also in-service term. So we introduce a new nondestructive inspection method using the magneto-optical film to detect micro-cracks. The method has some advantage such as high testing speed, real time data acquistion and the possibility of remote sensing by using of a magneto-optical film that takes advantage of the change of magnetic domains and domain walls. This paper introduces the concept of the new nondestructive inspection method using the magneto-optical film, also proves the possibility of this method as a remote testing system under oscillating load considering application on real fields by applying the method to four types of specimens.
