Dietary Behaviors, Self Perception of Body Image, Hematological Index and Nutrient Intake of Female Athletes in Incheon

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate dietary behaviors, body image, hematological index and nutrient intake of female athletes in Incheon. The subjects were 112 female athletes (field and track: n=32, firing: n=27, fencing: n=29, swimming: n=14, badminton: n=10) from middle and high schools in Incheon. This cross-sectional study was conducted by a self-administered questionnaire. Fasting blood samples were obtained and analyzed for hemoglobin (Hb), hematocrit(Hct), ferritin, serum iron, mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH), mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC), unsaturated iron binding capacity (UBC), total iron binding capacity (TIBC) and transferrin saturation (TS). Nutrient intakes collected from 3 day-recalls were analyzed by the Computer Aided Nutritional Analysis Program. Statistical analysis was conducted using SPSS 10.0 program. The results are summarized as follows: Average age of field and track athletes, firing, fencer and swimmer was 14 years and that of badmintoner was 17 years. Most of female athletes had dietary problems such as unbalanced meals, skipping meals, and preference of processed foods. More than 60% of female athletes skipped breakfast. As for perception of body image, most of female athletes perceived themselves fatter compared to normal body image. Especially, field and track athletes were more significantly experienced weight control compared to the other athletes (p<0.05). As for physical burden during exercise, 56.3% of swimmer and 31.3% of field and track athletes answered “very hard”, which showed a significant difference (p<0.001) More than 80% of female athletes had experienced a vertigo during exercise (p<0.01). Also, more than 50% of female athletes except badmintoner had experienced an irregular menstruation (p<0.05). Average serum iron level (p<0.05) and TS (p<0.05) of field and track athletes were significantly lower compared to the other athletes. Serum ferritin of badmintoner, field and track athletes and fencer was significantly lower compared to firing and swimmer (p<0.05). Nutrient intakes of female athletes except vitamin B6, niacin and phosphorus were lower than the Korean RDA. Especially, calcium and iron intakes of female athletes were under the 50% of the Korean RDA. Therefore, proper nutrition education and supplementation are required for female athletes to encourage desirable food habits as well as to improve their nutritional status and exercise performance.

Using physical activity levels to estimate energy requirements of female athletes

  • [Purpose] The goal of this study was to review data on physical activity level (PAL), a crucial index for determining estimated energy requirement (EER), calculated as total energy expenditure (TEE, assessed with doubly labeled water [DLW]) divided by resting metabolic rate (RMR, PAL = TEE/RMR) in female athletes and to understand the methods of assessing athletes' EERs in the field. [Methods] For the PAL data review among female athletes, we conducted a PubMed search of the available literature related to the DLW method. DLW studies measuring TEE and RMR were included for the present review. [Results] Briefly, the mean PAL was 1.71 for collegiate swimmers with moderate training, which was relatively low, but the mean PAL was 3.0 for elite swimmers during summer training camp. This shows that PAL can largely vary even within the same sport depending on the amount of training, and the differences in PAL were remarkable depending on the sport. Aside from the DLW method, there is currently no research tool related to athletes' EERs that can be used in the field. The nutrient intakes of the female athletes, with the exception of Vitamin B$_{6}$, niacin and phosphorus were lower than the Korean Recommended Daily Allowances (RDA). In particular, the calcium and iron intakes of the female athletes were under 50% of the Korean RDA. Therefore, proper nutritional education and supplementation are required for female athletes to encourage desirable eating habits, as well as to improve their nutritional status and exercise performances.s.

국가대표 여자 필드하키 선수들의 스포츠 손상 역학조사 (Injuries in Female Elite Korean Field Hockey Athletes: an Epidemiological Study)

  • PURPOSE: This study examined the incidence, location, and characteristics of sports injuries according to the position in Korean female national field hockey athletes. METHODS: Eighteen female national field hockey athletes (two goal keepers, five forwards, six midfielders, and five defenders) who trained at the national training center between January 2018 and December 2018 were enrolled. The event, position, and location of injury were recorded per IOC's daily injury reports form. The incidence of sports injuries was examined with the 95% confidence interval (CI), and the difference in the incidence of injury according to the position was presented as the rate ratio (RR). Moreover, differences in the location of sports injury according to the position were examined using χ2 tests. RESULTS: A total of 92 sports injuries occurred among field hockey players, with an incidence of 6.47 cases per 1,000 hours of training (95% CI 4.98-7.96). In addition, 29.12 cases of injuries occurred per 1,000 exposures (95% CI 23.17-35.07), and the incidence of injury was highest among the defenders, followed by forwards, midfielders, and goal keepers. The most common location of sports injury was the lower extremity, followed in order by the trunk, upper extremity, head, and neck, and there were significant differences in the location of the sports injury according to the position (p=.046). In addition, lumbar spine/lower back, thigh, ankle, lower leg, knee, and foot/toe were common sites of sports injury among female field hockey players. CONCLUSION: These results provide a baseline for predicting sports injuries in athletes during games, and would provide useful information for developing performance enhancement and injury prevention programs.

국가대표 남자 필드하키 선수들의 무릎의 시각적 상사 척도와 무릎 기능평가가 무릎의 근력 및 근지구력에 미치는 영향 (Effects of the Visual Analog Scale and Knee Function Index on the Muscle Strength and Muscle Endurance of the Knees of Male National Field-Hockey Athletes)

  • PURPOSE: This study examined the effects of the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) and knee function index on the knee strength and endurance in the national male field-hockey athletes. METHODS: Twenty-four male field-hockey athletes with a painful knee who trained at the national training center in 2019 were enrolled. The VAS and knee function index questionnaire were used to evaluate the degree of pain and functional state of the knee. The muscle strength and endurance of the knee were measured by Biodex (System 4, USA). The Pearson product moment correlation was performed to examine the effects of the VAS and knee function index the of knee on the strength and endurance. In addition, the VAS and knee function index and muscle strength and muscle endurance were examined to determine the relationship using Simple Linear Regression. The statistical significance level was α=.05. RESULTS: An analysis of the correlation between VAS and knee function index and muscle strength and muscle endurance revealed the VAS and knee function index to be statistically significant (r = .700). In addition, the extensor muscle strength, knee VAS (r = -.457), and knee function index (r = -.414) were also statistically significant. A 1-point increase in the VAS and knee function index was associated with an approximately 9.881 and 1.006 extensor muscle strength. CONCLUSION: The VAS and knee function index of field-hockey athletes are related to the strength of the knee extensors. Therefore, field-hockey athletes should develop a program to strengthen the extensor muscle strength of the knee.

Vitamin D in athletes: focus on physical performance and musculoskeletal injuries

  • [Purpose] The aim of this review was to discuss the effects of vitamin D on physical performance and musculoskeletal injuries in athletes and provide information on the field applications of vitamin D. [Methods] A systematic review was conducted to identify studies on vitamin D in athletes that assessed serum vitamin D levels, vitamin D and physical performance, vitamin D and musculoskeletal injuries, and practical guidelines for supplementation of vitamin D. [Results] Several studies reported that a high proportion of athletes had vitamin D insufficiency or deficiency. Low serum levels of vitamin D in athletes were more pronounced in winter than in other seasons, and indoor athletes had lower serum vitamin D levels than outdoor athletes. Low vitamin D levels have been demonstrated to have negative effects on muscle strength, power, and endurance; increase stress fractures and other musculoskeletal injuries; and affect acute muscle injuries and inflammation following high-intensity exercises. Therefore, periodic assessment and monitoring of vitamin D levels are necessary in athletes; the recommended serum level of 25(OH)D is > 32 ng/mL and the preferred level is > 40 ng/mL (-1). In those with low levels of vitamin D, exposure to sunlight and an improved diet or supplements may be helpful. Particularly, 2000-6000 IU of supplemental vitamin D3 can be consumed daily. [Conclusion] Vitamin D is a potential nutritional factor that can significantly affect physical performance and musculoskeletal injuries in athletes. The importance and role of vitamin D in athletes should be emphasized, and the current levels of vitamin D should be assessed. Therefore, it is essential to periodically evaluate and monitor serum vitamin D levels in athletes.

고등학교 육상선수의 성취목표성향과 자기관리의 관계 (Relationships between achievement goal orientation and self-management in high school track & field athletes)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 고등학교 육상선수들의 성취목표성향과 자기관리의 관계가 성별, 세부종목별, 그리고 운동경력에 따라 어떠한 차이가 있는지를 규명하는 것이다. 체육고등학교에 재학 중인 229명의 육상선수들이 설문에 참여하였으며, 설문자료를 분석하여 다음과 같은 결과를 도출하였다. 남학생들의 성취목표성향은 여학생들에 비해 과제목표지향적이었으며(p<0.05), 자기관리의 세부영역 중에서도 대인관리, 정신관리, 그리고 몸 관리에서 여학생들보다 높게 나타났다(p<0.05). 세부종목에 따른 결과를 살펴보면, 도약 선수들이 투척선수들에 비해 정신관리가 높게 나타났으며(p<0.05), 다른 자기관리의 세부영역에서는 통계적 유의성이 없었다. 성취목표성향과 자기관리는 고등학교 육상선수들의 경기력에 영향을 미치는 요인으로 볼 수 있지만 현장에서 적용하기 위해서는 본 연구에서 나타난 결과를 보다 세심한 주의가 필요하다.

투척선수들의 자기관리가 심리적 행복감에 미치는 영향 (Effects of self-management on psychological happiness in throwers)

  • 본 연구는 육상 투척 선수들의 자기관리와 심리적 행복감의 관계를 실증적으로 규명하기 위한 것으로 연구의 대상자는 대한육상경기연맹에 등록된 고등부, 대학, 일반실업 육상투척선수로서 제91회 전국체전 대회에 출전한 고등부, 대학, 일반실업 선수(남:82, 여:102)로서 총 184명을 대상으로 조사하였다. 수집된 자료를 분석하기 위해 변량분석(ANOVA)과 중다회귀분석(multiple regression)을 실시한 결과 다음과 같은 결론을 얻었다. 첫째, 투척선수들의 사회인구학적 특성에 따른 자기관리 및 심리적 행복감에는 차이가 없는 것으로 나타났다. 둘째, 투척종목 선수들의 자기관리와 심리적 행복감에는 유의한 인과관계가 있는 것으로 나타났다. 즉, 자기관리는 심리적 행복감에 유의미한 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 이상의 결과을 종합해 볼 때, 이 연구에서는 육상경기 중 투척경기의 선수들의 사회 인구학적 특성에 따른 자기관리와 심리적 행복감에는 차이가 없고, 자기관리는 심리적 행복감에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 따라서 선수들의 심리적 행복감을 통한 최적의 경기수행을 이끌어 내기 위해 철저한 자기관리를 위한 프로그램을 제공해야 한다는 종합적인 결론을 제시할 수 있다.

Eating Attitudes, Weight Concerns, Dietary Intake, and Menstruation Among Korean Female Elite Athletes

  • To examine the eating attitudes, weight concerns, dietary intake, and menstrual function of Korean female elite athletes, 109 subjects in seven sports disciplines (rhythmic gymnastics, synchronized swimming, badminton, volleyball, Taekwondo, field hockey, and soccer) responded to a questionnaire consisted of three parts; eating attitudes and behavior(Eating Attitude Test-26; EAT26), body weight perception (Body Dissatisfaction Index: BDI) and weight control behavior, and menstrual history and status. They also recorded three-day dietary intake. Body weight (43.6$\pm$4.3 kg) and body mass index (16.7$\pm$1.4 kg/$m^2$) in rhythmic gymnasts were lower than those in other athletes (P<0.05). EAT26 scores were not different among sport events (12.3$\pm$6.5 total), however, eating disturbances (EAT26 score$\geq$20) were highly prevalent in aesthetic athletes ($30\%$) than in others ($5\%$). More than half of the athletes perceived themselves overweight and four fifth of the athletes desired to reduce weight about 4.4 kg. The gymnasts consumed the lowest caloric intake (1028:t371) while the volleyball players did the highest (2995$\pm$342 kcal/d) (P<0.05). The BDI score was not different among sport events. Three fourth of the athletes experienced weight control, and the most frequently used weight reduction method was exercise followed by using robber suits, diet, and sauna. About $40\%$ of the subjects reported irregular menstrual cycles, but menstrual dysfunction ($\leq$6 menses/yr) was only $5\%$. Generally, the Korean female elite athletes desired to reduce weight from their current body weight. No differences in eating attitude and body dissatisfaction were noticed among athletic disciplines. However, eating disturbances were highly prevalent in aesthetic athletes who also reported much less energy intake than the recommend daily energy intake. It appeared that weight reduction methods were not properly practiced in these population. Menstrual dysfunction was minimally reported.

국가대표 필드하키선수들의 허리의 시각적 상사 척도와 오스웨스트리 및 허리 근력의 스포츠 융합분석 (Sports convergence Analysis of muscle power and VAS, ODI of National Male Field Hockey Athletes.)

  • 본 연구는 국가대표 남자 필드하키선수들을 대상으로 허리의 시각적 상사 척도와 오스웨스트리 장애지수 및 허리의 근력 간의 상관관계 알아보고자 하였다. 시각적 상사 척도와 오스웨스트리 장애지수는 자기 기입식 평가로 진행하였으며, 허리의 근력을 DAVID를 이용하여 측정하였다. 자료 분석은 피어슨의 적률상관관계를 사용하였으며, 통계적 유의 수준은 α=.05로 하였다. 연구 결과 남자 필드하키선수들의 허리의 시각적 상사 척도와 오스웨스트리 장애지수는 통계적으로 유의하였다. 그러나 그 외의 시각적 상사 척도와 오스웨스트리 장애지수는 허리의 근력에 어떠한 상관관계도 없었다. 따라서, 필드하키선수들의 허리 재활운동 시 단순한 근력운동이 아닌 새로운 운동프로그램이 개발되어야 할 필요성이 있다. 이러한 연구들은 향후 선수들의 치료 및 운동프로그램 개발에 유용한 기초자료로 제공될 것으로 사료된다.
