Effects of collision angle on heat transfer characteristics of a liquid droplet impinging on a heated wall above the Leidenfrost point temperature were experimentally investigated. The heated wall and droplet temperatures were $506^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$, respectively, and the impact angle varied from $20^{\circ}$ to $90^{\circ}$ while the normal collision velocity was constant at 0.27 m/s. The droplet collision behaviors and the surface temperature distribution were measured using synchronized high-speed video and infrared cameras. The major physical parameters influencing upon droplet-wall collision heat transfer, such as residence time, wall heat flux, effective heat transfer area, heat transfer amount, were analyzed. It was found at the constant normal collision velocity that the residence time, wall heat flux and effective heat transfer area were hardly not changed, resulting in the almost constant heat transfer amount.
The demand on quantitative measurement of the heat flux is motivated in making higher-quality steel product through a water quenching process of plate mill. To improve a spatial degree of heat flux measurement, the multi-point heat flux measurement was carried out by a unique experimental technique that has a combination of the existing single-point heat flux gauge. The corresponding heat flux can be easily determined by Fourier's law in a conventional way. The multi-point heat flux gauge developed in this study can be applicable to measure the surface heat flux, the surface heat transfer coefficient during a water quenching applications of steelmaking process. The results exhibit different heat transfer regimes; such as single-phase forced convection, nucleate boiling, and film boiling, that are occurred in close proximity on the multi-point heat flux gauge quenched by water impinging jet.
This report presents experimental results on the heat transfer coefficients in the boiling region of spray cooling for actual metallurgical process. In this study, the heat flux distribution of a two dimensional dilute spray impinging on hot plate was experimentally investigated. Based on the experimental results, they classified the heat transfer area into the stagnation region and wall-flow region. In the stagnation region, the local heat transfer coefficient relates mainly to the droplet-flow-rate supplied from spray nozzle directly, so the local heat transfer coefficients is good agreement with the predicted values from correlation for spray cooling proposed by former report However, the local heat transfer coefficient in wall-flow region is larger than predicted values, and it is found that the rebounding droplets-flow-rate must be accurately evaluated to predict the local heat transfer coefficient in this region.
Two-phase flow and heat transfer characteristics during the reflood phase of a single heated rod in the KHU reflood experimental facility were examined. Two-phase flow behavior during the reflooding experiment was carefully visualized along with transient temperature measurement at a point inside the heated rod. By numerically solving one-dimensional inverse heat conduction equation using the measured temperature data, time-resolved wall heat flux and temperature histories at the interface of the heated rod and coolant were obtained. Once water coolant was injected into the test section from the bottom to reflood the heated rod of >700℃, vast vapor bubbles and droplets were generated near the reflood front and dispersed flow film boiling consisted of continuous vapor flow and tiny liquid droplets appeared in the upper part. Following the dispersed flow film boiling, inverted annular/slug/churn flow film boiling regimes were sequentially observed and the wall temperature gradually decreased. When so-called minimum film boiling temperature reached, the stable vapor film between the heated rod and coolant was suddenly collapsed, resulting in the quenching transition from film boiling into nucleate boiling. The moving speed of the quench front measured in the present study showed a good agreement with prediction by a correlation in literature. The obtained results revealed that typical two-phase flow and heat transfer behaviors during the reflood phase of overheated fuel rods in light water nuclear reactors are well reproduced in the KHU facility. Thus, the verified reflood experimental facility can be used to explore the effects of other affecting parameters, such as CRUD, on the reflood heat transfer behaviors in practical nuclear reactors.

An anodic electrophoretic deposition (EPD) technique is used to create a uniform TiO2 thin film coating on boiling thin steel plates (1.1 mm by 90 mm). All of the effective parameters except time of the EPD method are kept constant. To investigate the effect of gamma irradiation on the critical heat flux (CHF), the test specimens were irradiated in a gamma cell to different doses ranging from 100 to 300 kGy, and then SEM and BET analysis were performed. For each coated specimen, the contact angle and capillary length were measured. The specimens were then tested in a boiling pool for CHF and boiling heat transfer coefficient. It was observed that irradiation significantly decreases the maximum pore diameter while it increases the porosity, pore surface area and pore volume. These surface modifications due to gamma irradiation increased the CHF of the nano-coated surfaces compared to that of the unirradiated surfaces. The heat transfer coefficient (HTC) of the nano-coated surfaces irradiated at 300 kGy increased from 83 to 160 kW/(㎡ K) at 885 kW/㎡ wall heat flux by 100%. The CHF of the irradiated (300 kGy) and unirradiated surfaces are 2035 kW/㎡ and 1583 kW/㎡, respectively, an increase of nearly 31%.
In-Vessel Retention (IVR) is a key technology to retain the molten core in the reactor vessel during severe accidents of Pressurized-water reactors (PWRs). In order to gain the safety margin of IVR, it is crucial to enhance the critical heat flux (CHF) of the reactor vessel, which is submerged in a water pool. To enhance the CHF, we have designed and additive-manufactured porous grid plates with a 3-D printer for design flexibility. We measured the CHF for the porous grid plate on the boiling heat transfer surface and found that the CHF was enhanced by 50 % more than that of the bare surface. The CHF enhanced more with a narrower grid pitch and a lower grid height. The visual observation study revealed that the vapor film was formed at the bottom of the grid plate.

The present paper proposes a new correlation for the flow boiling heat transfer coefficients in the low flow rate condition (Re(sub)LF$\leq$200) within horizontal rectangular channels with small gaps (heights). The gap between the upper and the lower plates of each channel ranges from 0.4 to 2mm while the channel width being fixed to 20mm. Refrigerant 113 was used as the test fluid. The mass flux ranges from 50 to 200kg/㎡s and the channel walls were uniformly heated with the heat flux range of 3-15kW/㎡. The quality range covers from 0.19 to 0.76 and the flow pattern is considered to be annular. The measured heat transfer coefficients increase with the mass flux and the local quality; however the effect of the heat flux appears to be minor. At the low mass flux condition, which is more likely with the smaller gap size, the heat transfer is primarily controlled by the liquid film thickness. The proposed F factor for the heat transfer coefficient in the range of Re(sub)LF$\leq$200 well represents the experimental data within the deviation of $\pm$20%. The Kandlikars flow boiling correlation covers the higher flow-rate range(Re(sub)LF>200) within the deviation of $\pm$20%.

The aim of this study is to investigate the heat transfer characteristics in the transient cooling process of a high temperature wall. The slow transient cooling experiment was carried out with a copper block of high thermal capacity. The results of these experiments are as follows. 1. Temperature histories measured by the thermocouple, which is 0.99, 2.00, 2.99mm from the heat transfer surface showed monotonous during the cooling process. These variation are the curves of typical temperature histories in film-boiling, transition-boiling, and nucleate-boiling regions. 2. The temperature histories were measured by thermocouple installed in the copper block. The variations of the surface heat fluxes and surface temperature were computed from the numerical solution method TDMA from the measured temperature histories for radial position one dimensional heat transfer inverse problem. The boiling curves were found by the computed temperature histories. 3. The rewetting point which starts to change from film boiling to nucleate boiling is not connected with the mass velocity and it were found that the temperature of rewetting point indicated about $100^{\circ}C$. 4. The heat flux of rewetting point was about $10^5Kcal/m^2h$, at that time, the heat transfer coeficient indicated about $1000Kcal/m^2h^{\circ}C$ irrelevent to mass velocity. 5. The wall superheat decreases as the pressure increases. But I found that rewetting point appeared under higher condition in the wall temperature.

Falling film heat transfer analyses with aqueous lithium bromide solution were peformed to investigate the transfer characteristics of the copper tubes. Finned(knurled) tube and a smooth tube were selected as test specimens. Averaged generation fluxes of water and the heat transfer performances(heat flux, heat transfer coefficient) were obtained. The results of this work were compared with the data reported previously. As the film flow rate of the solution increased, the generation fluxes of water decreased for both tubes. The reason is estimated by the fact that the heat transfer resistance with the film thickness increased as the film flow rate increased. The effect of the enlarged surface area at the knurled tube was supposed to be dominant at a small flow rate. The generation fluxes of water increased with the increasing degree of tube wall superheat. Nucleate boiling is supposed to occur at a wall superheat of 20 K for a smooth tube, and at 10 K for a knurled tube. The heat transfer performance of the falling film was superior to pool boiling at a low wall superheat below 10 K for both tubes tested. The knurled tube geometry showed good performance than the smooth tube, and the increased performance was mainly came from the effect of the increased heating surface area.

This study presents experimental results on the heat transfer coefficients in the film boiling region of spray cooling for actual metallurgical process. In this study, the heat flux distributions of a two dimensional dilute spray impinging on a hot plate were experimentally investigated. A stainless steel block was cooled down from intial temperature of about $800^{\circ}C$ by twin fluid (air-water) flat spray. It was found from the experimental results that the heat transfer area was classified into the stagnation region and wall-flow region. In the stagnation region, the experimental data of local heat transfer coefficient was closely correlated with the local droplet-flow-rate supplied from the spray nozzle directly. Thus, the local heat transfer coefficients are in good agreement with the predicted values from the correlations proposed by our previous study. In wall-flow region, however, remarkable differences are observed between experimental data and predicted values because the number of rebound droplets increase with increasing the distance from the stagnation point.
