This experiment was conducted to determine the effect of wrap color on the quality of round baled grass silage at experimental field of Grassland and Forages Division, National Livestock Research Institute, RDA, Suwon from 1997 to 1998. The experiment was consist of randomized block design with three replications. The treatments were three wrap color(white, black and light green). Wrap color did not affect chemical composition. Fiber components(ADF and NDF) of all silages after 2 months were higher than those of forages at ensiling. Among tested wrap colors, white color wrap resulted in lower pH than others (p<0.05) but, there was no significant difference between black and light green color. Dry matter content of light green color was the highest among warp colors, but there was no signifiant difference (p<0.05). Acetic and butyric acid contents of all plots. were not found significant difference among wrap color and wrap color did not influence lactic acid and organic acid concentration. The effect of wrap color on the quality grade and DM loss also were not found significant difference. Results of this study indicate that wrap color does not influence the quality of silage.
The weight ratio of the seed in jujube averaged to 19.1%. The chemical components of dried pitted-jujube were moisture 20.4%, protein 5.3%, fat 1.3%, ash 2.7%, fiber 4.4% and nitrogen-free extract 65.9%. Alcohol insoluble solid content of dried pitted-jujube was 17.4%, in which ammonium oxalate-soluble pectin was 3.7%, water-soluble pectin 3.0%, hydrochloric acid-soluble pectin 1.0%, and sodium hydroxide-soluble pectin 1.0%. Jujube contained sucrose, glucose and fructose as free sugar. The sugars of dried pitted-jujube was composed of sucrose 48.1%, fructose 18.7%, and glucose 11.3%. Drying experiments of pitted-jujube and unpitted-jujube were carried out. Moisture content and brix of dried pitted-jujube were reached at that of dried unpitted-jujube(11%, 78 brix in 48 hours of dry) in 11 hours of drying. And this means that dried pitted-jujube dried 4 times faster than dried unpitted-jujube. The extracts of dried pitted-jujube and dried unpitted-jujube were examinet according to the amount of water added and the extraction time. The brix of dried pitted-jujube extract for 30 min is similar to that of dried unpitted-jujube extract for 150 min. The brix of the extracts did not increase after 150 min extraction. As to the color of extract, 'L' value was higher in dried unpitted-be, while 'a' and 'b' values were higher in dried pitted-jujube.
Giant cell interstitial pneumonia. a synonym for hard metal pneumoconiosis, is a unique form of pulmonary fibrosis resulting from an exposure to hard metal dust. A case of biopsy-proved giant cell interstitial pneumonia in the absence of appropriate history of exposure to hard metal dust is reported. The patient presented with clinical features of chronic interstitial lung disease or idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. He worked in a chemical laboratory at a fertilizer plant, where he had been exposed to various chemicals such as benzene and toluene. He denied having any other hobby in his house or job at work, which may have exposed him hard metal dust. High-resolution CT scan revealed multi-lobar distribution of ground glass opacity with peripheral and basal lung predominance. The retrieved fluid of bronchoalveolar lavage contained asbestos fiber and showed neutrotphil predominance. Surgical lung biopsy was performed for a definite diagnosis. Lung specimen showed alveolar infiltration of numerous multinucleated giant cells with mild interstitial fibrosis. Upon detailed examination of the lung tissue, one asbestos body was found. An analysis for mineral contents in lung tissue was performed. Compared with the control specimen, the amount of cobalt and several hard metal components in the lung tissue of this patient was ten times higher. We speculated that the inconsistency between occupational history and the findings of pathologic and mineralogical analyses could be explained by the difference in individual immunologic reactivity to hard metal dust despite the relatively small amount of unrecognized environmental exposure(ED: It's hard to understand what this phrase is trying to say).

This experiment was carried out to determine the effects of different sowing dates and cultivars on the forage yield and quality of winter rye (Secale cereale L.). The experiment was conducted in a split plot design with three replications. The main plots consisted of two sowing dates such as early (15 September) and late (30 September). The subplots consisted of rye cultivars of five different maturity groups such as 'Kodiak' (Late), 'Koolgrazer' (Early), 'Danko' (Late), 'Homil22' (Medium) and 'Olhomi1' (Early). Dry matter (DM) content at early sowing (19.7%) was higher than those at late sowing (17.8%), while crude protein (CP) and total digestible nutrients (TDN) contents at early sowing (16.6% and 61.6%) were lower than those at late sowing (16.8% and 63.1%). Although DM content of early maturing cultivars (Koolgrazer and Olhomi1) was higher than the other cultivars, CP and TDN contents of those were lower compared to other cultivars. The contents of fiber components (ADF, NDF and cellulose) at early sowing were higher than those at late sowing, while ADL and hemicellulose at early sowing were lower than those at late sowing. ADF and cellulose of early maturing cultivars were higher than those of the other cultivars, while ADL and hemicellulose of Danko were higher than that of the other cultivars. DM, CP, In vitro dry matter digestibility (IVDMD) and TDN yields at early sowing were higher than those at late sowing, and early maturing cultivars were higher than those of the other cultivars. Results of this study indicate that forage production technology in combination with early sowing and use of early maturing rye cultivar could enhance both production and quality of rye.

This study was carried out to investigate the growth characteristics, yield, and chemical compositions of corn hybrids for silage according to the drainage depths in a lowland paddy field. The experimental design was arranged in a randomized block design with four treatments and three replications. The drainage depths of the four treatments were 0 cm, 20 cm, 30 cm and 50 cm. Tip-filling degree, ear length, and ear circle were higher in the 30 cm and 50 cm treatments compared with the other treatments (p < 0.05); but the plant length, leaf length, leaf width, ear height, stem diameter, and stem hardness were not significantly different (p < 0.05). The brix was higher in the order of 20 cm > 0 cm > 50 cm > 30 cm treatment. The fresh yield, dry matter yield, and TDN yield increased as the drainage depth increased (p < 0.05). The crude-protein and crude-ash content were highest in the 50 cm treatment (p < 0.05), but the crude-fat, NDF, ADF, and crude-fiber levels were not significantly different (p < 0.05). The total mineral content was higher in the order of 0 cm > 30 cm > 20 cm > 50 cm treatment (p < 0.05). Fructose, glucose, and sucrose were highest in the 20 cm treatment. The total amino-acid (EAA + NEAA) content was the highest in the 50 cm treatment. Based on these results, greater drainage depths increased the yield and feed value of silage corn.
The purpose of this study is to compare the morphology, general composition, elemental composition and mineral contents of Phellinus linteus, Phellinus baumii and Phellinus gilvus. In the scanning electron microscopy, P. gilvus and P. linteus had a similar shape. In the elemental composition, all of the three Phellinus spp. showed similar percent for the analyzed components. In the general composition, the water content of P. linteus. P. baumii and P. gilvus were 13%, 15% and 10%, respectively. The dietary fiber of three Phellius spp. showed more than 30%. The range of vitamin C and protein content was 1.5-2.1 g% and 3.63-3.73 g%. respectively. In mineral analysis, P. baumii of the three Phellinus spp. has the highest calcium concentration (1,135 ppm). From the above results, P. linteus. P. baumii and P. gilvus did not show any differences in the general composition and elemental composition.
Cultural and nutritional conditions for Lyophyllum decastes and its chemical composition in a synthetic medium were investigated. The optimal temperature and pH for the production of mycelium were $25^{\circ}C$ and pH 7.5. The mycelium yield was the highest on 15th day. Among the carbon sources, glucose and CMC were the best for the production of mycelium and their optimal concentrations were 3 and 6%, respectively. As an organic nitrogen, proteose peptone was the best and $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$ as an inorganic nitrogen was good. The optimal concentration of proteose peptone and $(NH_4)_2HPO_4$ were 2 and 0.2%, respectively. The optimal ratio of glucose to proteose peptone for production of mycelium was 10 : 1. Also, the optimal concentrations of $K_2HPO_4$ and $MgSO_4$ were 0.2 and 0.06%, respectively and that of $CaCl_2$ was 0.1%. Among the bioextracts, yeast extract was the most effective and its optimal concentration was 1.5%. In chemical components of the mycelium of Lyophyllum decastes, total sugar, crude protein and crude fat were 34.80, 28.35 and 2.50%, respectively. Its ash was 7.57% and crude fiber 11.99%.
Drug interactions with food, on occasion, lead to serious nutritional and functional changes in the body as well as alterations of pharmacological effect. It, therefore, should be necessary to take drug interactions with food into consideration for effective and safe therapeutics. Diabetes mellitus is a heterogeneous group of disorders characterzed by abnormal glucose homeostasis, resulting in hyperglycemia, and is associated with increased risk of microvascular, macrovascular, and neuropathic complications. However, the precise mechanism of diabetes mellitus remains unclear. Three basic objectives in the care of diabetic patients are maintaining optimal nutrition, avoiding hypo- or hyperglycemia and preventing complications. Laminaria japonica is a brown macroalgae which can be used as a functional diet due to high content of diatery fiber. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of Laminaria japonica diet on the pharmacokinetics of metformin which are frequently used in the treatment of diabetes. Diabetic rats induced by streptozotocin were employed in this study. Blood concentrations of oral hypoglycemic agent, metformin, were measured by HPLC and resultant pharmacokinetic parameters were calculated by RSTRIP. The mechanisms of drug interaction with food were evaluated on the basis of pharmacokinetic parameters such as $k_{a},\;t_{1/2},\;C_{max},\;t_{max}$, and AUC. Administration of metformin in normal and diabetic rats treated with Laminaria japonica diet showed significant decrease in AUC, $C_{max},\;and\;k_a$, and increase in $t_{max}$, compared to those with normal diet. This might result from adsortion of metformin on components of Laminaria japonica, causing delayed absorption. The oral glucose test showed that Laminaria japonica diet could lower blood glucose level probably through either inhibiting the activity of disaccharidases, intestinal digestive enzymes, or delaying the absorption of glucose. More studies should be followed to fully understand pharmacokinetic changes of metformin caused by long-term Laminaria japonica diet.
Background: Clonidine, an ${\alpha}_2$ adrenergic agonist blocks nerve conduction. However, in our previous experiment we found that adrenaline neither blocks nerve conduction by itself nor augment nerve conduction blockade by lidocaine near clinical concentrations. Possible explanations are: 1) there may be antagonism between some of adrenergic receptors, 2) clonidine may block nerve conduction via non-adrenergic mechanism. The purpose of this study is to obtain dose-response curves of several different forms of adrenergic receptor agonist to see the relative potencies of each adrenergic receptors to block nerve conduction. Methods: Recordings of compound action potentials of A-fiber components (A-CAPs) were obtained from isolated sciatic nerves of adult male Sprague-Dawley rats. Nerve sheath of the sciatic nerve was removed and desheathed nerve bundle was mounted on a recording chamber. Single pulse stimuli (0.5 msec, supramaximal stimuli) were repeatedly applied (2Hz) to one end of the nerve and recordings of A-CAPs were made on the other end of the nerve. Dose-response curves of epinephrine, phenylephrine, isoproterenol, clonidine were obtained. Results: $ED_{50}$ of each adrenergic agonist was: $4.51\times10^{-2}$ M for epinephrine; phenylephrine, $7.74\times10^{-2}$ M; isoproterenol, $9.61\times10^{-2}$ M; clonidine, $1.57\times10^{-3}$ M. Conclusion: This study showed that only clonidine, ${\alpha}_2$ adrenergic agonist, showed some nerve blocking action while other adrenergic agonists showed similar poor degree of nerve blockade. This data suggest that non-effectiveness of epinephrine in blocking nerve conduction is not from the antagonism between adrenergic receptors.
When the soybean milk residue flour were added to the respective wheat flour at level of 5%, 10% and 15% the possibility of bread making were studied. Vital gluten was added to the soybean milk residue portion of a 10% composite flour at levels of 3%, 6% and 9% to improve bread quality. And test was baking properties of soybean milk residue composite flour and sensory evaluation of composite breads. Major components of soybean milk residue flour were crude protein, 22.0%; crude lipid, 13.2%; carbohydrate, 54.3%; and dietary fiber, 27.2%. When 5%, 10% and 15% soybean milk residue flour was blended with wheat flour, water absorption, development time and bread weight were increased, and volume of dough and loaf was decreased. But improved bread-making properties by adding gluten. Color of crumb got darker as the percentage of soybean milk residue flour increased, got brighter when gluten was added. Texture of bread increased in chewiness and hardness as the percentage soybean milk residue flour increased but not different in cohesiveness. The use of vital gluten showed influence to springiness, chewiness and hardness. The sensory evaluation showed that 5% soybean milk residue-wheat bread was similar to bread made from wheat flour in overall acceptability. And the bread made by miting gluten were better than 10% soybean milk residue-wheat bread in overall acceptability.
