  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the partial oxidation of the biological treatment plant effluents using Fenton's reagent as a pretreatment step prior to a tertiary biological oxidation of these effluents. Fenton's reagent was evaluated as a pretreatment process for inhibitory or refractory organics. Based on the Fenton oxidation system, the petrochemical wastewater treatment plant effluent was shown to have significant improvement in toxicity after oxidation with hydrogen peroxide. For example, at ranee of 42 ∼ 184 mg/L COD of petrochemical plant effluents, the COD removal efficiencies were from 38.2% to 60.1% after reaction with hydrogen peroxide 200 mg/L and Fe2+ 100 mg/L and reaction time was 30 minutes. The total TOC reduction were about 15.8∼22.4% with same test condition and difference between the overall removal rate and BOD/COD ratio after Fenton's oxidation estabilished in the biodegradation and otherwise meets the discharge standard or reuse for cooling tower make-up water.

  • We investigated the optimal experimental conditions and reaction kinetics for the decompositions of PCE, TCE, naphthalene, and chloroform using conventional Fenton oxidation process. Additionally, the influence of pH on the decompositions of PCE was also evaluated. The results indicated that the optimal pH value was around 3. The dosage of Fenton's reagent and the molar ratio of hydrogen peroxide to ferrous ion for an approximately complete decomposition was found to depend on the properties of the organic compound. Due to their unsaturated structures, the results show that PCE, TCE, and naphthalene could be all effectively decomposed by Fenton's reagent oxidation. Their unsaturated structures could be mostly destoyed within first 1-2 minutes at a low dosage with an certain molar ratio of hydrogen peroxide to ferrous ion. However the saturated compound such as chloroform was more difficult to decompose even with a relatively high dosage of Fenton's reagent.

  • The effects of important parameters such as reaction time and pH on the Fenton's process were evaluated using a batch reactor. It was proven that organic materials and heavy metals in leachate could be successfully removed by Fenton's reagent. Favorable operation conditions were investigated. It was observed that the reaction between ferrous iron and hydrogen peroxide with the production of hydroxyl radical was almost complete in 10 minutes. That is, the oxidation of organic materials by Fenton's reagent was so fast that it was complete in 30 minutes with batch experiments. With the formation of carbonic acid, pH of the batch reactor decreased to favorable acidic conditions without acid addition. The oxidation of organic materials in the leachate showed a pH dependence and was most efficient in the pH range of 2-3.

  • Reuse of industrial effluents through the cooling systems in a petrochemical complex was described. The partial oxidation of the effluents from the biological treatment plant was examined, using Fenton''s reagent as a pretreatment step prior to a next treatment of the effluents. Next tertiary treatment using fixed-film reactor resulted in marked reductions in COD and suspended solids. The continuous fixed-film process with Fenton oxidation pretreatment showed a 23% increase in the COD removal efficiency when compared to that without pretreatment of Fenton oxidation under the volumetric organic loading rate of 0.1 kg COD/m3/day. The Fenton oxidation treatment seemed to be a possible method for tertiary biological treatment to reduce the residual toxicity with the enhanced biodegradation of the effluents.

  • Fenton’s oxidation process is one of the most commonly applied processes to the wastewater which cannot be treated by conventional biological treatment processes. However, it is necessary to minimize the cost of Fenton’s oxidation treatment by modifying the treatment processes or other means of chemical treatment. So, as a method for the chemical oxidation of biorefractory or nonbiodegradable organic pollutants, the Photo-Fenton-Reaction which utilizes iron(11)salt. $H_2O$$_2$ and UV-light simultaneously has been proprosed. Therfore, the purpose of this study is to test a removal efficiency of dye-wastewater and treatment cost with Fenton’s and Photo-Fenton’s oxidation process. The Fe(11)/$H_2O$$_2$ reagent is referred to as the fenton’s reagent. which produces hydroxy radicals by the interaction of Fe(11) with $H_2O$$_2$. In this exoeriment, the main results are as followed; 1. The Fenton oxidation was most efficient in the pH range of 3-5. The optimal condition for initial reaction pH was 3.5 for the high CO $D_{Cr}$ & TOC-removal efficiency. 2. The removal efficiency of TOC and CO $D_{Cr}$ increased up to the molar ration between ferrate and hydrogen peroxide 0.2:1, but above that ratio removal efficiency hardly increased. 3. The highest removal efficiency of TOC and CO $D_{Cr}$ were showed when the mole ration of ferrate to hydrogen peroxide was 0.2:3.4. 4. Without pretreatment process, photo-fenton oxidation which was not absorbed UV light was not different to fenton oxidation. 5. And Fenton oxidtion with pretreatment process was similar to Fenton oxidation in the absence of coagulation, the proper dosage of F $e^{2+}$: $H_2O$$_2$ was 0.2:1 for the optimal removal efficiency of TOC or CO $D_{Cr}$ .6. Also, TOC & CO $D_{Cr}$ removal efficiency in the photo-fenton oxidation with pretreatment was increased when UV light intensity enhanced.7. Optimum light intensity in the range from 0 to 1200 W/$m^2$ showed that UV-intensity with 1200W/$m^2$ was the optimum condition, when F $e_{2+}$:$H_2O$$_2$ ratio for the highest decomposition was 0.2:2.5.EX>$_2$ ratio for the highest decomposition was 0.2:2.5.

  • The purpose of this research is to evaluate the removal efficiencies of COD$\_$Cr/ and color for the dyeing wastewater by the different dosages of ferrous solution and H$_2$O$_2$ in Fenton process. In the case of H$_2$O$_2$ divided dosage for the Fenton's reagent 7:3 of H$_2$O$_2$ was more effective than 3:7 to remove COD$\_$Cr/ and color. The results showed that COD$\_$Cr/ was mainly removed by Fenton coagulation, where the ferric ions are formed in the initial step of Fenton reaction. On the other hand color was removed by Fenton oxidation rather than Fenton coagulation. The removal mechanism of COD$\_$Cr/ and color was mainly coagulation by ferrous ion, ferric ion and Fenton oxidation. The removal efficiencies were dependent on the ferric ion amount at the beginning of the reaction. However, the final removal efficiency of COD$\_$Cr/ and color was in the order of Fenton oxidation, ferric ion coagulation and ferrous ion coagulation. The reason of the highest removal efficiency by Fenton oxidation can be explained by the chain reactions with ferrous solution, ferric ion and hydrogen peroxide.

  • A photo-labile compound which is bioinactive but, upon irradiation with light, yields bioactive species is called as "caged compound". Photolysis of caged compounds generating bioactive species, has become a general method to produce a desired amounts of bioactive species in the specific time interval at the desired place or area of the target biological systems. For this purpose, we designed and synthesized caged hydroxyl radical., "Photo-Fenton Reagent" NP-IIl. NP-IIl has a strong absorption maximum at 377 nm and yields hydroxyl radicals upon UV light irradiation. The antioxidant activity of the ${\alpha}$ -lipoic acid and other naturally occurring compounds has been examined by using NP-IIl as a molecular probe. For example, upon photoirradiation of NP-lII with BSA or apolipoprotein of human low density (LDL), the significant oxidative modifications were observed in both cases. The oxidation was completely suppressed in the presence of ${\alpha}$-lipoic acid, which clearly demonstrates the strong hydroxyl radical scavenging activity of ${\alpha}$-lipoic acid. Other applications of NP-lII will also be described

  • Dyeing wastewater contains recalcitrant organics which can not be easily treated by conventional biological treatment. Therefore it has to be treated by other advanced oxidation process in order to remove COD and Color more efficiently. Fenton oxidation process is one of the most commonly applied processes in removal of COD and color for the dyeing wastewater. However it increase the treatment cost and the production of sludge by the use of the excessive chemical reagent. Ozonation is not suitable in Single treatment process because it is not effective in organics removal compared with Color removal. The purpose of this research in order to evaluate the comparable removal efficiency of COD and color by the combination of advanced oxidation processes for the dyeing wastewater. The sequential treatment processes of Fenton process and ozonation was more effective to remove organics and color than ozonation and Fenton process. The result of Fenton process for the pretreatment presented as the 81% removal of organics whereas ozonation process for the pretreatent presented as the 22.1% removal of organics. The removal of colour was higher as 81.3% for the ozonation as the pretreatment than 77.7% for the Fenton process as the pretreatment.

  • In the conservation treatment of wood remains, polymers, treatment methods, and treatment period can be varied, depending on the percentage of moisture content and species of trees. Thus, in order to apply the appropriate conservation treatment, a lot of information from the wood remains are required. Despite the information from the wood remains, testing a part of the wood remains is necessary to get information about the polymers. When the wooden coffin made of camphor trees was excavated, it was cracked in the section of radiation, and there were hairlines cracks. Therefore, without any conservation treatment, it is impossible to restore it. This experiment is for the conservation treatment of the wooden coffin excavated from Songhyun-dong tombs No 7, Changnyeong. For this experiment, I used camphor trees from Jejudo. The purpose of this experiment is to asses the possibility of preliminary testing materials before the conservation treatment on the wooden coffin. After the camphor trees from Jejudo are artificially aged by Fenton's reagent, they are As a result of oxidation by Fenton, the degree of oxidation is high in proportion to the amount of peroxide and iron sulfate. Among several samples, the sample 'na' made the most similar result to the wooden coffin from Songhyun-dong. If I use this condition to make the sample in polymer tests, it is very helpful to find the most suitable polymer for the conservation treatment of wooden coffin. After the same species of trees are oxidized by Fenton and they become the similar condition, we are able to find suitable methods of conservation treatment. The suitable methods reduce the demage of the remains and make us to get more information. Thus, we are able to carry out conservation treatment more exactly.
