  • The Fenton reaction ($Fe^{2+}+H_2O_2$) has attracted considerable attention because of promising applicability as an environmental technology. While the various novel environmental technologies using Fenton reaction have been actively developed, the detailed mechanism of Fenton reaction is not clearly defined yet. As the major oxidizing chemical species, hydroxyl radical and high valent iron complex have been suggested to be produced in Fenton reaction in different mechamisms respectively. We critically summarized the basic issues regarding the microscopic mechanism of Fenton reaction.

  • The objectives of this study are to determine optimal operation condition of chemical coagulation with ferric chloride($FeCl_3$) and fenton reagent oxidation for effluents of a biological denitrification treatment and an existing lagoon treatment of landfill leachate, and to investigate the effect of alkalinity on fenton oxidation. In jar-tester, optimum dosage of ferric chloride for removal of COD was $1,500mgFe^{3+}/L$, removal efficiencies of $COD_{Cr}$ and $COD_{Mn}$ under this condition were about 55% and 64%, respectively. After chemical precipitation($1,500mgFe^{3+}/L$) of biological treatment effluent, optimum $Fe^{2+}/H_2O_2$ ratio of fenton oxidation was 1.5, the maximum removal efficiency of COD was about 80%, and optimum dosages of ferrous sulfate and hydrogen peroxide were $600mgFe^{2+}/L$ and $400mgH_2O_2/L$, respectively. The removal efficiency of COD was decreased as alkalinity was increased.

  • This study was carried out to apply some basic physical and chemical treatment options including Fenton's oxidation, and to evaluate the performances and the characteristics of organic and nitrogen removal using lab-scale biological treatment system such as complete-mixing activated sludge and sequencing batch reactor(SBR) processes for the treatment of leachate from a municipal waste landfill in Gyeongnam province. The results were as follows: Chemical coagulation experiments using aluminium sulfate, ferrous sulfate and ferric chloride resulted in leachate CO $D_{Cr}$ removal of 32%, 23% and 21 % with optimum reaction dose ranges of 10,000~15,000 mg/$\ell$, 1,000 mg/$\ell$ and 500~2,000 mg/$\ell$, respectively. Fenton's oxidation required the optimum conditions including pH 3.5, 6 hours of reaction time, and hydrogen peroxide and ferrous sulfate concentrations of 2,000 ~ 3,000 mg/$\ell$ each with 1:1 weight ratio to remove more than 50% of COD in the leachate containing CO $D_{Cr}$ between 2,000 ~ 3,000 mg/$\ell$. Air-stripping achieved to remove more than 97% of N $H_3$-N in the leachate in spite of requiring high cost of chemicals and extensive stripping time, and, however, zeolite treatment removing 94% of N $H_3$-N showed high selectivity to N $H^{+}$ ion and much faster removal rate than air-stripping. The result from lab-scale experiment using a complete-mixing activated sludge process showed that biological treatability tended to increase more or less as HRT increased or F/M ratio decreased, and, however, COD removal efficiency was very poor by showing only 36% at HRT of 29 days. While COD removal was achieved more during Fenton's oxidation as compared to alum treatment for the landfill leachate, the ratio of BOD/COD after Fenton's oxidation considerably increased, and the consecutive activated sludge process significantly reduced organic strength to remove 50% of CO $D_{Cr}$ and 95% of BO $D_{5}$ . The SBR process was generally more capable of removing organics and nitrogen in the leachate than complete-mixing activated sludge process to achieve 74% removal of influent CO $D_{Cr}$ , 98% of BO $D_{5}$ and especially 99% of N $H_3$-N. However, organic removal rates of the SBR processes pre-treated with air-stripping and with zeolite were not much different with those without pre-treatment, and the SBR process treated with powdered activated carbon showed a little higher rate of CO $D_{Cr}$ removal than the process without any treatment. In conclusion, the biological treatment process using SBR proved to be the most applicable for the treatment of organic contents and nitrogen simultaneously and effectively in the landfill leachate.e.

  • The effect of chemically oxidized intermediates of Polynuclear Aromatic Hydrocarbon (PAH) compounds on the degradation of the parent PAHs was characterized and evaluated for the context of cooxidation. Anthracene and pyrene exhibited extensive degradation (mean percent removal of 57.5%) after 28 days of incubation by introducing the Fenton oxidation intermediate of the PAH compounds, while unoxidized anthracene and pyrene exhibited 12.5% removal The chemical oxidation products can serve as a structually similar analogue substrates for a consortia of soil microorganisms and as a metabolic intermediates in the biodegradation sequence of the parent PAH compounds. These results may be interpreted in the context of cooxidation mechanism whereby high recalcitrant PAH compounds are biodegraded in the soil and suggest a potential tool for bioremediation of PAHs contaminated soils and protection of groundwater.

  • Bioslurping combines the three remedial approaches of bioventing, vacuum-enhanced free-product recovery, and soil vapor extraction. Bioslurping is less effective in tight (low-permeability) soils. The greatest limitation to air permeability is excessive soil moisture. Optimum soil moisture is very soil-specific. Too much moisture can reduce air permeability of the soil and decrease its oxygen transfer capability. Too little moisture will inhibit microbial activity. So Modified Fenton reaction as chemical treatment which can overcome the weakness of Bioslurping was experimented for simultaneous treatment. Although the diesel removal efficiency of SVE process increased in proportion to applied vacuum pressure, SVE process was difficulty to remediation quickly semi- or non-volatile compounds absorbed soil strongly. And SVE process had variation of efficiency with distance from the extraction well and depth a air flow form of hemisphere centering around the well. Below 0.1 % hydrogen peroxide shows the potential of using hydrogen peroxide as oxygen source but the co-oxidation of chemical and biological treatment was impossible because of the low efficiency of Modified Fenton reaction at 0.1 % (wt) hydrogen peroxide. NTA was more efficiency than EDTA as chelating agent and diesel removal efficiency of Modified Fenton reaction increased in proportion to hydrogen peroxide concentration. Hexadecane as typical aliphatic compound was removed less than Toluene as aromatic compound because of its structural stability in Modified Fenton reaction. What minimum 10% hydrogen peroxide concentration has good remediation efficiency of diesel contaminated groundwater may show the potential use of Modified Fenton reaction after bioslurping treatment.

  • In this study, the treatability of two target contaminants during the Fenton reaction, n-hexadecane and 1-methylnaphthalene, was evaluated as a function of the amounts of $FeCl_2$ and $H_2O_2$ injected into open and closed reaction systems. In the Fenton reaction of n-hexadecane and 1-methylnaphthalene, the mass recovery of the target contaminants was above 95% in the closed system. However, when the Fenton reaction was performed with high amounts of $H_2O_2$ and $FeCl_2$ injected in the open system, a reduction of approximately 40% of the initial mass of 1-methylnaphthalene was observed. This trend may be explained by the unique physical properties of 1-methylnaphthalene, which has higher volatility than n-hexadecane. Further, this trend was well correlated with the rise in high temperature at the initial reaction stage. Considering the mass recovery of the two target contaminants, the reaction temperature, and the residual concentration of $H_2O_2$ at different amounts of $FeCl_2$ and $H_2O_2$ injected, it can be suggested that the Fenton reaction should be performed with controlled conditions that can provide a suitable reaction environment between oxidant and contaminants.

  • In this study, photochemical advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) utilizing the Photo Fenton reaction ($Fe^{2+}+H_2O_2+UV$) were investigated in lab-scale experiments for the treatment of livestock wastewater. For the experimets, the livestock wastewater was pretreated by coagulation with $3,000mg/L\;FeCl_3$. The optimal conditions for Photo-Fenton processes were determined: pH was 5, the concentration of ferrous ion (Fe II) was 0.01 M. The concentration of hydrogen peroxide was 0.1 M, and molar ratio ($Fe^{2+}/H_2O_2$) was 0.1. The optimal reaction time was 80 min. Under the optimal condition of Photo-Fenton process, chemical oxygen demand (COD), color and fecal coliform removal efficiencies were about 79, 70, and 99.4%, respectively and sludge production was 7.5 mL from 100 mL of solution.

  • The present study was conducted to determine the protective ability of the ethanol extracts of Hypericum scabroides Robson & Poulter (HS) and Hypericum triquetrifolium Turra (HT) against the protein oxidation and DNA damage induced by Fenton system. The ability of HS and HT to prevent oxidative damage to bovine serum albumin (BSA) induced by $Fe^{3+}/H_2O_2$ and ascorbic acid was investigated. The ethanol extracts of HS and HT at different concentrations ($50-1,000{\mu}g/mL$) efficiently prevented protein oxidation induced by hydroxy radical as assayed by protein oxidation markers including protein carbonyl formation (PCO) and polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The effect of ethanol extracts of HS and HT on DNA cleavage induced by UV-photholysis of $H_2O_2$ using pBluescript M13+ plasmid DNA were investigated. These extracts significantly inhibited DNA damage induced by reactive oxygen species (ROS). Therefore, HS and HT extracts may be useful in the food industry as effective synthetic antioxidants.

  • Oxidation of phenol in aqueous media by electro-Fenton process using Ru-Sn-Sb/graphite electrode has been studied. Hydrogen peroxide was electrically generated by reaction of dissolved oxygen in acidic solutions containing supporting electrolyte and $Fe^{2+}$ was added in aqueous media. Phenol degradation experiments were performed in the presence of electrolyte media at pH 3. Effect of operating parameters such as current, electrolyte type (NaCl, KCl and $Na_2SO_4$) and concentration, $Fe^{2+}$ concentration, air flow rate and phenol concentration were investigated to find the best experimental conditions for achieving overall phenol removal. Results showed that current of 2 A, NaCl electrolyte concentration of 2g/l, 0.5M concentration of $Fe^{2+}$, air flow rate of 1l/min were the best conditions for mineralization of the phenol by electro-Fenton.

  • The removal of two dyes, namely Methylene Blue (MB) and Reactive Brillant Red (RR) from aqueous solution was investigated using magnetite iron coated pumice (MIP) composite in the Fenton-like oxidation process. A weight ratio of 2.5 g (with the molar ratio of Fe3+ to Fe2+ to be 2) (5%) of iron to the total pumice (50 g) was enabled during synthesis of catalyst. Surface composition and characteristics of the catalyst were assessed by SEM-EDX, FT-IR, Raman spectral analysis. The effect of the amount of pumice solely used or MIP, H2O2 concentration, pH and initial concentration of MB or RR dyes on Fenton-like process efficiency was investigated. EDAX spectrums of pumice and MIP showed that oxygen and silisium are the major elements. The Fe content of MIP increased to 2.24%. SEM, FT-IR and Raman spectrums confirmed the impregnation of Fe on pumice surface. The experimental results revealed that high removal rates of dyes could be obtained using MIP that demonstrated a higher stability for removal of MB dye. pH affected the removal efficiency of both dyes and the degradation of both dyes was sharply dropped when pH was increased above 4. The removal of dyes did not significantly change with increasing H2O2 concentration. Degradation rates of both MB and RR dyes increased 3.3 and 2.8 times with the use of MIP compared to pumice alone, respectively. Furthermore, MIP enabled a good removal efficiency at higher dye concentrations. It can be emphasized that MIP composite can be used in the heterogeneous Fenton-like systems considering the economic and easily separation aspects.
