  • Alopecia was the main complaint in a 4 year old female Cocker spaniel dog. bilateral alopecia has been presented on skin lesion for 10 months after ovariohysterectomy about one year ago. Hyperestrogenism was diagnosed by the blood estradiol level test. Left ovarian cyst was resected in the intact ovarian position by laparotomy. Total size of the cyst was about 3 cm and it was the shape of follicular cyst. Blood estradiol level is usually higher than normal in ovarian cyst. But even though estradiol level is in normal range, dermatitis could be induced because the number of estrogen receptor of the skin would be increased or the duration of estrogen secretion would be prolonged. Because the hyperestrogenism in this case is iatrogenic, exact and proper ovariohysterectomy should be made not to induce the complications.

  • A female mixed miniature pinscher dog, about 5 years old, 4 kg, was referred to veterinary teaching hospital of Chungnam National University with chief complaint of excessive hemorrhagic vaginal discharge for a month, partial alopecia and hyperpigmentation. There are no specific change with CBC, blood chemistry and X-ray findings but we figured out high estrogen concentration with hormone analysis and detected a majority of the superficial epithelial cells with pyknotic nuclei by cytologic examination of vaginal smear preparation and multiple ovarian cysts on both ovaries by ultrasonography. Based on the clinical signs, hormone analysis, vaginal smear preparation and ultrasonography, the authors diagnosed this case as hyperestrogenism with ovarian cysts.

In physical examination, firm elevated erythematous lesions were distributed throughout the axillary lesion. Fine needle aspiration cytology showed neoplastic epithelial cells with anisocytosis, high N:C ratio, and prominent nucleoli. Histologically, this lesion was consisted of a proliferation of undifferentiated neoplastic cells with eosinophilic cytoplasm. Mitotic figures of the neoplastic cells were observed and the neoplastic cells were intensely positive for cytokeratin. The presenting tumor was diagnosed as dermal apocrine gland adenocarcinoma.

Based on the patient's history, clinical signs, physical examination and ophthalmologic examination, extraocular myositis (EOM) was diagnosed. The exophthalmos was reduced after 7 days and disappeared after 14 days of corticosteroids treatment. Discontinuation of corticosteroids treatment can lead to recurrence of EOM, but in this case there was no recurrence for 2 months. This is the first reported case of canine extraocular myositis in Korea.

These 2 dogs were diagnosed based on which criteria as primary immune-mediated hemolytic anemia (IMHA). Blood examination showed anemia, spherocytosis, auto-agglutination and total bilirubinemia in 2 cases. These dogs were recovered by treatment of mycophenolate mofetil and prednisolone, and showed good prognosis until now. Mycophenolate mofetil is recommended as initial treatment in canine IMHA.

The patient was diagnosed as a sterile nodular panniculitis based on the cytology, histopathology, and cultures for bacteria and fungus. The fistulas were surgically removed and methylprednisolone was administrated 2 mg/kg twice daily per oral. The lesions were all disappeared, but the relapses were happened when the dosage of the drug was tapered off. The repeated treatments with methylprednisolone or azathioprine were performed, consequently, the patient was controlled with relatively low-dosage methylprednisolone (0.25 mg/kg, every third day).

  • Pectus excavatum (PE) is a ventral chest wall deformity, also known as funnel chest, sunken chest, chondrosternal depression or koilosternia. The 4 months old, 1.3 kg intact-female Pekingese dog was evaluated for acute semicoma and convulsion. The client reported that this patient have had chronic loss of appetite, intermittent dyspnea and palpable sunken breast. The other littermates did not show any abnormalities. On physical examination, cachexia (BCS 1/5), concave sternum, flatten thoracic cavity and cardiac murmur were observed. On radiographic study, the caudal sternum cave to vertebrae and narrowing thoracic cavity. The severities of thoracic deformity were evaluated by deformation indices such as-Frontosagittal index (FSI) and vertebral index (VI). Moderate to severe PE was founded by the radiological measurements.
