The Development of Probabilistic Time and Cost Data: Focus on field conditions and labor productivity

  • Labor productivity is a significant factor associated with controlling time, cost, and quality. Many researchers have developed models to define methods of measuring the relationship between productivity and various parameters such as the size of working area, maximum working hours, and the crew composition. Most of the previous research has focused on estimating productivity; however, this research concentrates on estimating labor productivity and developing time and cost data for repetitive concrete pouring activity. In Korea, "Standard Estimating" only entails the average productivity data of the construction industry, and it is difficult to predict the time and cost spent on any particular project. As a result, errors occur in estimating duration and cost for individual activities or projects. To address these issues, this research sought to collect data, measure productivity, and develop time and cost data using labor productivity based on field conditions from the collected data. A probabilistic approach is also proposed to develop data. A case study is performed to validate this process using actual data collected from construction sites. It is possible that the result will be used as the EVMS baseline of cost management and schedule management.

  • Labor productivity is a significant factor related to control time, cost, and quality. Systematic Literature Review for the Application of Artificial Intelligence to the Management of Construction Claims and Disputes

  • Claims and disputes are major causes of cost and schedule overruns in the construction business. In order to manage claims and disputes effectively, it is necessary to analyze various types of contract documents punctually and accurately. Since volume of such documents is so vast, analyzing them in a timely manner is practically very challenging. Recently developed approaches such as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning algorithms, and natural language processing (NLP) have been applied to various topics in the field of construction contract and claim management. Based on the systematic literature review, this paper analyzed the goals, methodologies, and application results of such approaches. AI methods applied to construction contract management are classified into several categories. This study identified possibilities and limitations of the application of such approaches. This study contributes to providing the directions for how such approaches should be applied to contract management for future studies, which will eventually lead to more effective management of claims and disputes.

국내 인터넷 서점의 건강 분야 분류체계 개선 방안에 관한 연구 (A Study on Improving a Classification for Health Categories of Internet Bookstores in Korea)

  • 본 연구는 인터넷 서점의 건강분야 분류체계의 개선방안으로 이를 위해 국내 외 8곳의 인터넷 서점의 건강분야 분류체계 현황을 비교분석하고, KDC, DDC의 해당 주제 분류항목과 비교 분석하였다. 그리고 인터넷 서점의 건강분야 분류체계의 이용에 대한 이용자 면담을 진행하였다. 그 결과를 바탕으로 설계원칙을 수립하고, 인터넷 서점의 건강분야 분류체계 설계안을 개발한 후, 실무자와 전문가 평가를 받아서 건강이란 대분류 아래 11개의 중분류 항목과 60개의 소분류 항목, 16개의 세분류 항목으로 제시하였다. 본 연구의 결과는 인터넷 서점은 물론 웹상에서 건강 관련 정보를 효율적으로 분류하는 기반이 될 것이다.

A Hierarchical Solution Approach for Occupational Health and Safety Inspectors' Task Assignment Problem

  • Background: Occupational health and safety (OHS) is a significant interest of all governments to prevent workplace hazards. Although appropriate legislation and regulations are essentials for the protection of workers, they are solely not enough. Application of them in practice should be secured by an efficient inspection system. Fundamental components of an inspection system are inspectors and their audit tasks. Maintaining the fair balanced task assignment among inspectors strictly enhances the efficiency of the overall system. Methods: This study proposes a two-phased goal programming approach for OHS inspectors' task assignments and presents a case study. Results: The solution approach gives the balanced assignment of inspectors to the workplaces in different cities of the country in the planning period. The obtained schedule takes into account the distances covered by the work places and the number of the workplaces' employees to be audited and pays attention to the human factors by considering the preferences of the inspectors. The comparisons between the obtained optimal schedule and the implemented one that is produced manually show that the approach not only maintains the technical requirements of the problem, but also provides social and physical balance to the task assignment. Conclusion: Both the approach and the application study are expected to offer fruitful inspirations in the area of safety management and policy and they provide a good guide for social policy and organizational aspects in the field of OHS inspectors' task assignment.

ACTIVITY-BASED STRATEGIC WORK PLANNING AND CREW MANAGEMENT IN CONSTRUCTION: UTILIZATION OF CREWS WITH MULTIPLE SKILL LEVELS

  • Although many research efforts have been conducted to address the effect of crew members' work skills (e.g., technical and planning skills) on work performance (e.g., work duration and quality) in construction projects, the relationship between skill and performance has generated a great deal of controversy in the field of management (Inkpen and Crossan 1995). This controversy can lead to under- or over-estimations of the overall project schedule, and can make it difficult for project managers to implement appropriate managerial policies for enhancing project performance. To address this issue, the following aspects need to be considered: (a) work performances are determined not only by individual-level work skill but also by the group-level work skill affected by work team members, each member's role, and any working behavior pattern; (b) work planning has significant effects on to what extent work skill enhances performance; and (c) different types of activities in construction require different types of work, skill, and team composition. This research, therefore, develops a system dynamics (SD) model to analyze the effects of both individual-and group-level (i.e., multi-level) skill on performances by utilizing the advantages of SD in capturing a feedback process and state changes, especially in human factors (e.g., attitude, ability, and behavior). The model incorporates: (a) a multi-level skill evolution and relevant behavior development mechanism within a work group; (b) the interaction among work planning, a crew's skill-learning, skill manifestation, and performances; and (c) the different work characteristics of each activity. This model can be utilized to implement appropriate work planning (e.g., work scope and work schedule) and crew management policies (e.g., work team composition and decision of each worker's role) with an awareness of crew's skill and work performance. Understanding the different characteristics of each activity can also support project managers in applying strategic work planning and crew management for a corresponding activity, which may enhance each activity's performance, as well as the overall project performance.

인천국제공항건설 사업관리 경험 (Introduction to CM Experience from Incheon International Airport (IIA) Construction Project)

  • 2003년 7월 18일 인칠공항공사는 동북아의 중추공항(Hub-Airport)건설을 목표로 단계적으로 추진되는 인천국제공항 2단계건석사업에 필요한 전문적인 사업관리 기술을 지원 받기 위하여 KIDS 컨소시엄(건원, ITM, 도화, 공간으로 구성된 컨소시엄)과 2단계 건설사업관리 기술지원용역계약을 체결하였다. 2단계 건설사업은 250만 평의 부지조성, 제3활주로, 계류장,원격탑승동, 무인자동열차, 고속수하물처리시설, 화물터미널. 등과 필요한 시설물을 2008년 말까지 완료하는 것으로 계획되어 있으며 CM계약자는 기 구축된 공항공사의 각종 사업관리 Tool을 이용하여 공정관리를 포함한 종합사업관리, 건축/전럭시설의 설계감리. IAT/BHS 등의 설계관리. 품질 및 시운전관리 등의 업무에 국내외 전문인력을 공항공사의 사업관리 조직에 투입하여 공사직원들과 함께 사업목표 달성을 위해 매진하고 있다. 본 고에서는 인천공항공사에서 수행하고 있는 건설사업관리사례를 주요업무 중심으로 소개해 보고자 한다.

공정관리의 실태 및 공기 단축에 대한 인식정도 (The State of Schedule Management and the Recognition of Duration Shortening)

  • 건설공사는 현장을 중심으로 이루어지고 있어 공사계획초기 수립된 공기가 공기지연요인에 의하여 지연 또는 연장이 발생하게 되면 건설사는 클레임 등의 위험부담을 안고 있어 공기단축을 통해 공사 준공일 내에 목적물을 완공한다. 이에 광주광역시 내 공동주택 현장의 기술자들을 대상으로 공정관리 실태 및 공기단축의 필요성, 목적, 방법에 관한 인식을 파악해보았고 그 결과 타 지역에 비하여 공정관리전담부서 편성이 미흡하고 전문 인력이 부족함을 알았고, 공기단축의 필요성은 높게 인식된 반면 공사비 절감과의 관계는 낮게 인식되었다. 단축목적으로는 공기연장에 대비, 각종 클레임에 대처를 높게 인식하였으며 단축방법으로는 작업시간연장 및 작업원 증가를 통해 단축하겠다고 하였다. 이에 본 연구는 기술자들로 하여금 공기단축은 단순히 공기지연을 만회하기 위한 것이 아니라 원가절감을 통한 생산성 향상 및 대외 경쟁력 확보와 밀접한 관련성이 있다고 인식되어지길 기대한다.

  • For the sustainable development of the domestic construction project management field, each CM company should try to diversify in terms of service contract types and scope of work while having internationally competitive technical and service capabilities as follows. First, from the initiation of the service to the completion, the CMr should be able to establish and execute a plan to create specific outcomes. Second, CMr must have the capability to produce weekly or monthly cost, schedule, risk, and scope management reports. In addition, it should be possible to apply the cost plus sliding fee method or to systematically and continuously accumulate and process data generated during the construction process.

IFC활용 BIM기반 공정/원가 통합관리 프레임워크 (A Framework Integrating Cost and Schedule based on BIM using IFC)

  • 건설프로젝트 관리 과정에는 수많은 정보가 존재한다. BIM(Building Information Modelling)은 정보전달의 매개체로써 공정 및 원가 정보를 관리하여 4D(3D+Time), 5D(4D+Cost) 시뮬레이션 등 다양한 이익을 얻을 것으로 예상되었다. 그러나 BIM 활용과정에 따른 정보의 연계 문제, BIM 객체기반 공정/원가 정보의 한계, BIM 소프트웨어 호환성 문제 등으로 인해 BIM을 활용한 공정 및 원가정보의 관리는 적극적으로 활용되지 못하고 있다. 이에 본 연구에서는 위의 문제점들을 개선하고자 IFC(Industry Foundation Classes)활용 BIM기반 공정/원가 통합관리 프레임워크를 제안하였다. 먼저, 정보 입력 문제와 정보 표현의 한계점을 개선하기 위해 공간을 최소단위로 공정 및 원가정보를 통합 관리하는 데이터베이스를 구축하고, 데이터 호환성 문제를 해결하기 위해 국제 표준 데이터 포맷인 IFC를 활용하여 앞서 구축한 데이터베이스의 정보와 BIM 소프트웨어를 연계하여 BIM을 기반으로 한 공정/원가 정보의 통합관리를 시도하였다. 이는 BIM기반 공정/원가 통합관리를 위한 정보 처리 프로세스의 기초를 제공하며, 정보 요구에 대한 정확한 이해를 도와 의사소통의 정확성을 향상시켜 BIM기반 공정/원가관리의 효율성을 높일 것으로 예상된다.
