  • A 1-year-old, intact female, Yorkshire terrier was referred with diarrhea and depression. Fecal examination indicated overgrowth of yeast-like organisms. CBC and blood smear revealed severe leukemoid reaction with degenerative changes of neutrophils. Radiographic examination showed decreased serosal detail and organomegaly, suggesting pyometra with peritonitis. Thus, the dog was suspected as pyometra with peritonitis. Culture and molecular analysis of the yeast-like organisms revealed that overgrown yeast was Candida parapsilosis.

  • A 12-year-old, female Maltese was referred with uncontrolled hyperadrenocorticism (HAC). Despite well management of HAC through treatment with trilostane and serial monitoring with ACTH stimulation tests for over three years, stiffness of the neck and limbs progressively worsened over time. Neurological test was performed, which showed no abnormalities of cranial nerves. Proprioception was delayed but the cause appeared to be due to stiffness of limb muscles. Muscle tone had increased over time and stiffness had worsened to the extent where it made walking difficult. MRI scans showed no orthopedic or spinal diseases, and pituitary microadenoma was confirmed with pituitary gland measurement of 6 × 6.4 × 4.5 mm (H × W × L). Electromyography presented random discharges with fluctuating amplitude and frequency, which were consistent with myotonic discharges. There were no improvements of myotonic signs despite treatment for HAC with trilostane. Supplementation of L-carnitine and coenzyme Q-10 to mitigate muscle stiffness, following diazepam and methocarbamol to help with muscle rigidity, failed to show any positive effect and the dog died a sudden death, 1,182 days after the initial visit.

  • A 7-year-old female mixed-breed dog was presented to a veterinary clinic for pyometra. During abdominal ultrasonography, an abnormal finding was noted in the gallbladder. A cholecystectomy was performed. Grossly, the gallbladder wall was thickened with a polypoid nodular projection into the lumen. Microscopically, the polyp consisted of a solid sheet of round to polygonal-shaped cells that formed small packets with fibrovascular septa. The neoplastic cells contained abundant cytoplasmic eosinophilic granules. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were positive to chromogranin A and neuron-specific enolase, whereas they were negative to vimentin and cytokeratin. This case was diagnosed as a primary gallbladder carcinoid tumor.

  • A 3-year-old, intact female English cocker spaniel dog was evaluated for an acute onset of tetraplegia. Utilizing magnetic resonance (MR) imaging, the cause of the neurologic deficits was determined to be an peracute hemorrhage of spinal cord. The MR study additionally demonstrated parenchymal hyperintensity on T2weighted images and similarly located hypointensity on T1weighted images. Hemorrhagic myelomalcia was suspected based on these MR characteristics, which was subsequently confirmed histopathologically.

  • A case of gastric adenocarcinoma signet ring cell type was described in a ten-year-old female Jindo dog having about three months history of vomiting, anorexia and weight loss. On radiology, ultrasonography and computed tomography, thickness of the gastric fundus was irregularly increased. On necropsy, the gastric fundus was markedly thickened and gastric rugae were attenuated. The cardia and distal esophagus were also thickened. On histopathology, the mucosa was obliterated by neoplastic proliferation of round to polyhedral cells. The neoplastic cells had abundant vacuolated cytoplasm containing mucin. The neoplasm was infiltrated into the submucosa and muscle layer. Metastatic focus was not observed.

  • A 9-month-old, intact female mixed dog was referred to Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Gyeongsang National University with symmetrically enlarged and protruded upper jaw. The patient was diagnosed as acute renal failure due to ethylene glycol poisoning and was treated for 1 month in a local animal hospital. In spite of treatment, the patient proceeded to chronic renal failure. Also, the patient's upper jaw begun to enlarge continuously. To evaluate this upper jaw, radiographic examination was performed. Skull radiographs revealed thickening of maxilla, decreased bone opacity, cortical thinning, loss of lamina dura and periodontal space in the maxilla. Diagnosis of rubber jaw syndrome is based on clinicial signs, radiographic findings and laboratory evidence of chronic renal failure due to ethylene glycol poisoning.

  • A 7 year-old intact female black spotted and white hair Shih-tzu dog visited for screening of vital condition and was suspected multifocal alopecia on physical examination. On dermatologic examination, alopecia with patches on black spot area, generalized seborrhea sicca, and bacterial infection were detected. Additionally, melanin clumping in the hair shafts on the alopecic area was detected by microscopic examination. Based on the signalment and dermatologic examination, black hair follicular dysplasia was diagnosed. To our best knowledge, this the first case report of black hair follicular dysplasia in Shih-tzu.

  • A 7-year-old intact female Maltese dog presented with a history of bite wounds. Physical examination revealed labored breathing, four puncture wounds with subcutaneous emphysema of the thorax, and paradoxical respiratory movement of the right thoracic wall. On radiography, a segmental fracture of the right 7th rib and a single fracture of the 8th rib were evident on the dorsal thorax. An inward displacement of the fractured segment and contusion of the right caudal lung lobe were identified with computed tomography. A diagnosis of pseudo-flail chest was made. Exploratory thoracotomy revealed a full-thickness muscular defect, a marked discoloration of the right caudal lung lobe, a segmental fracture of the right 7th rib, and a single fracture of the right 8th rib. Necrotic tissues were removed using surgical debridement. The fractured 7th and 8th ribs were corrected using a single interfragmentary wiring technique. The thoracic wall was reconstructed using the latissimus dorsi muscle flap. Additional thoracic stabilization using a thermoplastic splint was applied to correct paradoxical respiratory movement. The external splint was removed 4 weeks postoperatively. There was no evidence of respiratory abnormalities 18 months postoperatively.

  • A 13-month-old intact female poodle dog presented with an acute history of circling and seizure episodes. On the basis of the results of neurologic examination combined with magnetic resonance imaging and cerebrospinal fluid analysis (CSF), meningoencephalitis of unknown etiology (MUE) was suspected. Therapy with mycophenolate mofetil plus prednisolone was initiated, following which the clinical signs showed improvement for only one month before gradually worsening again. Acute progression of the clinical disease was observed, and the patient was euthanized 91 days after initial presentation. This case was definitively diagnosed as necrotizing meningoencephalitis (NME) according to the results of post-mortem histopathological examination. This report describes the clinical findings, serial magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) characteristics, and histopathological changes in a case of acute NME.

  • A 5-year-old intact female Maltese dog was referred to us with a history of left side head tilt and ataxia. Based on magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and cerebrospinal fluid analysis results, the patient was tentatively diagnosed to meningoencephalitis of unknown etiology (MUE). Clinical signs were gradually improved and diminished after imatinib mesylate plus prednisolone therapy. At 90 days after treatment, we performed MRI recheck and brain inflammatory lesions were significantly improved compared with initial MRI results. However, the present patient showed head turn and tetraparesis after anesthesia and euthanized according to client's request. This report describes the clinical findings, serial magnetic resonance imaging characteristics under imatinib mesylate treatment in a MUE case.
