Experimental and numerical analysis of composite beams strengthened by CFRP laminates in hogging moment region

  • An experimental and a non linear finite element investigation on the behavior of steel-concrete composite beams stiffened in hogging moment region with Carbon Fiber Reinforced Plastics (CFRP) sheets is presented in this paper. A total of five specimens were tested under two-point loads. Three of the composite beams included concrete slab while the other two beams had composite slabs. The stiffening was achieved by attaching CFRP sheets to the concrete surface at the position of negative bending moment. The suggested CFRP sheets arrangement enhanced the overall beam behavior and increased the composite beam capacity. Valuable parametric study was conducted using a three dimensional finite element model using ANSYS program. Both geometrical and material nonlinearity were included. The studied parameters included CFRP sheet arrangement, concrete strength and degree of shear connection.

COMPRESSIVE STRENGH OF FRP-CONFINED CONCRETE COLUMNS UNDER THE ECCENTRIC LOADS

  • In recent years, due to some excellent properties of fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) composites, the use of FRP sheets for strengthening the weak concrete columns have become increasingly popular. Axial loading is the basic assumption in most of the models that are presented for estimating the compression strength of confined concrete columns. However a large number of weak concrete columns in the bending frames are under the combination of both axial and flexural loads. This paper presents the results of an experimental study on the effects of eccentricity of load on the compressive strength of concrete columns confined by FRP sheets. This research shows that the eccentricity of compression load affects decreasingly the performance of confining FRP jacket in confined columns.

온도상승에 따른 탄소섬유시트 보강 콘크리트보의 계면응력 (The Interfacial Stresses in Concrete Beam Strengthened with Carbon Fiber Sheets due to Temperature Rising)

  • 본 논문은 탄소섬유시트로 하면을 보강한 콘크리트 보에서 온도가 상승함에 따라 서로 다른 선팽창계수를 가지는 콘크리트와 탄소섬유시트 사이에 계면전단응력이 발생함으로 부착강도 평가 시 이를 고려하여야 함을 기술하고 있다. 선형탄성거동을 가정한 계면전단응력의 이론식과 모형 보의 온도변화실험을 통하여 변형률을 측정한 결과를 비교함으로써 이론해의 적용성을 확인하였으며, 이론식으로부터 $30^{\circ}C$의 온도변화가 발생하는 경우 탄소섬유시트 부착계면에서 최대 0.91MPa의 전단응력이 발생되는 것으로 조사되었고 변화량이 $10^{\circ}C$인 경우에서도 에폭시에 의한 부착강도의 10~15%의 응력이 추가적으로 발생하는 것으로 나타났다. 그러므로 탄소섬유시트로 콘크리트 구조물을 보수, 보강하는 경우 부착강도 평가 시 온도의 영향이 고려되어야 하며, 온도변화에 따른 장기간의 거동을 평가하는 노력이 필요한 것으로 판단된다.

  • Excellent environmental durability and handy installation procedure as well as high specific strength and stiffness have introduced fiber-reinforced polymeric composite materials into the civil and architectural engineering field. This study presents the considerably enhanced strength characteristics of the mortal beams by being reinforced with epoxy-bonded carbon fiber sheets(CFS). Three point bending and Charpy impact tests were performed on both of bare and reinforced mortar specimens. The influences of length, and the number of reinforcing plies were investigated. Strength reduction due to pre-existent notch was lessened dramatically. The acoustic emission(AE) measurement revealed the progressive damage process in reinforced specimens.

  • Shear strengthening method by steel plates and fiber reinforced polymer lamination has recently been favorably selected due to its efficiencies of duration and performance. Shear failure being brittle and difficult to predict, reinforced concrete structures must have sufficient capacity to absorb the energy for shear failure and to support temporarily the overload which may result due to the loss of shear capacity to the structure. These respects being considered, this research has carried out with the purpose of the experimental verification of the shear strengthening effect and ductility evaluation.

  • Disposable nonwovens entered the medical field over four decades ago, beginning with basic paperlike face masks and proceeding through sterilization wrap, specialty drapes and gowns. These medical nonwovens have proven to be invaluable in products ranging from drape sheets to surgical gowns to adult pads and underpads by utilizing a gamut of nonwoven structures.   • The strengthening method with CFS(Carbon Fiber Sheet) to reinforced concrete structures has a fatal defect. Strengthened beams have been almost failed far below their ultimate strength due to interface debonding failure between the surface of concrete and CFS. The purpose of this study is to investigate the failure mechanism and failure behavior of strengthened RC beam using CFS.

  • An experimental study was carried out to investigate the flexural behavior of RC beams strengthened with high-performance carbon fiber bars. Specimens designed with the conventional retrofitting method were also tested to compare load-carrying capacity and ductility. As the results, specimens strengthened with high-performance carbon fiber bars showed much higher load-carrying capacity and ductility compared to specimens strengthened with a steel plate and carbon fiber sheets. The failure mechanism of the specimen strengthened with a high-performance carbon fiber bar was bond-slip, whereas that of the others were interface debonding or rip-off.

  • Repair and retrofit system of concrete structures has been developed from conventional reinforced concrete overlaying, steel plate bonding and recently to fiber composite systems. Research and study on carbon, aramid, and glass fiber composite system has been actively carried out from all over the world Glass fiber composite is proved to be competitive technically and enconomically, among fiber composite system. CAF system is a system developed locally using all domestic materal, glass fabric and epoxy, and improved in shear bonding property by utilizing silica fume mixed with epoxy. All the tests on material properties, structural behavior, constructiveness at site and quality control procedure proved to be most appropriate system so far developed. Futher research work is and will be under progress for utilization of this system which will be applied to more adverse situation.

  • The objective of this experimental study is to evaluate the strengthening effects of concrete compression confined with Epoxy-boned compound fiber sheets. An analytical model is proposed to construct a stress-strain relationship for confined concrete. Test results are summarized as followed. While non-FRP lateral confinement specimens appeared sudden failure after shell concrete was torn off, specimens confined laterally with FRP were showed that their failure. Specially, Glass fiber lateral confined specimens occurred obviously increase ductility ability. Hence, concrete specimen with lateral confinement by Hi-carborn and Aramide. Glass fiber simultaneously can be increased in not only strength but also a lot of ductility ability.
