A fiber-optic interferometric temperature sensor is fabricated using a hollow optical fiber with 8 um air hole. This interferometric sensor for measuring temperature consists of 13 mm long hollow optical fiber whose one end is attached to the single mode fiber and the other end is cleaved. After the sensor is put in a furnace, the phase change of the sensor output signal is measured as the temperature of the furnace increases from $28^{\circ}C$ to $100^{\circ}C$. The phase change of the fiber sensor is proportional to the change of temperature and the relationship between the change of phase and temperature is approximately linear. The sensitivity of this sensor is $2.7{\;}radians/^{\circ}C$.

An intensity-based optical fiber vibration sensor is applied to detect and evaluate damages and fiber failure of composites. The optical fiber vibration sensor is constructed by placing two cleaved fiber end, one of which is cantilevered in a hollow glass tube. The movement of the cantilevered section lags behind the rest of the sensor in response to an applied vibration and the amount of light coupled between the two fibers is thereby modulated. Vibration characteristics of the optical fiber vibration sensor are investigated. Surface mounted optical fiber vibration sensor is used in tensile and indentation test. Experimental results show that the optical fiber sensor can detect damages and fiber failure of composites correctly.

A single body type of fiber-optic current and voltae sensor using a rare earth doped YIG and a bismuth silicon oxide single crystsl is proposed, which is used for simultaneous measurement of the AC electric current and AC electric voltage over the trasmission lines. Experimental results showed that the fiber-optic current sensor has the maximum 7.5% error within the current range of 0A to 400A, and the fiber-optic voltage sensor has the maximum 0.87% error within the current range of 0V to 400V. The output waveforms of proposed fiber-optic sensor system has a good agreement with output waveforms of conductor current and voltage. Experimental results proved that the output of fiber-optic current sensor is not affected by the electric voltage applied to the fiber-optic voltage sensor, and also, that the output of fiber-optic voltage sensor is not affected by the electric current applied to the fiber-optic current sensor.
A wireless optical fiber interferometer arterial pulse wave sensor system is developed for remote sensing. The wireless optical fiber sensor system consists of Zigbee communication modules and an optical fiber interferometer arterial pulse wave sensor. The optical fiber arterial pulse wave sensor is an in-line Michelson interferometer enclosed with steel reinforcement in a heat-shrinkable tube. The Zigbee communication modules are composed of an ATmega128L microprocessor and a CC2420 Zigbee chip. The arterial pulse waves detected by the optical fiber sensor were transmitted and received via the Zigbee communication modules. The experimental results show that the wireless optical fiber sensor system can be used for monitoring the arterial pulse waves remotely.

Based on Faraday effect, the variation of current flowing through the conductor can be encoded as that of azimuth angle of light polarization propagating through the fiber coil wound onto the conductor. The amount of current can be obtained by measuring the variation of the light intensity transformed from that of the azimuth angle through a polarization analyzer. In this paper we propose a fiber-optic current sensor system that employs a fiber polarization analyzer as a sensor interrogation device. The fiber polarization analyzer was prepared by inscribing a long-period fiber grating on a high birefringent fiber. At the fixed wavelength of 1522.5 nm, the fabricated fiber device has the polarization extinction ratio of more than 25 dB. The measurement of large current up to 600 Arms was accomplished based on a simple fiber interrogation device and the measurement output of the sensor system showed a good linearity.

Fiber-guided sensor system using a generator and a receiver can detect the amplitude of load or pressure. However, this type of sensor can show some difficulties in detecting the location of damages and pressure loadings. To overcome this weakness of this type, the ultrasonic active fiber sensor, which has an integrated ultrasonic generator and sensing part, was developed in this study. By using this sensor system, the location of mechanical loads can be exactly detected. Moreover, the ultrasonic active fiber sensor is more cost-effective than an ultrasonic fiber sensor using two piezoelectric transducers which are used as a generator and a receiver, respectively. Two applications of the ultrasonic active fiber sensor are demonstrated: cure monitoring of lead and measurement of liquid level. Present results showed that the active fiber sensor can be applied for various environmental sensing.

In this paper, we studied the possibility of non-contact bill counting method using optical fiber sensor instead of traditionally used friction counting method. To implement non-contact counting, we designed and made optical fiber sensor and related parts. optical fiber sensor is made of optical fiber of 1mm diameter, photo diode and laser diode. Based on the conclusion which derived from preliminary experiment, instrument part is designed to make unevenness on the surface of bill paper and to stay parallel with optical fiber section. By analyzing the signal of optical sensor, we made counting program. Experimental instrument is composed of sensor part, instrument part, signal handling part. We checked the possibility of non-contact counting method after implementing experiment by using optical fiber sensor and instrument part.

This paper shows the development of flexible force sensor using the fiber Bragg grating. This force sensor consists of a Bragg grating fiber and flexible silicone rubber (DC184, Dow corning co. Ltd). This sensor does not have special structure to maximize the deflection or elongation, but have good sensitivity and very flexible characteristics. In addition, this sensor has the immunity to the electro magnetic field and can be multiplexed easily, which is inherited from the characteristics of fiber Bragg grating sensor. In the future, this sensor can be utilized the tactile sensor system minimizing the sensor size and developing the fabrication method.

The outstanding mechanical property of optical fiber and the merits of acoustic emission sensing technique are unified for novel sensor system. The generated ultrasonic wave from piezoelectric generator are propagated along the optical fiber and also sensed. The propagated wave can be influence by external pressure on the optical fiber or environmental circumstance. The optical fiber sensor using ultrasonic wave has advantages compare with existing sensor system. In this study, the sensitivity of the optical fiber sensor is experimentally investigated. As the applications of the optical fiber sensor system using piezoelectric ultrasonic waves, the point load on the optical fiber is measured and the monitoring system for the void fraction of two phase flows is developed. The experimental results show the linear relationship between sensed voltage and void fraction.
