Purpose: This study was done to identify types of subjective perception of their disease by adolescents who have insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) in order to better understand these adolescents and to determine effective nursing interventions. Method: Q-methodology was used in this study. The 36 Q-statements were selected through a literature review and in-depth interviews with participants. Data were collected from a 33 P-sample by sorting the 36 Q-statements into a 9 point standard. The data were analyzed using the PC QUANL program. Results: Five types of perception were identified: Type 1 being a recipient and having a will to cope with the disease, Type 2, seeking support from others, Type 3, emotional and negative coping, Type 4, pursuing own beliefs but with conflict at the same time, and Type 5 feeling under heavy pressure as their condition made them feel insecure, and they felt sorry to their families. Conclusion: The findings of the study are expected to contribute to improving clinical practices by helping nurses have a broader understanding of adolescents with IDDM, and exploring ideal nursing interventions.
Background: Prosthetic annuloplasty rings are used for the reconstruction of the mitral valve annulus. However, there is controversy over the best ring to use for reconstruction. In this study, we evaluated the long term result of using a Teflon felt strip as an alternative to commercial rings. Material and Method: From 1996 to 2007, we enrolled 47 patients with pure mitral regurgitation greater than grade III. All patients had an ejection fraction of 40% or more. Patients with congenital heart disease or other valvular heart disease were excluded from this study. They were divided into two groups; the commercial ring group (Group CR) and the Teflon felt ring group (Group TF). Result: There was no mortality. The postoperative echocardiography showed no significant change in the overall ejection fraction (from $58.0{\pm}11.2%\;to\;42.8{\pm}8.4%$). There were no significant differences between the two groups with regard to morbidity, the reoperation rate and recurrence of mitral regurgitation greater than grade II. Conclusion: The long term results from this study showed that posterior mitral annuloplasty using Teflon felt had similar results compared to annuloplasty using commercial rings.
Purpose: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has influenced the lives of people worldwide. Little is known about the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on the behavior and fears of pediatric patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and their families. We conducted a survey to determine the COVID-19 exposure, related perceptions, and information sources; medication compliance; and patients' and parents' behaviors, fears, and physician contact. Methods: An anonymous cross-sectional survey of pediatric patients with IBD and their parents at one pediatric gastroenterology unit of a university medical center was performed. Results: A total of 46 pediatric patients with IBD and 44 parents completed the survey. Parents of pediatric patients with IBD had high fear of their children becoming infected with severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2. They perceived schools as the most hazardous environment, whereas the children did not. Half the pediatric patients with IBD feared infection. Patients and parents felt sufficiently informed about COVID-19. The primary source of guidance for pediatric patients was their parents (43%), followed by television and social media, whereas the parents mainly consulted internet news websites (52.2%), television, and public health institutes. Pediatric patients with IBD adhered to their prescribed medication. They also showed cautious behavior by enhancing hand hygiene (84%) and leaving the house less frequently than before. However, in-person medical visits remained favored over video consultations. Conclusion: Although parents expressed overprotective concerns, both parents and pediatric patients with IBD are coping well with the COVID-19 pandemic. IBD-relevant information should be actively conveyed.

Crohn's disease (CD) is an idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) with unknown etiopathogenesis. Currently there are no definitive treatment modalities for CD. This case report presents clinical remission and its maintenance of CD induced by Korean herbal medicine treatment. A 56-year-old male patient diagnosed as CD by capsule endoscopy presented to a Korean Medicine clinic with severe abdominal pain as a chief complaint. Despite taking 5-aminosalicylic acid and immunosuppressant for 2 years, his abdominal pain was worsening at the time of visit. Treatment was initiated with Jinmoo-tang based on pattern identification and continued for approximately a year with some modifications according to patient's symptom changes. He was mainly given Jinmoo-Tang for a year and clinical remission was achieved; he could stop taking western medications. For 6 years since then, he took Korean medicine from time to time when he felt his condition went down and he is still maintaining remission. There were no adverse events reported. This case report suggests that individualized Korean herbal medicine treatment may have the potential for induction and maintenance of clinical remission of CD. Further research is warranted to establish an evidence-base for such approach.
Given the global impact of the AIDS pandemic, it is necessary to take every measure to prevent an epidemic of this disease in Korea. The only available strategy is prevention. Considering college students as a potential risk group, this study examined their knowledge of, and attitudes toward AIDS. In this study, a self-report questionnaire was administered to 167 students from three colleges in Taegu and Kyungbook province area. Findings indicated that most of the students had lacked knowledge about the AIDS. While knowledge about the modes of transmission and prevention improved, some respondents still believed that AIDS could be transmitted by sharing cups (17.4%), by coughing or sneezing(29.3%), and by moskito (25.7%). About 10% of the students reported that they had received some instruction about AIDS, and 87.3% indicated a desire to know more about the disease. Most of the students reported that they obtained AIDS information from media devices such as TV and newspaper. To the questions designed to examine attitude towards AIDS patients, the students showed a tendency to view AIDS patients as responsible for their own illness (85.6%). Interestingly, they showed sympathy to their imaginary friends and relatives suffering from AIDS (78.4%-90.2%). Eighty percercent of the respondents felt that they personally were not at risk. The study findings suggest a need for the development of AIDS educational programs for college students.
Purpose: The purpose of this research, using descriptive correlation design was to identify the extent to which the mothers having children with rare genetic metabolic diseases(MPS, PWS) have parenting stress and guilt feeling. Method: This study used PSI /SF(Abidin, 1995) and Guilt Index as devised herein. From 156 mothers, data were collected from February to July 2006, using self-administered questionnaires. This study received the approval from IRB at S Hospital (IRB File No: 2006-02-014). Data were analyzed with descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, and correlation. Results: Mothers felt very high level of parenting stress and sense of guilt. Parenting stress was related positively to guilt feeling. Conclusion: These findings could help understand the families of children with rare genetic metabolic diseases and those provide basic information in developing effective counseling and education programs for relief of parenting stress and guilt feeling. This study would be significant in the fact that it is the first research, targeting on the families of children with rare genetic metabolic diseases in Korea.
In an attempt to recognize attitudes of teachers and general public toward mental health, III teachers of middle and high school and 130 general public were selected for this study from September 6, 1975 to October 18, 1975. Date were collected through "Mental Health Questionnaire"designed by Nounally. Results of the study were as follows : 1. The selected teacher group and general public group revealed almost similar altitudes toward psychotic patients, that is, positive aspects for employment problems and relationship toward other persons. 2. Both teacher group and general public group revealed the same attitudes toward neurotic patients, felt relatively more reliance on them, and showed much more positive attitudes toward neurotic patients than psychotic patients. 3. Both groups indicated that, for the security of mental health, It is best way to show him the right path and make sure that he follows it. As to mental health, most of the selective subjects consulted with psychiatrist about the problems and obtained the information through books. 4. Both teacher group and general public group identified mental illness being equal in seriousness to alcoholism or cardiac disease. In case of a close relative living in their home having mental disease, most of them responded to be glad to help him. 5. Both teacher group and general public group revealed intensively negative attitudes toward mental hospital in order of despair. danger, and filth, while positive attitudes toward psychiatrist.
Purpose: This study was conducted in order to present basic policy data for introduction of a home-based physical therapy (HBPT) policy. Methods: The study surveyed physical therapists and patients for six weeks, in order to identify satisfaction with physical therapy. The statistical significance of the management plan with regard to costs and cost estimation and payment methods was determined and managed according to the operating principals of HBPT, eligibility criteria, number of visits, treatment time, and team approach. Results: Through the survey all groups of patients and physical therapists recognized the need for HBPT. They felt that the most desirable methods for activation of physical therapy visits involve precise diagnosis and evaluation through a team approach. While making regular visits to the patient three times a week, an expert visiting physical therapist with 3 to 5 years of experience in the clinical field could provide central nerve developmental treatment in less than 60 minutes; this service could be provided at a reasonable cost, minimizing unnecessary hospital visits, reducing time, medical expenses and facilitating a quick recovery due to psychological satisfaction resulting from a decrease in the psychological anxiety patients often experience in medical institutions. Conclusion: Based on the study results provided above, if HBPT is to be introduced, appropriate pricing and programs should be based on the results of pilot projects.
The odontogenic cutaneous fistula in facial area is uncommon but, well defined disease. It is difficult to diagnose from the dental origin of cutaneous sinus tract. Most patients may visit to the dermatologists or general hospital without cause of disease. They usually be treated by repeated surgical excisions, biopsies, and antibiotic medications, but suffered from recurrences. We studied odontogenic cutaneous fistula through retrospective study in Jeju Special Self-Governing Province between 1 January 2009 and 12 December 2015. There were 3 males, 5 females from 14 to 78 years old with an average age of 50.4 years old. Only 2 patients felt the toothache, others didn't detect it. They suffered from recurrences and repeated treatments for 3 to 11 months with an average period of 7.9 months. They visited average 2.8 hospitals before a precise diagnosis in a dental clinic. All cases were fully healed endodontic treatment or extraction of origin teeth without recurrences. In conclusion, the cause of cutaneous fistula in facial area can be odontogenic. If dentists or doctors diagnose a patient with cutaneous fistula on face, they should check dental problems or take x-ray views for precise diagnosis. It could be helpful for differential diagnosis.
Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand the experiences of those who take care of the elderly at a long-term care facility during the COVID-19 pandemic. Methods: Colaizzi's phenomenological research method was applied to describe the meaning and nature of the experiences of eight workers in an elderly care facility during the COVID-19 crisis. Results: Studies have shown that these workers experienced 'fear from infectious disease' and had the opportunity to 'reflect upon life changed by infectious disease.' They also worked together to overcome the crisis by 'protect nursing home with the nurses at COVID-19 sites' and felt 'safety from the nursing home,' and experienced 'a strong sense of calling for the job' through the crisis. Conclusion: This study is the first of its kind conducted in Korea on workers in an elderly care facility. The results indicate that it is necessary to supports these workers with practical useful education, counseling, and emotional support during the epidemic.
