  • The application of aluminium alloy is increasing for lightweight and high quality transport vehicle. In this study, therefore, it is intended to apply the high speed hybrid welding method for marine grade aluminium alloy(A5083) used for shipbuilding that consists of 3 kW CW Nd:YAG laser and MIG welding process. For this purpose, the characteristics of process parameters(laser & arc combine angle and focal position of hybrid head to specimen) are investigated for hybrid fillet joint. This study also describes determination of heat distribution using finite element model of the T-joint fillet weld using the in-house solver which has been validated for different type of welding problems.

  • Among various welding parameters, the welding current which is inversely proportional to the tip-to-workpiece distance in GMAW is an essential parameter to monitor the GMAW process of horizontal fillet joints. For the case of weld defect such as overlap in horizontal fillet welding, therefore, the signal processing for process monitoring or automatic seam tracking should be modified by considering the weld pool surface geometry including the corresponding weld defect. In other words, the adequate signal processing algorithm is indispensible to improve the performance of the arc sensor. However, arc sensor algorithm already developed usually focus on weld seam tracing but do not considering the weld qualities. In this paper, various experiments were carried out to investigate the tendencies of the weld defects when weaving motion is added, and the experimental method based on 2$^n$ factorial design was proposed for deriving the mathematical model between the leg length and the various welding conditions. Moreover, a signal processing method based on the artificial neural network(Adaptive Resonance Theory) was proposed far discriminating the current signal of sound weld beads from that of weld beads with overlap. Finally, the algorithm for weld seam tracking combined with the mathematical modeling and the signal processing method was carried out to track the weld line in conjunction with the improvement of the weld qualities. The reliability of the proposed algorithms were evaluated through various experiments, which showed that the proposed algorithms could be effectively used for arc welding automation.

  • Longitudinal deformation is produced by fillet welding during the fabrication of built-up beams and decreases productivity and quality because it needs an extra correcting process. The deformation is caused by welding moment, which is the value multiplied the welding shrinking farce by the distance from the neutral axis. This welding moment can be offset by generating a moment in the same magnitude and in an opposite direction by induction heating. The location and quantity of the induction heating are decided via experiments and simple equations. This study, first, clarifies the creation mechanism of the longitudinal deformation with FEM analysis. Then, we presents the preventive method of this deformation by induction heating basing on the mechanism and verifies its validity through analysis and experiments.

  • In this paper distribution of welding residual stress on the double fillet welded joint which exits and not exits root gap, i.e. full penetration and partial penetration is investigated by two dimensional cunduct and thermal elasto-plastic analysis. And stress distribution on notch-tip of the structure where welding residual stress regarded as initial stress and then external load is added is also investigated.

  • Arc welding process is one of the most important technologies to join metal plates. Robotic welding offers the reduced manufacturing cost sought, but its widespread use demands a means of sensing and correcting for inaccuracies in the part, the fixturing and the robot. A number of problems that need to be addressed in robotic arc welding processes include sensing, joint tracking, and lack of adequate models for process parameter prediction and quality control. Problems with parameter settings and quality control occur frequently in the GMA(Gas Metal Arc) welding process due to the large number of interactive process parameters that must be set and accurately controlled. The objectives of this paper are to realize the mapping characteristics of bead width using a sensitivity analysis and develop the neural network and multiple regression method, and finally select the most accurate model in order to control the weld quality(bead width) for fillet welding. The experimental results show that the proposed neural network estimator can predict bead width with reasonable accuracy, and guarantee the uniform weld quality.

  • For the horizontal fillet welding with one plate in a vertical position, there will be a higher tendency of weld metal falling down rather than for the butt-welding in flat position. Such phenomenon could bring about the overlap or deflection of weld pool, and consequently induce the poor mechanical strength of weldments. Therefore, a precise position control of welding torch in conjunction with the weld qualify plays an important role in welding robot applications. In the present study, an experimental method was proposed for deriving a mathematical model between the leg length and the welding conditions. Finally, an algorithm was proposed for weld seam tracking and improvement of the weld quality. The reliability of the proposed algorithm was evaluated through various experiments, which showed that the proposed algorithm can be very effective for tracking the weld line and simultaneously achieving the sound weld bead.

  • The temperature gradient in weldment changes the transit time and distorts the direction of the ultrasound beam to the higher temperature regions due to the lower sound speed in the hotter regions of the weldment. This paper describes a ray-tracing method for calculating the effects of temperature gradients on ultrasonic propagation in fillet arc weldig. In the method, weldment is conceptually devided into a number of layers and the refraction and sound speed at each layer is calculated using the temperature which calculated from analytical solution. Calculating the time and location of echoes arrived from various interfaces around a molten weld pool determines the optimum location of ultrasonic transducers and the correct position of flaws.

  • It is well known that there exist two typical fatigue crack initiation locations in ship structures: one is the weld toe and the other is the weld root where partial penetration weld is performed. In particular, it is important for fillet weldments to avoid weld root cracking in order to prevent catastrophic failure particularly in ship structures. Therefore detail considerations are required for cruciform joints with partial penetration when there is a possibility of weld root crack initiation. For these reasons, fatigue tests on welded joints were performed in this study. Concept of stress intensity factor(SIF) by means of fracture mechanics is applied for predicting fatigue life of fillet welded joints.
