The Cretaceous sandstone and felsite distributed in north-western border part of Taegu city were studied in the viewpoint of engineering geology with an emphasis of their discontinuities. The probability of continuity of sandstone is 0.69 and that of felsite is 0.56. The correlation coefficients of sandstone are 0.52 and 0.54. Those of felsite are 0.47 and 0.48. These values reflect that the rocks have been strongly jointed. $K_0$ value of the sandstone is close to its $K_a$ value and the test suggests that the sandstone has been in active state. On the other hand, $K_0$ value of the felsite is close to its $K_p$ value, which reflects that the felsite has been in passive state, in order to maintain the stability of the sandstone. $\delta$ value should be changed to be less than 13.2.
The Yeongdo Island in Busan City is a remnant of the latest Cretaceous volcano, and consists geologically of andesites, rhyolite tuff, pelitic and psammitic hornfelses, lapilli rhyodacite tuff of the Yucheon Group, felsite and felsite porphyry of the Bulgugsa intrusives, and Holocene sediments in ascending order. The hornfelses are bound to the Taejongdae Formation. The stratigraphic position of the Formation is determined definitely into the Yucheon Group, thus the geologic age is approximately the same with the volcanic rocks of the Group. The sediments had been thermally metamorphosed to make pelitic and psammitic hornfelses of the albite epidote hornfels facies by the effects of active hydrothermal circulation, vaporization, and hybridization of andesitic solution, or of basification of acidic intrusives. Thus, on occasion, those hornfelses are not used to be distinguished from the andesitic rocks in the southeastern part of the Korean peninsula. The paleocurrent direction determined from several cross-beddings of the Taejongdae Formation is suggested to be from southwest to northeast. Orbicular rocks occur in hornfelsed rhyolite tuff, pelitic- and psammitic-hornfelses, and felsite porphyry at a lot of outcrops in the area of southwestern shoreline of the Yeongdo Island. Orbicules in rhyolite tuff and hornfels in the island might have originated from diffusion processes of metasomatic metamorphism carried out by hydrothermal solution rised from the intrusive adamellite which may be emplaced deeply under the Yeongdo volcanics. Those orbicules are due to metasomatic, secondary, and epigenetic origin. Proto-, multi-shelled, and multi-cored orbicules are described in the orbicular tuff. But multi-cored orbicules are not found in the orbicular fornfels. 250 tuff-orbicules numbered sporadically are in $20,000m^2$ area of the locality of orbicular tuff. About 60 hornfels-orbicules occurred sporadically are in $1,700m^2$ area of the locality of orbicular hornfels in the Taejongdae Formation. Orbicules in felsite porphyry might have originated by diffusion reaction between xenoliths and a quiescent zone in felsite porphyry magma. Those are of igneous, primary, and syngenetic origin.

The felsitic intrusives of Bulguksa granitic rocks of late Cretaceous in age are located at Mt. Daeduk, Daegu, where two different types of tourmalines are found. Two tourmalines show rounded and radiating in morphology and are found in separated region, but in same felsitic rocks. In this study, we investigate the chemical differences between two types of tourmaline and the effect of growing condition of the crystal on the its morphology. The rounded tourmaline has more amounts of Al and vacancy and less amounts of Ca, Na, K, Fe, Mn, Mg, which commonly occupy X and Y-site of the tourmaline. On the basis of the Diffusion-limited aggregation model, morphological irregularity indicates the active mobility of the magma. The radiating tourmaline, therefore, crystallized with active magma condition relatively, and the rounded tourmaline crystallized with stable magma condition created by decreasing temperature and the concentration of felsic components as the magma differentiate continually.
The Bulgugsa acidic igneous rocks of the late Cretaceous age are largely distributed in Busan area, which is located in the southeastern corner of the Korean Peninsula. These igneous rocks comprise in ascending order, felsite, dacitic-rhyolitic welded tuffs, granite porphyry and granitic rocks. The former three members represent the early phase of volcanic activities, so that they are named as Jangsan volcanic rocks. The granitic rocks consist of granodiorite, hornblende biotite granite, Kumjongsan granite, fine grained granite, and Daebyen granite, represent the late phase of igneous activities. The Kumjongsan grainte, the largest pluton of the granitic mass, emplaced between two great vertical faults trending NNE. New chemical analyses of 33 rock samples of these acidic rocks are given. Their chemical compositions are generally similar to those of the late Mesozoic acidic igneous rocks of the northern Ashio mountains, and C-Zone granite group of the Ogcheon geosyncline, with their characteristic variation trends of several oxides. Their chemical compositions also show that $Al_2O_3$ is high value, and differentiation index is high, too. Systematically developing joints in Kumjungsan granite are divisible into two types at least. One is the NS-N $20^{\circ}E$ trendirig, $85^{\circ}{\sim}90^{\circ}$ dipping type of joint system which coincides with the trends of distribution of the granite mass and the dikes intruding this granite. Joints of this type may be cooling joints generated as tension cracks. The other is the $N60^{\circ}{\sim}70^{\circ}W$ or $N40^{\circ}{\sim}60^{\circ}E$ trending type of joint systems. It is considered that. joints belonging to this type may be shear joint occurring under the state of south-north tectonic couple acting at the east and west side of the granite mass. Igneous activities of the the Bulgugsa acidic igneous rocks in Busan area was taken place as. follows, formation of the magma reservoir, eruption and intrusion of felsite, consolidation of vents. and increasing vapor pressure in magma reservoir, eruption of pyroclastic flows, caldera collapse, intrusion of granite porphyry, and intrusion of granitic rocks at the latest stage.

In this study, both in-situ stress measurements and a lot of laboratory rock tests were conducted at a metal mine in Jeongseon, Korea. The stress ratio obtained from in-situ stress measurements showed a tendency to decrease according to depth below surface and its average value was 1.10. The mechanical properties such as unit weight, absorption ratio, porosity, elastic wave velocity, uniaxial compressive strength, Young's modulus, Poisson's ratio, tensile strength, shore hardness, friction angle and cohesion were investigated for the four different rocks mainly distributed at a studied mine, which were dolomite, felsite, granite and magnetite. The mechanical properties of the four different rocks were compared by means of statistical analyses, whereupon the felsite and the granite turned out to have more strength characteristics than the magnetite. The correlation of mechanical properties was also investigated, whereupon a few results against the general correlation were found out. The failure criteria of the four different rocks were finally discussed by means of both Mohr-Coulomb criterion and Hoek-Brown criterion.
This study has been designed to elucidate the petrography and geochemical characteristics of the volcanic rocks and focused on petrogenesis and tectonic environment of the Bokyeongsa volcanics in the northeast Gyeongsang Basin. The Bokyeongsa volcanics consist of the Naeyeonsan tuff which include rock fragment plagioclase, quartz and hornblende and pumice showing welded structures, and felsite. According to the petrochemical data, the Naeyeonsan tuff and felsite are in the range of 68${\sim}$71wt% and 77wt% SiO$_2$ content respectively. The Naeyeonsan tuff belongs to dacite/rhyodacite, and felsite to rhyolite. These volcanics rocks belong to the calc-alkaline rock series on the TAS diagram and the AFM diagram. The variations of major elements of the volcanic rocks show that contene of TiO$_2$, Al$_2$ O$_3$, FeO$^T$, MnO, MgO, CaO are inversely proportional to those of SiO$_2$, but contents of K$_2$O are positively. They represent differentiation trend of calc-alkaline rocks series. In spider disgram of MORB-normalized trace element partterns, contents of K, Rb, Th and Ta are relatively high, but those of Nb, Zr, Hf, Ti, Y and Yb are nearly similar to MORB. In the chondrite-normalized REE patterns, light REEs are more enriched than heavy REEs. The trace element composition and REE patterns suggest that they are typical island-arc calc-akaline volcanic rocks formed in the tectonomagmatic environment of subduction zone under continental margin.
To analyze lateral displacement of excavation walls exposed during the construction of Subway Line 1 in the Daegu region, inclinometer measurement data for sites D4, D5, and Y6 are investigated from the perspective of engineering geology. The study area, in the Banyawol Formation, Hayang Group, Gyeongsang Supergroup, is in the lower part of bedrock of andesitic volcanics, calcareous shale, sandstone, hornfels, and felsite dykes that are unconformably overlain by soil. The rock mass around the D4 site is classified as RMR-V grade and the maximum lateral displacement of 101.39 mm, toward N34W, was measured at a bedding-parallel fault, at a depth of 12 m. The rock mass around the D5 site is classified as RMR-IV grade and the maximum lateral displacement of 55.17 mm, toward the south, was measured at a lithologic contact between shale and felsite, at a depth of 14 m. The rock mass around the Y6 site is classified as RMR-III grade and the maximum lateral displacement of 12.65 mm, toward S52W, was measured at an unconformity between the soil and underlying bedrocks, at a depth of 7 m. The directions of lateral displacement in the excavation walls are vector sums of the directions perpendicular to the excavation wall and horizontally parallel to the excavation wall. Lateral displacement graphs according to depth in the soil profile show curvilinear trajectories, whereas those in bedrock show straight and rapid-displacement trajectories.
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the alkali-silica reactivity for aggregates in Korea according to test methods: accelerated mortar bar test (AMBT) by ASTM C 1260; chemical test by KS F 2545 (ASTM C 289). The results are as follows: The AMBT (ASTM C 1260) results showed that two (2) igneous rocks (two mica granite and felsite), three (3) sedimentary rocks (arkose, red sandstone and shale), two (2) metamorphic rock (slate and vitric tuff), one (1) mineral (quartz) showed more expansion than 0.1% at 14 days. But, some sedimentary rocks and metamorphic rocks expanded more than 0.1% at 28 days even though they were less than 0.1% at 14 days. Therefore, it is necessary to extend the experimental dates more than 14 days to evaluate the possibility of alkali-aggregate reactivity. The chemical test (KS F 2545) results showed that five (5) igneous rocks (andesite, diabase, granite porphyry, muscovite granite and diorite) were indicative of potentially deleterious expansion, while two (2) igneous rocks (diorite porphyry and quartz porphyry) were possible indicative of expansion, and three (3) igneous rocks (biotite granite, two mica granite and felsite) were indicative of innocuous reactivity. The above results showed that the results from chemical method (KS F 2545) and AMBT (ASTM C 1260) had little relationship.
The purpose of this study is to clarify the geological occurrence, mineralogical, physico-chemical and thermal properties of the sericite ore which located in Chungha area, Kyungsangbuk-do. The geology of this area are composed mainly of hornfels and some felsite porphyry. The sericitic ore is classified into sericite, sericite-quartz and quartz-sericite ore according to mineral assemblages. Mineral components in sericite ore are mainly sericite with minor quartz, apatite, sphene, zircon, ilmenite, bismuthinite, iron oxide and etc. Sericite-quartz ore are mainly composed of sericite and quartz. Accessary minerals are muscovite, epidote, zircon, sphene, iron oxide and etc. The chemical compositions of K2O, Al2O3, & Ignition loss in sericite and sericite-quartz ore increase than that of the host rock, while the composition of SiO2, Na2O & Fe2O3 decrease. Sericite and sericite-quartz ore are characterized by the specific gravity of 2.35 and 2.44, the pH of 4.36 cP and 2.36 cP respectively. The result of size analyses of sericite ore is 11.3% in grain volume concentration between 12.9 $\mu\textrm{m}$ and 11.1$\mu\textrm{m}$, and 32.3% between 9.6$\mu\textrm{m}$ and 12.9$\mu\textrm{m}$. The thermal expansivity of sericite and sericite-quartz ore show the similar pattern. The sericite ore shows the thermal expansivity of 0.31% at 50$0^{\circ}C$, 0.39~0.75% at 600~1,00$0^{\circ}C$ and 0.74% at 1,10$0^{\circ}C$. The sericite-quartz ore show the thermal expansivity of 0.29% at 50$0^{\circ}C$, 0.36~0.72% at 600~1,000% and 0.71% at 1,10$0^{\circ}C$.
