  • The data grid computing provides geographically distributed storage resources to solve computational problems with large-scale data. Unlike cache replacement policies in virtual memory or web-caching replacement, an optimal file replacement policy for data grids is the one of the important problems by the fact that file size is very large. The traditional file replacement policies such as LRU(Least Recently Used), LCB-K(Least Cost Beneficial based on K), EBR(Economic-based cache replacement), LVCT(Least Value-based on Caching Time) have the problem that they have to predict requests or need additional resources to file replacement. To solve theses problems, this paper propose SBR-k(Sized-based replacement-k) that replaces files based on file size. The proposed policy considers file size to reduce the number of files corresponding to a requested file rather than forecasting the uncertain future for replacement. The results of the simulation show that hit ratio was similar when the cache size was small, but the proposed policy was superior to traditional policies when the cache size was large.

  • In this paper, we present efficient cache replacement policies for the software RAID file system. The performance of this policies is compared to two other policies previously proposed for conventional file systems and adapted for the software RAID file system. As in hardware RAID systems, we found small-writes to be the performance bottleneck in software RAID file systems. To tackle this small-write problem, we propose cache replacement policies. Using trace driven simulations we show that the proposed policies improve performance in the aspect of the average response time and the average system busy time.

  • EXT3NS is a special-purpose file system for large scale multimedia streaming servers. It is built on top of streaming acceleration hardware device called Network-Storage card. The EXT3NS file system significantly improves streaming performance by eliminating memory-to-memory copy operations, i.e. sending video/audio from disk directly to network interface with no main memory buffering. In this paper, we design and implement a buffer cache mechanism, called PMEMCACHE, for EXT3NS file system. We also propose a buffer cache replacement method called ONS for the buffer cache mechanism. The ONS algorithm outperforms other existing buffer replacement algorithms in distributed multimedia streaming environment. In EXT3NS with PMEMCACHE, operation is 33MB/sec and random read operation is 2.4MB/sec. Also, the buffer replacement ONS algorithm shows better performance by 600KB/sec than other buffer cache replacement policies. As a result PMEMCACHE and an ONS can greatly improve the performance of multimedia steaming server which should supportmultiple client requests at the same time.

  • Because of explosive growth in demand for web-based multimedia applications, proper proxy caching for large multimedia object (especially video) has become needed. For a video object which is much larger in size and has different access characteristics than the traditional web object such as image and text, caching the whole video file as a single web object is not efficient for the proxy cache. In this paper, we propose a proxy caching strategy with the constant-sized segment for video file and an improved proxy cache replacement policy. Through the event-driven simulation under various conditions, we show that our proposal is more efficient than the variable-sized segment strategy which has been proven to have higher hit ratio than other traditional proxy cache strategies.

  • Previous buffer cache schemes for multimedia storage systems only exploited the sequential references of multimedia files and didn't consider looping references. However, in some video applications like foreign language learning, users mark the scene as loop area and then application automatically playbacks the scene several times. In this paper, we propose a new buffer replacement scheme, called HBM(Hybrid Buffer Management), for multimedia storage systems that have both sequential and looping references. Proposed scheme assumes that application layer informs reference pattern of files to file system. Then HBM applies an appropriate replacement policy to each file. Our simulation experiments show that HBM outperforms previous buffer cache schemes such as DISTANCE and LRU.

  • This paper describes the improvement of web cache server by scoping in replacement algorithm of data which are collected from the clients. We have found that each replacement algorithm is suitable for each type of data in the web pages. Therefore, we introduce the mechanism to select the replacement algorithm depending on the size of data called the Replacement Algorithm Selection Mechanism (RASM). RASM allows the web cache server to have the suitable replacement algorithm for each type of data. As the result, the byte hit ratio of web cache server can be increased and the congestion in the network can be alleviated.

  • Previous buffer cache schemes for continuous media file system only exploited the sequentiality of continuous media accesses and didn't consider looping references. However, in some video applications like foreign language learning, users mark the scene as loop area and then application automatically playbacks the scene several times. In this paper, we propose a novel buffer cache scheme for continuous media file system that sequential and looping references exist together. Proposed scheme increases the cache hit ratio by detecting reference pattern of files and appling an appropriate replacement policy to each file.

  • This paper proposes a new access method which is to considered the high variability in World Wide Web and manage the web cache space. Instead of using a single cache, we divide a cache and store all documents according to their file types. Proposed method was compares with current cache management policies using LFU, LRU and SIZE base algorithm. Using two different workload, we show the improvement hitting ratio and byte hitting ratio through simulating on the file type caching.

  • Web cache, which is functionally another word of proxy server, is located between client and server. Web cache has a limited storage area although it has broad bandwidth between client and proxy server, which are usually connected through LAN. Because of limited storage capacity, existing objects in web cache can be deleted for new objects by some rules called replacement algorithm. Hit rate and byte-hit rate are general metrics to evaluate replacement algorithms. Most of the replacement algorithms do satisfy only one metric, or sometimes none of them. In this paper, we propose two replacement algorithms to achieve both high hit rate and byte-hit rate with great satisfaction. In the first algorithm, the cache is appropriately partitioned according to file types as a basic model. In the second algorithm, the cache is composed of two levels; the upper level cache is managed by the basic algorithm, but the lower level is collectively used for all types of files as a shared area. To show the performance of the proposed algorithms, we evaluate hit rate and byte-hit rate of the proposed replacement algorithms using the trace driven simulation.
