Feeding Habits of Larval Japanese Anchovy Engraulis japonicus in Eastern Jinhae Bay, Korea (진해만 동부해역에 분포하는 멸치(Engraulis japonicus) 자치어의 식성)

  • The feeding habits of larval Engraulis japonicas (3.2-11.0 mm SL) were examined based on 414 individuals, collected in October 2010, and from June to September 2011, in the coastal waters of Eastern Jinhae Bay, Korea. E. japonicus, fed mainly on copepods 62.6% IRI and tintinnid were the second-largest dietary component. E. japonicus diet also included small quantities of rotifers, eggs and diatoms. The results of analysis of ontogenetic changes showed that E. japonicus of small size classes (${\leq}4mm$) fed primarily on tintinnids. The dietary percentage of copepods decreased, as fish size increased, and monogeneans became increasingly important as size class increased above 4-6 mm. The highest rate of daily feeding E. japonicusi took place during the day.

  • Feeding habits of Syngnathus schlegeli were studied by using samples collected from the eelgrass bed in Kwangyang Bay, Korea from January 1994 to December 1994. Syngnathus schlegeli was a carnivore which mainly consumed copepods and epiphytal gammarid amphipods. Its diets included small quantities of caprellid amphipods, tanaids and mysids. It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. In its initial feeding stage, copepods were major food organisms. However, gammarid amphipods were heavily selected with the incretment of the fish size. Food availability in the eelgrass bed changed seasonally. Its main food items were changed according to variations of food availability. Copepods were mainly consumed in spring, and gammarid amphipods in summer and fall.

Feeding Habits of John Dory Zeus faber in the Coastal Waters off Gori, Korea (고리 주변해역에서 출현하는 달고기 (Zeus faber)의 식성)

  • The feeding habits of John Dory (Zeus faber) were studied by examining the stomach contents of 317 specimens collected from January 2004 to December 2005 in the coastal waters off Gori, Korea. The standard length (SL) of the specimens ranged from 12 to 42 cm. Z. faber is a piscivore and consumes mainly teleost fish such as Psenopsis anomala, Trichiurus lepturus and Conger myriaster. Its diet also includes shrimp and cephalopods. Smaller individuals (<25 cm SL) consume shrimp and small fish such as Glossanodon semifasciatus. The proportion of these prey items decreases with increasing fish size, and this decrease is paralleled by increased consumption of lager fish such as Psenopsis anomala and Trichiurus lepturus. The prey size increases with Z. faber size.

  • The feeding habits of brown barracuda (Sphyraena pinguis) were analyzed using the stomach contents of monthly samples collected from coastal waters of Gadeok-do, Korea from January to December, 1998. Brown barracuda occurred mainly from summer to autumn in the study area, and ranged from 15 to 35 cm in standard length. Brown barracuda was a piscivorous fish which, mainly consumed teleost fish such as anchovy (Engranlis japonicus) and chefoo thryssa (Thfssa kammalensis). Its diet also included small quantities of shrimp and cephalopods. Although smaller fishes (<25 cm SL) consumed shrimp and cephalopods as well as fish, larger fishes (>30 cm SL) consumed exclusively teleost fish. The prey size increased with increase of fish size.

  • The feeding habits of chub mackerel (Scomber japonicus) were studied based on an examination of the stomach contents of 512 specimens collected between November 2005 and October 2006 in the South Sea of Korea. The specimens ranged in fork length (FL) from 23.4-37.5 cm. Chub mackerel is a piscivore and consumes mainly Teleosts such as Engraulis japonicus. Its diet also includes amphipods, crabs, Euphausia, chaetognaths and shrimp. Smaller individuals (<26 cm FL) consume mainly crabs. The proportion of these prey items decreases with increasing fish size, and this decrease paralleles the increased consumption of fish. The prey size increases with S. japonicus size.

  • The feeding habits of olive flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus were studied using 126 specimens collected from coastal waters off Taean, Korea from April 2008 to March 2009. The total lengths of P. olivaceus ranged from 16.7 to 40.6 cm. P. olivaceus was a piscivore that consumed mainly fishes. The diet also included small quantities of shrimps, cephalopods, polychaetes and mysids. Although, P. olivaceus mainly consumed fishes of all size classes, some degree of change in diet composition was found; i.e. after fishes, smaller individuals fed more on shrimps, whereas larger individuals consumed more cephalopods.

  • The feeding habits of Sebastiscus marmoratus collected from the Western Coastal Waters of Jeju Island between June 2008 and July 2009 were studied based on examination of the stomach contents. A total 254 individuals of S. marmoratus ranged from 13.2 to 29.6cm (mean 20.7cm) in Standard length (SL). S. marmoratus consumed mainly teleosts such as Chromis notata and Sebastes inermis. Its diet also includes shrimps and crabs. The individuals smaller than 15cm SL consumed mainly shrimps, but on the other hand the individuals larger than 25cm SL consumed mainly fishes. The proportion of fish consumption increased with increasing size of S. marmoratus.

Dietary Habits and Nutrient Intakes according to Feeding Method during Infant Period in Elementary School Students (충남 일부지역 초등학생의 영아기 영양법에 따른 식습관과 영양섭취상태)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine dietary habits and nutrient intakes according to feeding method during infant period in elementary school students. Subjects were 1,251 elementary school students. Subjects were divided into three groups, breast-fed group (N=508), formula-fed group (N=397), and mixed group (N=346), according to feeding method during infant period. The questionnaire was composed of general characteristics, dietary conditions during infant period, dietary behaviors, and dietary intakes and was completed by children and children's parents. Average age, height, weight, and body mass index were 11.6 years, 139.0 cm, 34.6 kg, and $17.8kg/m^2$, respectively. The formula-fed group showed a smaller proportion of subjects with colostrum feeding (P<0.001) compared to the breast-fed and mixed groups. Frequency of eating snacks was significantly higher in the mixed group than in other groups (P<0.05). There was no significant difference in dietary habit total score and nutrient intakes according to feeding method during infant period. Feeding method in during infant period was associated with dietary habits (milk and vegetable intake habits) up to growth period of elementary school. A longitudinal and systematic study is needed to clarify this relationship.

It showed ontogenetic changes in feeding habits. In an initial feeding stage, copepods were major food organisms. However, crab larvae and polychaetes were heavily selected with increasing fish size. Although copepods and crab larvae were major prey organisms for all seasons, the relative proportion of these two food items changed with season.

Diet composition and feeding strategy of John Dory, Zeus faber, in the coastal waters of Korea

  • Background: Most fish undergo prey switch from juvenile to adult. It is thought that slightly different feeding habits occur among adult fishes due to growth, spawning, habitat change, and so on. Therefore, the diet of the John Dory Zeus faber (≥ 24 cm TL) was studied in the coastal waters of Korea by analysis of stomach contents, with comparison by season and size class of diet composition and prey diversity. Monthly samples were taken from February 2017 to January 2018. Results: The results showed that the John Dory was a piscivorous predator, and pisces had occupied 82.3% of IRI%. Trichiurus lepturus and Trachurus japonicus were important preys in all size classes and seasons. Diet composition differed among the size classes and seasons (Chi-square test, P < 0.05). As body size of Z. faber increased, the occurrence of benthic fish (Glyptocephalus stelleri) tended to increase. The seasonal prey composition also changed depending on the abundant species of each season. Conclusions: Z. faber is a piscivorous predator. The consumption habits of Z. faber appear to different results by their size and seasons. This study suggests that Z. faber could be considered an opportunistic predator.
