  • Carbon nanofibers could be selectively formed at the groove area of the MgO substrate using microwave plasma-enhanced chemical vapor deposition system. Iridium metal was used as a catalyst layer for the formation of the carbon nanofibers. The growth direction of the carbon nanofibers was vertical to the substrate surface. The selectively grown iridium-catalyzed carbon nanofibers show around $1.8V/{\mu}m$ turn-on voltage and $1.0\;mA/cm^2$ field emission current density at $2.65\;V/{\mu}m$ in the field emission measurement.

  • We report on the fabrication and field emission of carbon nanotube field emitters for mass spectrometer. Due to its high aspect ratio and mechanical strength, we use vertically aligned multi-wall carbon nanotubes prepared by thermal chemical vapour deposition as cathodes, Electrons emitted from a CNT are to ionize some sample molecules. We have successfully attained patterned carbon nanotubes grown on two-dimensional 0.7 mm by 0.7 mm Ni square blocks on Si. The emission characteristics show that the field emission initiates at 200 V.

  • The field degradation of carbon nanotube field emitters in diode emission at constant current was demonstrated to be highly dependent upon the presence of residual gases at partial pressures. Upon exposure to a higher pressure of oxygen containing gases, for example, $O_2$ and CO increased the voltage. Those gases give rise to chemical etching to CNTs emitters. On the contrary, $CH_4$ affected the emission properties in the opposite direction as decreasing the voltage which was probably attributed to the introduction of adsorbate tunneling states. The mixed gas may cause a combined effect of both adsorbate tunneling states and CNT etching.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have used as an electron field emitter of the field emission display (FED) due to their characteristics of high-electron emission, rapid response and low power consumption. However, to commercialize the FED with CNT emitter, some fundamental problems regarding life time and emission efficiency have to be solved. In this study, we investigated the metal coated CNT as a field emitter on which metal nanoparticles were coated by chemical modification. Metal nanoparticles, such as Ru, Pd, were synthesized by solution reduction method. The size of the metal nanoparticle has the range of 2 - 5 nm. Surface was modified chemically with the use of ionic surfactant which changed the surface charge of nanoparticles.

  • Measurements of the direct current resistivity, on multiwalled carbon nanotubes(MWNT) for field electron emitter source that had been screen printed in a thick film form were made as a function of temperature T in the range of 1.7K-390K. In this measuring temperature range, the electrical resistivity for the MWNT show that the main contribution to the conductivity comes form carries that hop directly between localized states executing variable range hopping processes. This thick-film form system for large area display showed a high bright light emission as well as very low turn-on field as like an individual MWNT system at room temperature. Furthermore, the electron emission characteristics followed well typical Fowler-Nordheim conduction under the vacuum.

  • Low field electron emission from novel carbon based cold cathodes is reported. The cathodes consisted of a layer of nanoseeded diamond and an over layer of nanocluster carbon films. The nanoseeded diamond was first coated on to thesubstrate. The nanocluster carbon films were then deposited on the nanocrystalline diamond coated substrates using the cathodic arc process at room temperature. The heterostructured microcathodes were observed to exhibit electron emission currents of 1 $\mu$A/cm$^2$ at fields as low as 1.5 to 2V/$\mu$m. The effect of the nanoseeded diamond size and concentration and the properties of different nanocluster carbon films on emission characteristics is presented.

  • Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are coated on green $ZnGa_2O_4:Mn^{2+}$ phosphor for filed emission display. The cathodoluminescent intensity of CNTs-phosphor is improved compared with uncoated phosphors. Also the effects of phosphors-coated CNTs on electrical and degradation characteristics are investigated to reveal the reason of the enhanced emission intensity.

  • We have synthesized thin multi-walled carbon nanotubes (t-MWCNTs) using a catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) method with FeMoMgO catalyst. The number of tube walls were 2 ${\sim}$ 6 with the corresponding diameters of 3 ${\sim}$ 6 nm. We obtained high production yield of over 3000 wt% compared to the weight of the supplied catalyst. These t-MWCNTs revealed the intermediate structural characteristics between single- and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs and MWCNTs). We have also characterized the field emission properties such as turn-on field and emission current, and current degradation from these t-MWCNTs together with SWCNTs and MWCNTs.

  • Field emission display(FED) using carbon nanotubes (CNT) as field emitters is expected to large-area panels with high luminance and low power consumption. In order to perform the uniform luminance with low driving voltage, we introduced a new electrode to apply higher electric potential over the CNT cathode in 2003.[1] In the study, we described the luminance uniformity of the panel and the improvement of emission uniformity by increasing the emission-site density. The luminance uniformity of the several ideal dots which were selected over the display area in the panel was 2.8%. [2] The CNT cathode was irradiated by excimer-laser, which was effective to improve emission uniformity and lower driving voltage. A prototype of CNT-FED character display was performed for middle size message displays. The prototype panel had 48 x 480-dots and the resolution was 1-mm. The panel realized high luminance at low power consumption. It will be important characteristics for legible and ubiquitous displays. [3]
