Due to the rapid development of construction technology with effective land utilization in this nation, many tunnels were and are being built across the country. However, the smoke and the heat generated from tunnel fire are the most important critical factors which may results in both massive personal injury and property damage, especially, due to the closed surrounding of the tunnel. Considering this particular nature of the tunnels, this study aims to install a fire detection system using an optic fiber cable to measure the temperature changes, compare, and analyze the resulted values with the times of temperature changes of the sensor by performing fire simulations under the same condition as a real fire test. From the results, it has been found that the temperature sensor detects a fire occurrence and generates an alarm within one minute after ignition for both a real fire test and a fire simulation alike, and also that the characteristics of temperature changes of the sensor has close relations with the speeds of the currents inside the tunnel. In addition, considering the tunnel fires can affect the evacuation efficiency and the fire extinguishing activities of the fire brigade inside the tunnel, the temperature sensor must be able to search and find the locations and directions of the fires correctly.

The existing fruit sorter has the method of tilting tray and extracting fruits by the action of solenoid or springs. In peaches, the most sort processing is supported by man because the sorter make fatal damage to peaches. In order to sustain commodity and quality of peach non-destructive, non-contact and real time based sorter was needed. This study was performed to develop peach sorter using near-infrared spectroscopy in real time and nondestructively. The prototype was developed to decrease internal and external damage of peach caused by the sorter, which had a way of extracting tray with it. To decrease positioning error of measuring sugar contents in peaches, fiber optic with two direction diverged was developed and attached to the prototype. The program for sorting and operating the prototype was developed using visual basic 6.0 language to measure several quality index such as chlorophyll, some defect, sugar contents. The all sorting result was saved to return farmers for being index of good quality production. Using the prototype, program and MLR(multiple linear regression) model, it was possible to estimate sugar content of peaches with the determination coefficient of 0.71 and SEC of 0.42bx using 16 wavelengths. The developed MLR model had determination coefficient of 0.69, and SEP of 0.49bx, it was better result than single point measurement of 1999's. The peach sweetness grading system based on NIR reflectance method, which consists of photodiode-array sensor, quartz-halogen lamp and fiber optic diverged two bundles for transmitting the light and detecting the reflected light, was developed and evaluated. It was possible to predict the soluble solid contents of peaches in real time and nondestructively using the system which had the accuracy of 91 percentage and the capacity of 7,200 peaches per an hour for grading 2 classes by sugar contents. Draining is one of important factors for production peaches having good qualities. The reason why one farm's product belows others could be estimated for bad draining, over-much nitrogen fertilizer, soil characteristics, etc. After this, the report saved by the peach grading system will have to be good materials to farmers for production high quality peaches. They could share the result or compare with others and diagnose their cultural practice.

Generally, estimations on the displacement as an important factor in evaluating the safety of large structures could be a barometer assessing whether the condition of the structure is deteriorating. Practically, it is not easy how to measure the displacement response to large structures like suspension bridges. In this study, as a method for estimation displacement response from strain signals, mode decomposition technique is proposed. Total displacement response is estimated by superposing quasistatic displacement response and modal displacement responses in dominant modes with larger contributions after estimating the modal displacement responses. If foiled strain gauges are used to measure strain signals, there would likely to generate electric noise, what's more, the more measuring points there are the more economic burden it could be. In order to solve such problems, fiber optic bragg-grating(FBG) sensors were used, which have multi-point measurements with no effect on electric noises. Therefore, the experiment was performed through dynamic load test of suspension bridge and plate-girder bridge to review the possibility for using mode decomposition technique.

The newly developed equipments for the early detection of carious lesion are LFD (laser fluorescence device), Ultrasonic diagnostic system, CLSM(confocal laser scanning microscopy), QLF(quantitative light-induced fluorescence) and DIFOTI (digital imaging fiber-optic trans-illumination) system. In this study, DIFOTI system and LFD were used for the detection of early enamel caries. Twenty five primary teeth extracted from twenty one children at around the dentitional exchanging period were selected as samples. The results obtained from DIFOTI imaging and LFD measurement were compared with those of CLSM and comprehensive evaluations were made for the diagnostic capacity of each device. In vitro test, 40 sample teeth with their buccal & lingual surface formed by a window of $2{\times}3mm$ in diameter were immersed in artificial demineralizing solution for the period of 4, 8, 12 and 16 days. The results obtained from the experimental groups (DIFOTI, LFD) were compared to control group (CLSM) and we have reached to the following conclusions. 1. The sensitivity and specificity of DIFOTI system operated in oral environment was 88.2% and 76.9% respectively. 2. The sensitivity and specificity of LFD measured in oral environment was 76.5% and 69.2% respectively. 3, Regression analysis on the light transparent rate of DIFOTI showed its decrease according to the length of primary enamel decalcification performed in vitro(r=-0.96, p<0.05). 4. No statistically significant difference between LFT measurement and the length of in vitro decalcification was found in regression analysis (p>0.05). 5. The correlation coefficient of DIFOTI image transparent rate and the lesion depth of CLMS was -0.6988 (p<0.05), whereas no statistically significant difference was found for LFD measurement.
Nuclear containment building is used as second blockage to protect us from a radiation leakage caused by the natural disaster or any accidents, so it's safety is important and must be kept with continuous surveillance. In this study, we measured the strain of a nuclear containment building's wall by using FBG sensor and investigated the structural safety of a nuclear containment building. 50 FBG strain sensors and 18 FBG strain sensors were attached on the side wall and upper dome of a nuclear containment building, respectively. We measured the strains of the outside concrete wall during the Structural Integrity Test (SIT) of a nuclear containment building. The strain of an upper dome was larger than that of a side wall, about $200{\mu}{\varepsilon}$. And the very small strain was measured at vertical direction of a side wall. These experimental results were used to evaluate the structural health of nuclear containment building.
We present an all-fiberized power-scalable, sub-nanosecond mode-locked laser based on a frequency-shifted-feedback ring cavity comprised of an erbium-doped fiber, a downshifting acousto-optic modulator (AOM), and a bandpass filter (BPF). With the aid of the frequency-shifted feedback mechanism provided by the AOM and the narrow filter bandwidth of 0.45 nm, we generate self-starting, mode-locked optical pulses with a spectral bandwidth of ~0.098 nm and a pulsewidth of 432 to 536 ps. In particular, the output power is readily scalable with pump power while keeping the temporal shape and spectral bandwidth. This is obtained via the consolidation of bound pulse modes circulating at the fundamental repetition rate of the cavity. In fact, the consolidated pulses form a single-entity envelope of asymmetric Gaussian shape where no discrete internal pulses are perceived. This result highlights that the inclusion of the narrow BPF into the cavity is crucial to achieving the consolidated pulses.

Vessels receive stress during their navigations as well as during their cargo operations. This stress may cause damages to the hull and may result in accidents. So the hull stress monitoring system(HSMS) is recommended in order to prevent these accidents. In this paper, we manufactured fiber Bragg grating(FBG) sensor and the model ship for towing tank experiments. The strain characteristics of the model ship on the water wave were measured through the towing tank experiment. The FBG sensors and electric strain gauges were attached on the connection jig, and then the characteristics of the FBG sensor were compared with those of the electric strain gauge. The strain of model ship was increased according to the increment of the amplitude of water wave. In particular, the largest strain was measured in the center of the model ship. As the wave period increased, the strain of model ship was decreased.
We demonstrate a ring type wavelength swept laser incorporating a fiber Fabry-Perot tunable filter in a laser cavity using 1300 nm semiconductor optical amplifier as a gain medium. The output characteristics of the wavelength swept laser according to the applied scanning frequencies are analyzed in the temporal and spectral domain. The output of the wavelength swept laser decreases dramatically as the scanning frequency increases. And there is a significant peak power imbalance between the forward scan and the backward scan as the scanning frequency increases. Its use in practical applications might be limited.
In this paper, the output and temperature characteristics for an optical signal of the fiber bragg grating have been considered. Also, output characteristics which depend on the temperature changes have been investigated for an all-optic add/drop multiplexer based on the fiber bragg grating and Mach-Zehnder interferometer. From the obtained results, they show that the center wavelength of output spectrum shifts approximately 0.01230 nm/$^{\circ}C$ within a temperature range $-30^{\circ}C{\sim}90^{\circ}C$.
