  • Voice disorders are most common in female teachers due to work-related vocal demands; however, only a few studies tried to evaluate individual risk factors with work-related risk factors to diagnose voice disorders. This study evaluated sixty-seven female elementary teachers (36 with voice disorders and 31 without voice disorders) to compare their vocal misuse, overuse, and vocal hygiene behaviors. Total Voice Handicap Index scores and VHI subscale (P, E, F) scores were not significantly different between two groups (p>0.05) and there was no relationship between VHI and acoustic measures (p>0.05). Loud talking, talking in noisy situations, and excessive speaking were significantly more frequent in female teachers with voice disorders (p<0.05) and thereby these overuse and misuse behavioral patterns were identified as risk factors to develop voice disorders in female teachers. Also, hydration was the most common behavior for vocal hygiene when experiencing vocal fatigue; however, hydration with hot green tea or coffee and throat clearing were often misused for vocal hygiene. This study found that female teachers from both groups presented higher voice handicap regardless of voice disorders. This study suggests a multidimensional voice assessment protocol is required to reflect voice problems in teachers and a vocal education program may be important to improve vocal hygiene knowledge and behavioral changes in female teachers.

  • This study investigated if and how work-family conflict and sex-role identity influence married female teachers' job involvement. The results of this study follow. First, married female teachers in the high work-family conflict group showed lower job involvement than that of those in the low work-family conflict group. The mean difference of job involvement between the high and low work-family conflict groups was not statistically significant. Second, the married female teachers with an Androgynous sex-role identity showed higher job involvement than those with a Feminine sex-role identity. Finally, the job involvement of Androgynous married female teachers was damaged less under high work-family conflict situations than that of Feminine married female teachers. These results imply that to increase married female teachers' job involvement, the improvement of physical/environmental conditions and psychological changes for women are necessary.

The results of the research are as follows. First, regarding the question of whether it is necessary or not to employ qualified male teachers in early childhood education institutes, both the female teachers and the parents responded positively in general. Second, when analyzing the perceptions of the role of male teachers, both teachers and parents believed that male teachers would be able to help children to develop their potential. Third, the female teachers indicated that they believed that the male teachers may need to develop a stronger sense of vocation, fairness, and sincerity when engaging in early childhood education. According to the parents, female teachers generally show greater affection and magnanimity towards children. Fourth, when examining the female teachers' perceptions of the male teachers' teaching capabilities, the findings indicated that their opinions were generally that the capabilities of male teachers depend on their training and educational level. Fifth, when examining the parent's perceptions of the male teacher's teaching capabilities, the results revealed that those parents who have experience of male teachers gave higher ratings regarding their capabilities than those parents who had no previous experience of male teachers. Finally, it was observed that, when comparing the teacher group with the parent-group, the teacher-group assessed the male teachers' teaching abilities higher than the parent-group did.
