Magnetization Processes in Partially Crystallized Co-Based Metallic Glass

  • It is shown that progressive crystallization of non-magnetostrictive Co-based metallic glass (VITROVAC 6030) leads to an increase of coercivity by more than three orders of magnitude. The mechani는 responsible for this phenomenon are interpreted showing that the main source for the giant increase of the coercivity is the pinning effect on the domain walls originating from the created crystallites of the size much smaller than the domain width (correlation length for ferromagnetic exchange interactions). It is also shown that gradually devitrified non-magnetostrictive metallic glass is an excellent model material for verification of N el's theory describing the Rayleigh rule.

함정에 의해 발생하는 수중 지자계 외란신호 분리방법에 대한 연구 (Study on Separating Underwater Earth Field Anomaly Generated by a Ship)

  • Magnetic anomaly generated around a ship is mainly due to the permanent magnetization(PM) and induced magnetization (IM) remaining on the hull. It is very difficult to predict the direction and its magnitude of the permanent magnetization distributed over the hull, that is caused by mechanical or thermal stress. In this paper, an effective method is proposed to separate two components, the one produced by PM and the other by IM, from the underwater earth field signal distorted by the ferromagnetic material of the ship. The method can easily provide the two kinds of magnetic anomaly through exploiting experimental results and 3D electromagnetic field analyses even though the PM distribution on the hull is not known. To validate the proposed method, a model ship is manufactured and tested. The results would be of much help to basis research for securing safe navigation of a ship against dangerous factors in underwater.

Effects of Mn Doping on Structural and Magnetic Properties of Multiferroic BiFeO3 Nanograins Made by Sol-gel Method

  • [ $BiFeO_3$ ]is a multiferroic material that attracts attentions of many research groups due to its potential as being ferroelectric and ferromagnetic above room temperature. We have prepared both undoped- and Mn-doped $BiFeO_3$ by sol-gel auto-ignition method. Doping of Mn has resulted in decreasing grain size from 60 to 32 nm. X-ray diffraction data show that the samples are pure and single-phase. Infrared measurements on $BiFeO_3$ and Mn-doped $BiFeO_3$ revealed intrinsic stretching vibrations of tetrahedral sites of $Fe^{3+}$-O and of octahedral $Bi^{3+}$-O as well. On the other hand, as the Mn concentration increases, the magnetic moment of $BiFeO_3$ increases. It gives some suggestions in manipulating structural and magnetic properties of $BiFeO_3$ by doping Mn.

Efficiency of Exponential Deperm Protocol

  • Magnetic treatment of surface vessels and submarines (Deperm) is required to camouflage them against magnetic detection from enemy marine force. So far, deperm has been accomplished by applying an alternating magnetic field of which amplitude decreases linearly. However, the reduction of the residual flux density in the direction of magnetic field is not linear in the case of the linear protocol, since the ferromagnetic material used to construct a surface vessel, mainly Fe-C, shows a nonlinear behavior in an alternating magnetic field. This is one of main reasons to make an ordinary deperm protocol inefficient. In this paper, we propose the exponential deperming protocol and compare the exponential protocol to conventional linear protocol within the framework of deperm performance. We found out that step number could be reduced in the exponential protocol compare with in the linear protocol, because the larger numbers of deperm steps are dedicated in the irreversible domain process region on the magnetic hysteresis.

  • Magnetite is the oldest magnet material known to mankind. It is getting attention again from solid state physics researchers now a days because it is one of the most strongly correlated electron systems. Spin, charge, and orbital orders are interplaying with lattice and involved in the Verwey transition where magnetization, conductivity, and structure changes suddenly. The peculiar ordering states above and below the transition temperature mainly originate from the coexistence of $Fe^{2+}$ and $Fe^{3+}$ ions in the B site of the inverse spinel structure. In particular, the state of the charge and orbital order was the oldest and most intriguing problem. NMR has made significant contribution to the investigation of this question. A. Abragam stated that there is no doubt that NMR is a very powerful tool for the study of ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic materials. In this mini-review, a short history of NMR investigation of magnetite is presented, providing a support to Abragam's claim.

비정질 강자성체 CoSiB/Pd 다층박막의 두께에 따른 수직자기이방성 변화 (Thickness Dependence of Amorphous CoSiB/Pd Multilayer with Perpendicular Magnetic Anisotropy)

  • 비정질 합금인 CoSiB과 비자성체 Pd을 이용하여 CoSiB/Pd 다층박막을 제작하고, 그 자기적인 특성을 분석하였다. $[CoSiB\;t_{CoSiB}/Pd\;1.3nm]_5$ 다층박막을 $t_{CoSiB}$ = 0.1~0.6 nm의 범위로 제작하였고, 동일한 방법으로 $[CoSiB\;0.3nm/Pd\;t_{Pd}]_5$ 다층박막을 $t_{Pd}$ = 1.0~1.6 nm의 범위로 제작하여 두께에 따른 자기이방성과 포화자화도를 측정하였다. CoSiB 두께가 증함에 따라 포화자화도가 증가하는 경향을 보였는데, 특히 CoSiB의 두께가 0.2~0.3 nm 일 때 포화자화도가 급격하게 증가하였다. 보자력은 두께 0.2 nm 에서 최대값을 보이다가 두께가 증가함에 따라 점차 감소하는 것을 확인하였다. Pd의 두께 변화 실험에서는 포화자화도는 1.1~1.2 nm 구간에서 약간 감소하다가 1.3 nm 이후 점차 증가하였으며, 보자력은 포화자화도에 비해 확연한 규칙성을 보이지 않았으나, 전체적으로 Pd의 두께가 증가함에 따라 값이 감소하는 것을 알 수 있었다.

Magnetic and Magnetotransport Properties of (1-x) $La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_3-xRE_2O_3$ (RE=La, Nd) Composites

  • Magnetic and magnetotransport properties of (1-x) $La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_3-xRE_2O_3$ (RE=La, Nd) (x = 0.025, 0.05, 0.075, 0.1, 0.2, 0.3) composite polycrystalline samples were systematically studied. Samples were prepared using conventional solid-state reaction. LSMO and $RE_2O_3$ react at high temperature and become chemically compatible. The ferromagnetic-paramagnetic transition temperatures ($T_c$) of the LSMO-$Nd_2O_3$ composite samples were decreased 313K~349K with increasing x, while the $T_c$ values of the LSMO-$La_2O_3$ composite samples were almost unaltered in the range of 355K~358K, representing that the ferromagnetism of LSMO might be more seriously degraded by Nd substitution on the ($La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}$) site. However, LSMO-$RE_2O_3$ composite samples exhibit greatly enhanced low field magnetoresistance (LFMR) and dMR/dH value without an appreciable increase in its resistivity. Remarkably improved LFMR properties are attributed to LSMO grain boundaries acting as effective spin-dependent scattering centers. The relationship among the $RE_2O_3$ addition, microstructure, magnetic and magnetotransport properties will be discussed in this paper.

α-Fe2O3 에 첨가한 미소량 EU 불순물의 효과에 대한 연구 (A Study of the Effects of Small Amount of Eu Impurities in α-Fe2O3)

  • Crystallographic, electric, magnetic and heat transition properties of $\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$ have been studied with a small addition of Eu impurities. Hematite($\alpha$-Fe$_2$O$_3$) is a basic ferromagnetic material having rhombohedral structure, which is similar to perovskites structure. Eu is a rare earth element that has an electric configuration of 4f$^{7}$ 6s$^2$. X-ray diffraction pattern of Fe$_{1-x}$ Eu$_{x}$O$_3$ (x = 0.00, 0.04, 0.06) shows an increament of a value when the amount of Eu impurities increased. The VSM data show an increment of magnetization by increasing the amount of Eu impurity. The one with x=0.06 shows the largest increment of magnetic remanence. The magnetic remanence varied from 0.49$\times$10$^{-3}$ emu/g to 0.62$\times$10$^{-3}$ emu/g when Eu impurity is increased by 2 %. Coercivity is decreased as Eu impurity is increased. Resistances is reduced significantly by Eu impurity. There is a clear difference in temperature-dependent resistance depending on the amount of Eu impurities. Especially, there are cusps between 150 K to 175 K. It indicates the change of electronic quantum states inside the atoms by rare earth impurities in rhombohedral structure. Temperature-dependent heat capacity shows that the most effective amount of Eu impurities is 6 %. %.

Carbon Rich 분위기에서의 KHR45강의 침탄특성 평가 연구 (Carburization Characteristics of MERT Type KHR-45A Steel in Carbon Rich Environment)

  • In this study, an HP-mod. type(KHR-45A), which is used as a heater tube material in the pyrolysis process, was evaluated for its carburizing properties. It was confirmed from the microstructural observation of the tubes that the volume fraction of carbide increased and that the coarsening of Cr-carbide generated as a degree of carburization increased. The depth of the hardened layer, which is similar to the thickness of the carburized region of each specimen, due to carburization is confirmed by measurement of the micro-Vickers hardness of the cross section tube, which thickness is similar to that of the carburized region of each specimen. Two types of chromium carbides were identified from the EBSD (electron back-scattered diffraction) image and the EDS (energy-dispersive spectroscopy) analysis: Cr-rich $M_{23}C_6$ in the outer region and Cr-rich $M_7C_3$ in the inner region of tubes. The EDS analysis revealed a correlation between the ferromagnetic behavior of the tubes and the chromium depletion in the matrix. The chromium depletion in the austenite matrix is the main cause of the magnetization of the carburized tube. The method used currently for the measurement of the carburization of the tubes is confirmed; carburizing evaluation is useful for magnetic flux density measurement. The volume fraction of the carbide increased as the measuring point moved into the carburized side; this was determined from the calculation of the volume fraction in the cross-section image of the tubes. These results are similar to the trends of carburization measurement when those trends were evaluated by measurement of the magnetic flux density.

Wideband RF Radiation from a Nonlinear Transmission Line with a Pre-magnetized Ferromagnetic Core

  • Experimental results and data of numerical simulations are presented, concerning generation of wideband radio frequency (RF) oscillations in a nonlinear transmission line (NLTL) which contains a pre-magnetized core of ferrite material. Emphasis is made on the means for extracting the RF signal from the line, in order to radiate it into free space. Antennas of two types that can be used for the purpose are considered, both featuring a coaxial design. This permits availing of the principal advantages of coaxial systems, such as operation in the mode of a traveling TEM wave; wide range of the transmitted frequencies, and a reasonably simple design. The antennas studied, specifically a disc-cone dipole (DCD) and an impulse reflector antenna ('Half-IRA', or HIRA type) differ significantly in effective width of the radiated spectrum and in spatial characteristics of the radiated field in far region.
