  • Paper consists of fiber network and paper properties were highly affected by fiber characteristics. Many researchers have tried to relate fiber and paper properties. Softwood and hardwood fiber's are quite different in their properties. Generally, softwood fiber's are longer and more flexible than hardwood fibers. At present, many paper mills make mixed paper with softwood and hardwood fibers except for special grade. During fracture some fiber's are broken and others are pulled out. In this paper, the number of broken and pulled out fiber's during fracture is analyzed depending on the mixing ratio of softwood and hardwood fiber's. Fiber length, curl, kink, coarseness, WRV and formation index were measured. Double-edged strength samples were prepared to observe the number of broken and pulled out fiber's. Mixed paper strength was decreased with increasing hardwood fibers ratio. During fracture, softwood fiber's were more likely broken and hardwood fibers were more likely pulled out. The strength of paper which consists of softwood fibers was determined by fiber's broken strength and that of hardwood fibers by fiber's debonding strength. Paper strength was changed depending on the fiber's bonding capability. If the fiber is longer and more flexible, the fiber network becomes stronger and stiffer.

  • As a fundamental study to develop the retaining wall of new type, short-fibers are mixed with soils and a series of compaction tests and triaxial compression tests for short-fiber reinforced soils are performed. From the results of compaction tests, optimum moisture content is increased and maximum dry unit weight is decreased with fiber mixing ratio. When 60mm fibrillated fiber of 0.2$\%$ mixing ratio is added to SM soil, strength increment of short-fiber reinforced soil is above 1.2 times compared to soil only. Strength increment shows maximum value for composite reinforced soil, namely, soil+short-fiber+planar reinforcement. But in case of mixing with ML soil and short-fiber, the strength of short-fiber reinforced soil is nearly the same as soil only. Internal angle of short-fiber reinforced soil is increased about $2\~3$ degrees and cohesion is also increased above 10kPa compared to soil only. Therefore, it is judged that short-fiber is a good material to strengthen the soil.

  • A series of consolidated undrained triaxial tests for compacted short fiber reinforced clay were performed to increase the field applications, e.g. retaining wall, waste landfill, soft ground etc. of soil admixtures mixed with short fiber. Kaolin clay and three types of fiber were selected. To acquire reliable length of fibers, an auto cutter was used and a helical mixer was also used to avoid floating of fibers during mixing soil and fibers. It is found that reinforcing effect by aspect ratio and mixing ratio of short fiber decreases as confining pressure is increased. Reinforcing effect has a maximum value at the aspect ratio of 120 and the fiber content of 0.6%∼1.2% and low confining pressure like 50kPa.

  • Concrete is strong on the compressive property, but weak on the tensile and flexural properties. To improve these problems, the reinforcing bar is used in concrete. But porous concrete with steel fiber has a weak point when exposed to air, because porous concrete has the vast continuous void on its inside and steel fiber is easily rusted by air. For these reasons, this study investigated the void ratio, compressive strength, bending strength and bending toughness as steel fiber mixing ratio and target void ratio. From test results, actual void ratio and strength properties increased as the mixing ratio of steel fiber increase. In case the mixing ratio of steel fiber over the fixed ratio, strength is decreased. And from the toughness evaluation, compared to the porous concrete which isn't mixed with steel fiber, the deflection variation efficiency is remarkably improved. Consequently we can confirm the possibility of porous concrete with steel fiber for the secondary product and pavement material to improve strength and bending resistance efficiency.

  • A laboratory investigation was conducted to characterize the flexural fatigue behavior of high performance fiber reinforced cement mortar. Five specimens for statics flexural test and fourteen specimens for the flexural fatigue test were made based on the fiber mixing ratio. Static flexural tests were firstly performed to obtain magnitudes of static failure loads and stress levels before flexural fatigue tests. The flexural fatigue behaviors were investigated based on the stress level and fiber mixing ratio. Also, the equations for the interrelation of the flexural fatigue stress levels with the number at loading cycle were proposed.

  • This study is analyzed mechanical properties and durability of permeability porous concrete to mix polymer and steel fiber for the enhance of performance and durability of porous concrete. It proves that void ratio and permeability are tallied with internal and external standard of paving porous concrete. A property of strength is increased according as the mixing rate of polymer and steel fiber increase, but it showed the tendency to be reduced on the contrary when mixed upwards of 20% of polymer mixing rate and 0.9vol.% of steel fiber mixing rate. As a result, it is possible to make an enhanced which increased 16% of compressive strength and 30% of flexural strength steel fiber reinforced polymer porous concrete at the mixing rate of 10vol.% of polymer and 0.6% of steel fiber.

  • The purpose of this study was to analyze how the fiber properties and mixing ratio of softwood and hardwood pulp affect on roundness of printed image. Softwood pulp and hardwood pulp were refined to 400 and 600ml CSF by Valley beater and handsheets of 70 g/$m^2$ basis weight were made at different mixing ratios of hardwood and softwood pulp. The roundness, dot area, and shape of the printed dot were measured by Image Analyzer. The depths and shapes of the acridine orange penetration into paper were measured by CLSM. With higher mixing ratio of hardwood pulp, the paper showed higher air-permeability and better formation, especially at lower freeness. The roundness of the printed image became better and the dot size became smaller when the amount of hardwood pulp increased. Penetration depth of acridine orange by CLSM became greater and roundness increased to real circle when the amount of hardwood pulp increased. It was thought that higher mixing ratio of hardwood fibers resulted in efficient penetration by better formation with uniform micro-pore distribution and it increased roundness. It was thought that fiber properties and mixing ratio affected the structure of paper and the shape of the printed dot. This study showed that the measurement of depth of the liquid penetration into paper without destruction and contact was feasible. Moreover, this method showed that the shape of the liquid penetration was measurable.

  • This study is to investigate the fundamental and fireproof qualities of high strength concrete corresponding to changes in the curing factors and the PP fiber ratio. The results were as follows. For the fundamental characteristics of concrete, the fluidity was reduced in proportion to the increase in the PP fiber ratio. The compressive strength was somewhat reduced according to an increase in the PP fiber ratio. However, it had the high strength scope of more than 60 MPa at 7 days and of more than 90 MPa at 28 days. On the spalling mechanism followed by changes of the water content ratio, spalling was prevented in all combinations, except the specimen without PP fiber and subjected to 3.0% of moisture contents. When spalling was prevented at that time, the residual compressive strength ratio was 22%~41% and the mass reduction ratio was 5%~7%, which was relatively favorable. As the spalling mechanism corresponds to changes in the curing method, spalling was prevented in concrete with a PP fiber mixing ratio of more than 0.05% in the event of standard curing, and in concrete with a PP fiber mixing ratio of more than 0.10% in the case of steam curing and autoclave curing. In these cases, when spalling was prevented, the residual compressive strength ratio was 23~42% and the mass reduction ratio was 7~11%. In these results, the ease of spalling prevention in high strength concrete was inversely proportional to the water content ratio. Depending on the curing method, spalling was prevented in concrete with over 0.05% PP fiber with standard curing and in concrete with over 0.1% PP fiber with steam curing and autoclave curing.
