Nonlinear dynamic deformation characteristics, expressed in terms of normalized shear modulus reduction curve (G/$G_{max}-\log\gamma$, G/$G_{max}$ curve) and damping curve (D-$\log\gamma$), are important input parameters with shear wave velocity profile ($V_s$-profile) in the seismic analysis of (new or existing) fill dam. In this paper, the reasonable and economical methods to evaluate the nonlinear dynamic deformation characteristics for core zone and rockfill zone respectively are presented. For the core zone, 111 G/$G_{max}$ curves and 98 damping curves which meet the requirements of core material were compiled and representative curves and ranges were proposed for the three ranges of confining pressure (0~100 kPa, 100 kPa~200 kPa, more than 200 kPa). The reliability of the proposed curves for the core zone were verified by comparing with the resonant column test results of two kinds of core materials. For the rockfill zone, 135 G/$G_{max}$ curves and 65 damping curves were compiled from the test results of gravelly materials using large scale testing equipments. The representative curves and ranges for G/$G_{max}$ were proposed for the three ranges of confining pressure (0~50 kPa, 50 kPa~100 kPa, more than 100 kPa) and those for damping were proposed independently of confining pressure. The reliability of the proposed curves for the rockfill zone were verified by comparing with the large scale triaxial test results of rockfill materials in the B-dam which is being constructed.
For the purpose of maintenance and prevention of earth fill dams against damage from natural hazards, automatic monitoring through various measuring instruments and resistivity survey has been carried out. Reservoirs and embankments have the structural vulnerability on the agricultural usages since most of them were built more than thirty years ago. The main aim to use monitoring method is to verify the safety and integrity of the dam. Resistivity survey can detect potential weaknesses, such as defective zones, anomalous seepages or internal erosion processes. Permanent resistivity monitoring systems were installed at a reservoir, which daily measurements have been taken every 6 hour. Using monitoring data for one year, anomalous seepage and structural defects were clarified for dam safety. Annual water level fluctuations are around 10 m. During their operation, reservoir dams are subject to a never-ending hydraulic load from the reservoir, which over the years may cause changes in the properties of the inner parts of the dam construction. Detailed analysis of the monitoring results was performed and showed that resistivities at most locations have been very stable over the full monitoring period excluding the effects of water fluctuation and seasons. To investigate the detectability of weak zone using the DC resistivity monitoring, numerical modeling with a simplified model for the drainage at a reservoir dam was also performed. The results showed that the seepage zone near drainage in a reservoir dam could be detected by resistivity response change.

Piping is a phenomenon where seeping water progressively erodes or washes away soil particles, leaving large voids (Pipes led to the development of channels) in the soil. Piping failure caused by heave can be expected to occur on the downstream side of a hydraulic structure such as fill dams when the uplift forces of seepage exceed the downward forces due to the submerged weight of the soil. The way to prevent erosion and piping and to reduce damaging uplift pressures is to use a protective filter or to construct cutoff wall/imperious blanket. Therefore, all the hydraulic structures faced/with soil materials should be taken the safety against piping into consideration.

The object of this experiment is to find out some flow characteristics of water through sand layer, to prevent moving sands in the filters of the fill Dam, infiltration gallery, well and Deversion Weir. This experiment was accomplished with different particle Sizes of Six Samples and different hydraulic gradient. The results obtained are Summarized as follows. 1. The critical hydraulic gradients for laminar flow was found to be between 1 and 2 when the sand used had the effective diameter, D10 of between 0.18cm and 0.45cm. 2. The critical hydraulic gradients for different particle sizes of sands were varied considerably. 3. There was a negative correlation between critical hydraulic gradient and critical Velocity, and between effective particle diameter D10 and critical hydraulic gradient respectively. 4. In spite of relatively small variation of void ratio of sands used, the values of the coefficient of permeability varied considerably. There was a negative correlation between coefficient of permeability and void ratio.

In this study, properties of shear wave velocity of core zone in filldams are analyzed. Shear wave velocity is derived using analysis of surface wave method that can be used nondestructively on the surface of filldams. These values are acquired through the tests for the core zone of six filldams by SASW and HWAW methods. Existing 2 more results are added. Shear wave velocity according to the depth and confining pressure are estimated, respectively. These analytical results are compared with the frequently used empirical method by Sawada and Takahashi.

Simulation is becoming increasingly popular in construction for training, planning and for assessment of projects. There are, however, significant problems inherent in simulating construction which are not common to other simulations. This paper describes the development and use of computer-based game for teaching and learning of some aspects of construction project management. It is concerned with the development of a model used to simulate the construction of a rock- and clay-fill dam. It includes detailed physical modelling of the performance of individual pieces of equipment and their interaction with the ground, the geography of the project and the weather in which the equipment operates. The behaviour of all of the individual pieces of equipment when acting as fleets is also discussed. The paper also describes the modelling issues of non-technical aspects of earthmoving operations. These include environmental impact, safety, quality and risks. The problems of integrating these with the physics-based models of the equipment performance are discussed. The paper also draws on real experience of using the game in classes in three universities in different countries.
Most of the reservoirs in South Korea are fill dam, and overflow and piping phenomena have been detected as the main causes of failure of fill dam. In this study, an operating ◯◯ reservoir located in Gongju-si is modeled in centrifuge model test to study the behavior of reservoir during water level rise and overflow conditions. In order to simulate seepage and overflow in the real reservoir, the model was constructed in 1/50 scale, and deteriorated and reinforced conduits were installed. After modeling the reinforced and deteriorated conditions of the conduits, LVDTs, pore pressure gauges were installed and centrifuge model tests were carried out with water level rise and overflow conditions in order to analyze the reservoir behavior according to the reinforcement methods. The results of centrifuge model test in water level rise condition show that deteriorated conduit has adverse effects in the stability of the reservoir body, and the conduit which is reinforced by the inverse lining method has enhanced stability of the reservoir body. Moreover, installation of water spillway is seen to prevent the scour and erosion of the reservoir body. The study provides a basic data required for the reinforcement of conduit and water spillway in the reservoir.
The embankment material of Andong Dam was the decomposed granite soil, and FEM analysis with settlement and stress characteristics were studied in this thesis. and also the results were as follows: 1. The vertical settlement of dam quite nearly coincides with the calculated one by FEM. A maximum value of the measured and the calculated is 40cm and 42cm, respectively, at the EL. 130m. 2. The measured settlement values of the central parts in elevation are nearly the same as those of the calculated, and the settlement values in order of magnitude are in core, filter, random and rock. 3. Horizontal deformation of max. 21cm in downstream is larger than that of max. 17cm in upstream, which is highly influenced by the water pressure of reservoir water level and the earth pressure of coffer dam in upstream. 4. Reverse arching effect of vertical stress in streamflow section are caused by the difference of stiffness, because stiffness is larger in core zone than in filter zone. 5. Load transfer ratio which is the ratio of principal stress of core zone and filter zone is 1.06, which clearly showes the reverse arching effect in vertical stress.

Concrete-Face Rock-Fill Dams (CFRDs) are rock-fill dams with watertight-concrete slabs on its upstream slope instead of its central earth cores. The design for CFRDs are still largely empirical and typically based on past experiences. This paper presents a description of the concrete face slabs and leakage behaviors of two post-constructed CFRDs based on the data gathered through instrumentation during the initial impoundment. The results show that the strain on the concrete face slab and the horizontal displacements of the vertical slab joints are slightly affected by both the seasonal temperature change and water loading during the initial impoundment. The deformation of perimetric joints are less affected by the temperature change, however it is significantly affected by the water loading during the initial impoundment. The leakage rate is significantly affected by the hydrostatic load and the deformation of the perimetric joints.
