  • Hwaseonji(Korean traditional paper) used for writing and painting has been made from the mulberry bast-fiber and the short-length fiber pulps, wood pulps. However, besides wood pulps, other short-length fiber pulps also can be used instead of wood pulps. Hence, this research was carried out to make the various Hwaseonjis with the different properties, using the five kinds of short-length fiber pulps respectively. The short-length fiber pulps used in this research were softwood bleached kraft pulp(SwBKP) hardwood bleached kraft pulp(HwBKP), rice-straw bleached sulfite pulp(RsBSP), bamboo bleached kraft pulp(BbBKP) and recycled pulp from vellem paper(RP). And, the mixture ratios of the mulberry bast-fiber pulp and short-length fiber pulps were 100:0, 80:20, 60:40, 40:60 and 20:80. After various Hwaseonjis were made from different mixtures mentioned above with hand-made method, physical properties and chinese ink blot property of each paper were measured. The strengthes were the highest in the Hwaseonji made from the mixture of the mulberry bast-fiber pulp and SwBKP. However, chinese ink blot property and smoothness were better when RsBSP, BbBKP or RP were mixed into the mulberry bast-fiber pulp. As a result, the various kinds of Hwaseonjis which the users can choose based on their needs were made.

  • The effects of enzymatic treatment of recycled fiber were investigated to obtain the basic informations which can be used to improve the papermaking properties of recycled fiber. The recycled fibers were prepared by the repeated handsheet making and disintegrating of hardwood of hardwood and softwood kraft pulp. Novozym 342, Dinimax and Pulpzyme HC were used for enzymatic treatment. The change of fiber length distribution, freeness, contact angle and crystallinity of pulp were measured. The brightness, opacity, breaking and tear index of paper were also measured. The enzymatic treatment decreased long fiber fraction of recycled hardwood fiber, but increased long fiber fraction of recycled softwood fiber. Freeness was decreased with 0.1% enzyme and then increased again with the increase of th enzyme dosage. The improvement of flexibility of recycled fiber was obtained through the decrease of contact angle that is resulted from the decrease of crystallinity of fiber. Brightness and opacity were affected by the type of pulp and enzyme, and dosage of enzyme. Breaking length of recycled hardwood fiber was improved with enzyme treatment, but breaking length of recycled softwood fiber was decreased except for 0.01% Pulpzyme treatment. Tear index was decreased with enzymatic treatment and the lowest decrease was observed with the treatment to Pulpzyme.

  • Sensing performances of evanescent field absorption (EFA) hetero-core fiber sensor has been presented based on EFA by changing the length and the core diameter of the single mode fiber. Experimental results have demonstrated a good feature in their relationship between the length and the core diameter of the single mode fiber. The sensor consists of 2 fiber optics which have the same cladding diameter of $125{\mu}m$ However one fiber optic used is single mode and has varying core diameter ranging from 3.3 to $5.6{\mu}m$. The other fiber is multimode type and has a thicker fixed core diameter of $62.5{\mu}m$. The 2 fiber optics are thermally spliced together. Experiments conducted to measure the resonance wavelength were carried out over a range of refractive index, to find the optimum sensing length Experiments show that core diameter of the single mode fiber and sensing length offects the linearity and sensitivity.

  • This study has been performed to investigate the effects of glass fiber characteristics on the mechanical properties of thermoplastic composite. The surface of glass fiber was coated with the silan e to enhance the bonding strength between fiber and matrix. A micro-droplet pull-off test was performed to investigate the influence of the silane concentration on the bonding strength. The maximum bonding strength was observed around 10.8% silane concentration. In order to examine the influence of the fiber length and fiber content on the properties of the composite, the composite materials involving tile fiber lengths of 5mm, 10mm, 15mm 20mm, and 25mm were tested. The composites used contain 20%, 30%, and 40% by weight of glass fibers. Tension and flexural tests were performed to investigate their mechanical properties of the composites. The tensile strength and tensile modulus of the composite increase with increasing the glass fiber content. The tensile modulus increases slightly with increasing the fiber length. The maximum tensile strength is observed around the fiber length of 15-20mm. The flexural modulus and strength also increase slightly with increasing the fiber length.

  • This study was carried on paper mulberry bast fibers, which were cut in the length of it's chip by three kinds. And they cooked by sodium hydroxide (NaOH) and ammonium oxalate (AMOX), and pulping process was studied to inquire some properties of hand made papers. The results were as follows. AMOX pulps had $10\~17\%$ higher than NaOH, but amounts of the residual lignin of it's pulps and residual ash were high, and it surely can't be superior. In the freeness of pulps, AMOX pulps were higher than that of NaOH, but they showed tendency to opposite in view of relation of chip's length kinds. For the AMOX pulps, the physical characteristics test results were higher long fiber pulps than short fiber pulps. Specially, in folding endurance long fiber pulps were a very strong. NaOH pulp's physical characteristics test had shown results that were opposite of there of the AMOX pulps, if the length of the fiber is longer, the strengthts generally decreased. To get the optimum fiber's length according to use of paper and pulping method, they must be fractionate chip's length. The long fibers in NaOH pulps affected the paper quality greatly to length of chips.

  • Statistical and probabilistic behaviors of fibers forming fiber webs of all kinds are of great significance in the determination of the uniformity and physical properties of the webs commonly found in many industrial products such as filters, membranes and non-woven fabrics. However, in studying the spatial geometry of the webs the observations must be theoretically as well as experimentally confined within a specified unit area. This paper provides a general theory and framework for computer simulation for quantifying the fiber segments bounded by the unit area in consideration of the "edge effects" resulting from the truncated length segments within the boundary. The probability density function and the first and second moments of the length segments found within the counting region were derived by properly defining the seeding region and counting region.

  • Fluff (lint, fiber fly) generation, especially related to yarn structure, was investigated. Research centered on the fiber length related to fluff generation during the knitting process. Short fiber length composing yarn structure was a main source of the fluff shedding. High quality spun yarn with longer length of fiber was recommended to the high speed knitting industry in order to reduce process troubles such as yarn breakage, etc. but the cost is doubtable to the manufacturers. A trial to reduce the fluff trouble by using chemicals to hold the short fiber on the surface of the yam was suggested and the research showed a positive effect to the problem. However, another factors including a by-product of chemical residue and searching more feasible material need to be concerned for the future research.

  • In order to investigate the applicability of lyocell fiber to filter paper, papper sheets were manufactured with the addition of lyocell fibers in various length(1.5 denier: 2, 3, 4mm) and content(10, 30, 50%) and their physical characters, such as fibrilation rate, adsorption efficiency of methylene blue(MB), paper formation, and crimping ability, etc, were tested. The level of main fibrilation from lyocell fiber was higher in wet beating process than that in free beating because of the higher strength of lyocell fiber compared with wood fiber. Fibrilation could be observed at the degree of beating over 30$^{\circ}$ SR in wet beating with Valley beater. The air permeability and tear factor of the paper increased and the paper formation index decreased according to the increase of fiber length. The weak binding force of lyocell fiber in spite of its higher fiber strength, might be a limitng factor in addition of lyocell fiber to the natural wood pulp in manufacturing the paper having the needed physical properties. High contents of wood pulp decreased air permeability, the breaking length, tear factor, the bursting strength, and paper formation index in paper sheets. As the contents of lyocell increased from 10% to 100%, the adsorption efficiency of MB was elevated to 1.7-7.9 times compared with that in 100% wood pulp. But the length of lyocell fiber did not affect the MB adsorption.
