  • This paper presents experimental and numerical investigation on heat generation of a bulk HTS for application to a 100 kWh Superconductor Flywheel Energy Storage System(SFES) bearing. An experimental device is manufactured to reproduce varying magnetic field conditions that a bulk HTS may experience during the operation of the 100 kWh SFES. The bulk HTS is directly cooled by a cryocooler while the heat is generated by the eddy currents created by varying magnetic fields induced by a coil. In order to design the cryocooling system for the 100 kWh SFES project, a preliminary experiment to investigate the actual cooling load variation under AC magnetic field has been carried out. In the experiment, two different copper holders were designed and tested. Several temperature sensors were installed on each component of the assembly and the temperatures were measured for several operating conditions of the 100 kWh SFES. The experimental investigation on the thermal response of the bulk HTS and its holder is considered to be a valuable step fur the successful materialization of a large-scale SFES.

  • The evaluation of pressure fields acting on slender structures under wind loads is currently performed in experimental aerodynamic tests. For wind-sensitive structures, in fact, the knowledge of global and local wind actions is crucial for design purpose. This paper considers a particular slender structure under wind excitation, representative of most common high-rise buildings, whose experimental wind field on in-scale model was measured in the CRIACIV boundary-layer wind tunnel (University of Florence) for several angles of attack of the wind. It is shown that an efficient reduced model to represent structural response can be obtained by coupling the classical structural modal projection with the so called blowing modes projection, obtained by decomposing the covariance or power spectral density (PSD) wind tensors. In particular, the elaboration of experimental data shows that the first few blowing modes can effectively represent the wind-field when eigenvectors of the PSD tensor are used, while a significantly larger number of blowing modes is required when the covariance wind tensor is used to decompose the wind field.

  • The influence of magnetic saturation on electromagnetic field distribution in both a permanent-magnet direct-current (PMDC) motor and a field-winding (wound-field) direct-current (FWDC) motor, with the same output mechanical power, has been studied. In this paper, an approximate analytical method and time-stepping Finite Element Method (FEM) are used for prediction of Back-EMF and electromagnetic torque. No-load and rotor-lucked conditions, according to experimental measurements, and the FEM and analytical method studies of the motors have been considered. A sensitivity analysis has also been successfully accomplished on the major design parameters that affect motor performance. At last, these two DC motors are compared, in spite of their differences, on the basis of measured output characteristics.

  • The subject of this paper is the analysis of a Wire-TEM cell(W-TEM cell) which has an inner wire array rather than a metallic septum;its basic structure is similiar to a NBS TEM cell. To verify improved performances of this W-TEM cell as a standard EM field generator, well-known quasi-static approximations are employed and their resultant ingegral equations are numerically analyzed by moment method. Although the electric field strength of a W-TEM cell is 1.4 dB lower than tht of a NBS TEM cell, the uniformity of EM field patterns in a W-TEM cell is improved. It is also shown that the EM field distortions resulting from loading by the conditing objects under test(loading effects), are decreased considerably. This paper also deals with the investigations about relationship between the EM field distributions and the number of wire composing the inner conductor. Finally, the experimental analysis is performed on the practical model which is built on the basis of the design variables brought out by the theoretical andnumerical analysis.

  • According as optical storage becomes high-density, numerical aperture increases. Therefore, the shift characteristic of moving parts in an actuator for optical pickup becomes a critical design factor because of decrease in the tilt margin. The tilt angle is maximized when the position of moving parts is in a diagonal direction within a moving range. This is determined by design of structure and magnetic circuit of an actuator. Previous analysis method only predicts linear characteristics of moving parts. However, the result of shift characteristics of the moving parts considering structural and magnetic circuit's nonlinearity following the every position simultaneously shows us more realistic result. Therefore, we present analysis method considering nonlinearity of moving parts' position through FEM package using coupled-field analysis. Then, we will suggest hereafter a design guide by comparing the above results with experimental ones.

  • This paper treated the design and performance test of high speed motor/generator used in the flywheel energy storage system. The unique characteristics of the motor in this paper is the it doesn't contain any magnetic material. The field system was constructed by using Halbach array that generates the magnetic field with the permanent magnet only. The armature was also composed of plastic bobbin and winding. This paper shows the design results have a good agreement with the experimental results.

  • Recently, one of the most vital advancement in the field of finance is high-performance trading using field-programmable gate array (FPGA). The objective of this paper is to design high-performance Black Scholes option trading system on an FPGA. We implemented an efficient Black Scholes Call Option System IP on an FPGA. The IP may perform 180 million transactions per second after initial latency of 208 clock cycles. The implementation requires the 64-bit IEEE double-precision floatingpoint adder, multiplier, exponent, logarithm, division, and square root IPs. Our experimental results show that the design is highly efficient in terms of frequency and resource utilization, with the maximum frequency of 179 MHz on Altera Stratix V.

  • ER clutch is a device using ER fluid, so called "intelligent material" and is a power transmission system controlled with electric field strength. In this paper(Part III), the behavior of ER clutch under proper conditions was investigated experimentally and compared to theoretical analyses developed from Part I, II. Considering the optimum design concept proposed from Part I, the concentric cylinder type of ER clutch was designed and the experimental apparatus for the performance test was constructed. The comparisons made indicated that the power transmission model of ER clutch and the temperature rise model of ER fluid developed from Part I, II were acceptable for engineering design calculations.culations.

  • Magnetic abrasive polishing is one of the nontraditional machining technologies newly developed. But it was very difficult to cut non-magnetic materials using MAP process because the process was fundamentally possible by help of a magnetic farce. In this study, we aimed to verify analytically formation of the magnetic field in a case of the nonmagnetic materials especially focused on an aluminum alloy. And also an improving strategy of the magnetic force for the non-magnetic materials was proposed and experimentally verified. Design of experimental method was adopt for assessment of parameters' effect on the MAP results of the aluminum alloy.

  • MAGLEV is the vehicle which can run in levitated condition by the electro-magnets, and the vehicle can run without any contact condition. In MAGLEV system achieving a high magnetic field for minimum weight is a noteworthy goal. Unfortunately the two aspects of this goal high field and low weight are contradictory. Suitable designs must be sought using optimization techniques. In this paper, magnet attraction force is calculated and conformed by experimental data for designing a electro-magnet.
