Identification of wave characteristics during current disruption events in the near-Earth geomagnetic tail region (~ 10 RE) is important to understand the substorm onset mechanism. In this paper, linear stability analysis in the ion-cyclotron grequency range, considering temperature anisotropy and cross-field flow is presented. It is found that the ion-cyclotron drift waves propagating in a quasi-perpendicular direction with respect to the ambient magnetic field are characterized by low frequencies ($\omega$ < $0.5{\Omega}ci$), while quasi-parallel waves have frequencies close to the ion-cyclotron frequency ($\omega{\sim}{\Omega}ci$). This finding is consistent with the observation by THEMIS spacecraft of a current disruption event in which a similar high- and low-frequency band structure is also present [A. T. Y. Lui, et al., J. Geophys. Res. 113, A00C06 (2008)]. It is also found that the quasi-perpendicular mode is excited by the ion cross-field flow.
This observation was to investigate the influence of raw organic matter incorporated into soil at various rates on hydraulic conductivity and elution of solute throughout soil column. Generally the organic matter content in a practical agricultural field was approximately 3%. However, the application rate of organic matter in the field tends to rapidly increase in these days. Therefore, we raised the application rate of organic matter up to 10% in this investigation. From the experiment, we found that the hydraulic conductivities rapidly decreased with increasing rate of organic matter as well as rapid decrease in total volume of eluent during the same period. And electrical conductivities in the effluent significantly decreased after 2 pore volume, resulting in approaching to the criteria of saline soli. From this we could assume that the organic matter may influence the crop growth in the beginning. However excessive irrigation in the field may cause saturation of soil leading to reduction of soil. Therefore, there must be a management methods in application of organic matter with respect to soil water control.

Magnetic field dependence of magnetization reversal in Co/Pt multilayers has been quantitatively investigated. Serial samples of Co/Pt multilayers have been prepared by dc-magnetron sputtering under various Ar pressure. Magnetization reversal was monitored by magnetization viscosity measurement and direct domain observation using a magneto-optical microscope system, and the wall-motion speed and the nucleation rate R were determined using a domain reversal model based on time-resolved domain reversal patterns. Both and R were found to be exponentially dependent on the reversing applied field. From the exponential dependencies, the activation volumes of the wall motion and nucleation could be determined based on a thermally activated relaxation model, and the wall-motion activation volume was revealed to be slightly larger than the nucleation activation volume.

A bipolar magnetic field perturbation in the meridional plane was observed when the Polar spacecraft crossed the plasmapause near the midnight, which was identified by a clear jump in density and temperature, from the plasmasheet to the plasmasphere. The bipolar variation shows a negative-then-positive polarity. To examine the bipolar magnetic field perturbation at the plasmapause, we assume one-dimensional model with physical quantities varying along a direction normal to the plasmapause and employ two-fluid approach for the tangential plasmapause. That is, the magnetic fields on both sides are parallel. Considering Ampere's law and pressure balance relation, we have a perturbed magnetic field, which is consistent with the observation at the plasmapause.

In this paper, degradation in field-aged PV modules including degradation of interconnect, discoloration of encapsulant and hot spot have been observed and analyzed. From the results, photovoltaic module installed for 6 years shows around 16% drop of electrical properties due to the interconnect degradation and PV module passed 18 years has been found to drop of around 20% mainly by the encapsulant discoloration. Furthermore the difference between low and high temperature of PV array at hot spot goes up to $30^{\circ}C$ and it leads to interconnect degradation. On the other hands, the temperature difference was observed to be around $15^{\circ}C$ at the encapsulant discoloration spot of PV array.
We present a few significant advances in methods and concepts of magnetic measurements, aimed both at providing novel routes in the characterization of hard and soft magnetic materials and at improving our basic knowledge of the magnetization process. We discuss, in particular, investigation methods and experimental arrangements that have been developed in recent times for: 1) Hysteresis loop determination in extra-hard magnets by means of Pulsed Field Magnetometry; 2) Broadband observation of domain wall dynamics by highspeed stroboscopical Kerr techniques; 3) Entropy measurements in magnetocaloric materials by calorimetry in magnetic field. While pertaining to somewhat independent fields of investigation, all these measuring techniques have in common a solid approach to the underlying physical phenomenology and have a potential for further developments.
We demonstrate parametric resonance in a magneto-optical trap. When we modulate the intensity of the cooling laser at about twice the resonant frequency of the trap, the atoms in the trap are divided into two parts and oscillate with 180 degree phase difference with the finite length due to nonlinearity of the trap potential. These are the effects of general nonlinear dynamics, called the Hopf bifurcation, or limit cycle motion. The amplitude and the phase of the oscillations are measured and compared with the theoretical calculations based on simple Doppler cooling theory. The experimental results are in excellent agreement with the simulation results based on the simple Doppler cooling theory.
In this study, a batch least square estimator that utilizes optical observation data is developed and utilized to determine geostationary orbits (GEO). Through numerical simulations, the effects of error sources, such as clock errors, measurement noise, and the a priori state error, are analyzed. The actual optical tracking data of a GEO satellite, the Communication, Ocean and Meteorological Satellite (COMS), provided by the optical wide-field patrol network (OWL-Net) is used with the developed batch filter for orbit determination. The accuracy of the determined orbit is evaluated by comparison with two-line elements (TLE) and confirmed as proper for the continuous monitoring of GEO objects. Also, the measurement residuals are converged to several arcseconds, corresponding to the OWL-Net performance. Based on these analyses, it is verified that the independent operation of electro-optic space surveillance systems is possible, and the ephemerides of space objects can be obtained.

We introduce Maemi Dual Field Telescope System (MDFTS) which is newly installed at Kyung Hee Astronomical Observatory (KHAO). MDFTS consists of two telescope tubes (40cm and 10cm), whose observing fields are aligned with different field of view, 15' x 11' and 83' x 63' respectively. We present the specification of instruments (telescope, mount, camera, and filter system) and the observation environment of KHAO. We expect that MDFTS can be used for transient survey e.g. Intensive Monitoring Survey of Nearby Galaxies (IMSNG). Based on observations conducted so far, the limiting magnitude of 40cm telescope in B-band is B_lim ~ 16 mag at 5-σ detection with 150 seconds total integration time under dark and clear observing condition. Also the integrated observing software for MDFTS, KAOS40 is now under developing.
Current instrumentation activities and the open user status of Okayama Astrophysical Observatory (OAO) are reviewed. There are two telescopes in operation and one telescope under reforming at OAO. The 188cm telescope is provided for open use for more than 200 nights in a year. The typical over-subscription rate of observation proposals for the 188cm telescope is ${\~}$ 1.5 - 2. The 50cm telescope is dedicated to $\gamma$-ray burst optical follow-up observation and is operated in collaboration with Tokyo Institute of Technology. The 91cm telescope will become a new very wide field near-infrared camera in two years. The high-dispersion echelle spectrograph (HIDES) is the current primary instrument for the open use of the 188cm telescope. Two new instruments, an infrared multi-purpose camera (ISLE) and an optical low-dispersion spectrograph (KOOLS), are now under development. They will be open as common use instruments in 2006.
