  • Magneto-Rheological(MR) fluid composes of a base fluid and ferromagnetic particles less than tens of micrometer size dispersed in the fluid. It is called as a smart material because its rheological properties are changable by a magnetic field. Its important applications are active devices such as controllable dampers and controllable clutches. The merit of those products is that their functional characteristics are controllable such that they enable active control strategies. This paper proposes an idea for machine tool applications of the MR fluid clutch as a safety device for power transmission. FEM has been used for magnetic field analyses and the results are compared with some former experiments. Some design syntheses of the MR clutches are suggested and hopefully considered that it may be an effective safety device for power transmission of machine tools.

  • For heat-assisted magnetic recording, magnetization reversal probabilities of nano-Pt/MnSb multilayer film with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy under thermal pulse activation were investigated numerically by solving the Landau-Lifshift Gilbert Equation. Magnetic parameters of nano-Pt/MnSb multilayer were used with anisotropy energy of $3{\times}10^5$ erg/cc and saturation magnetization of 2100 G, which offer more than 10 y data stability at room temperature. Scheme of driven magnetic field and thermal pulse on writing mechanism was designed closely to real experiment. This study found that the chosen material is potential to be used as a high density magnetic storage that requires low writing field less than two-hundreds Oersted through definite heating and cooling interval. The possibility of writing data with a zero driven magnetic field also became an important result. Further study is recommended on the thickness of media and thermal pulse design as the essential parameters of the reversal magnetization.

  • Terfenol-D is one of several magnetostrictive materials with property of converting energy into mechanical motion, and vice versa. Magnetostriction is the property that causes certain ferromagnetic materials to change shape in a magnetic field. Terfenol-D is said to produce giant magnetostriction, strain greater than any other commercially available smart material. In this paper, fundamental characteristics analysis of giant magnetostrictive materials(Terfenol-D) has been investigated. The magnetic field analysis is carried out by using finite element method simulation ANSYS. The results show 223N in force and 9.5T in maximum magnetic flux density and 7.56 $10^6A/m$ in maximum magnetic field intensity 1A current. Through the analysis, basic data of Terfenol-D for the application of mechanical system are obtained.

  • We have investigated the electronic structures and magnetic properties of both undoped and doped bcc Ni using the full-potential linearized augmented plane wave (FLAPW) band method. A ferromagnetic ground state is obtained at the equilibrium volume of bcc Ni. When the system is under strain, the nonmagnetic ground state is stabilized. When the Ni is doped with V, the $Ni_{16-x}V_x$ material loses its magnetic properties when x > 2. We have also discussed the possible superconducting properties of $Ni_{16-x}V_x$.

  • Magneto resistance properties in spin-valve sandwiches with various thickness of nanmagnetic layer in contact with the ferromagnetic NiFe film were investigated. The NiFe layer in contact with the NiO film was pinned by strongly exchange-biased coupling and the free NiFe layer at the film surface induced a sharp change in the magnetoresistance at -5~15Oe due to small coercivity. The NiO/NiFe/Cu/NiFe film showed a magnetoresistance ratio in the range of 2.3~2.9% and a field sensitivity above 2.2%/Oe with various of nonmagnetic layer. The NiO/NiFe/Cu/NiFe film of the field sensitivity above 2.2%/Oe suggests stang possibility of magnetic sensor matter.

  • Solid solutions between $BaTiO_3$ and $LaFeO_3$ have been prepared through a solid state reaction method. The X-ray diffraction results reveal that $Ba_{1-x}La_xTi_{1-x}Fe_xO_3$ ($0.1\;{\leq}\;x\;{\leq}\;0.7$) compounds have a cubic structure, whereas the parent material $BaTiO_3$ has a tetragonal structure. The magnetization measurements indicate that the materials have a magnetic ordering at room temperature and the magnetic properties of the solid solutions depending on the doping amount of $LaFeO_3$. The origin of magnetic behaviors is believed to be from $Fe^{3+}$ ions.

  • The material design and synthesis are of important to modem science and technology. Here, we report the synthesis of multifunctional nanomaterials with different properties: feroelecties $YMnO_3$ and multiferroic materials such as $CoFe_2O_4-YMnO_3,\;Fe_3O_4-YMnO_3,\;CoFe_2O_4-Cd_{0.85}Zn_{0.15}S,\;and\;Fe_3O_4-Cd_{0.85}Zn_{0.15}S$ nano-composites by using a chemical synthesis process. These results provide a simple and convenient synthesis process to produce multifunctional nanocomposites.

  • We have studied the magnetoresistance phenomena on spin valve thin films of antiferromagnetic NiO/CoO. Interlayer coupling oscillates between the antiferrocoupling and ferrocoupling with the variation of Cu thickness. The exchange coupling strength between NiO (antiferromagnetic) and NiFe(ferromagnetic) as a function of NiO texture and interface roughness is investigated by CoO insertion. CoO has significantly higher anisotropy in the (111) plane and interface roughness. It seems that the MR-ratio is increased by CoO inserted films. From the AFM and XRD data, the increase of MR-ratio and exchange field is influenced by the roughness of CoO.

  • Recently, a countermeasure for the electromagnetic noise emission on RF integrated transmission line using the loss generation of ferromagnetic thin films is briefly suggested$\^$1,2/. Without the magnetic film, the noise harmonics of the signal pass through the transmission line with only a little attenuation. The ideal role of magnetic film is not to raise insertion losses in the pass-band and to give as large attenuation as possible to eliminate the noise harmonics at the stop-band, the frequency range higher than the meaningful signal as shown in Fig. 1. and Fig. 2. • It is shown that progressive crystallization of non-magnetostrictive Co-based metallic glass (VITROVAC 6030) leads to an increase of coercivity by more than three orders of magnitude. The mechani는 responsible for this phenomenon are interpreted showing that the main source for the giant increase of the coercivity is the pinning effect on the domain walls originating from the created crystallites of the size much smaller than the domain width (correlation length for ferromagnetic exchange interactions). It is also shown that gradually devitrified non-magnetostrictive metallic glass is an excellent model material for verification of N el's theory describing the Rayleigh rule.
