  • The aircraft nose landing gear (NLG) can suffer of an unstable vibration called shimmy that is responsible of discomfort and of fatigue stress on the gear strut components. An adaptive controller is proposed in this paper to cope with the aforementioned problem. It is based on a method called Modified Simple Adaptive control (MSAC) which is able of governing the NLG motion by using a feedback signal that relies on just one output of the plant. The MSAC only asks for the passivity of the controlled plant. With this aim, a parallel feedforward compensator is employed in this work to let the system satisfies the almost strictly passivity (ASP) requirements. The nonlinear equations that govern the aircraft NLG shimmy vibration behavior are used to analyzed the controlled system transient response undergoing an initial disturbance and taking into account different taxiing speed values.

  • This note considers the class of controllers with integral action which arise directly from appropriate system models. Via internal model principle approach, a corresponding class of self-tuning controller is shown to have both integral action in controller and offset removal in the tuning algorithm. The key idea is to constrain the estimator in each step in order to ensure that dc gain of feedforward and feedback polynomial of adaptive controller are always equal, thus allowing the loop integrator to work properly.

  • Active control method is applied to a flexible beam excited by a shock impulse by focusing on reducing the residual vibrations after the shock input. It is assumed that the shock input can be measured and is always occurred on the same point of the beam. If the system is well identified and the corresponding inverse system is designed reliably, it has shown that a very simple feed-forward active control method may be applied to suppress the residual vibrations without using an error sensor and adaptive algorithm. Both numerical simulation and experimental result show a promising possibility of applying to a practical problem.

  • An adaptive controller which is robust to the unknown load disturbance is developed for electro-hydraulic speed control systems. Since the load disturbance degrades the performance of the controller such as a steady state error and rise time in the conventional control system, appropriate adjustment of the controller is necessary in order to obtain the desired performances. The adaptation mechanism was designed to tune the feedforward gain, based upon minimization of ITAE (integral of time-multiplied absolute error) performance. The unknown load distrubance was identified by using an analog computer from the relationship between the velocity of the hydraulic motor and the load pressure. To evaluate the performance of the controller a series of simulations and experiments were conducted for various load conditions. Both results show that the proposed adaptive controller shows abetter performance than the conventional controller in terms of the steady state error and rise time.

  • This paper presents a new approach to the design of adaptive control system using DSPs(TMS320C31) for robotic manpulators to achieve accurate trajectory tracking by the joint angles Digital signal processors are used in implementing real time adaptive control algorithms to provide an enhanced motion control for robotic manipulators. In the proposed contorl scheme, adaptation laws are derived from the improved Lyapunov second stability analysis method based on the adaptive model reference control theory. The adaptive controller consists of an adaptive feedforward controller, feedback controller, and PID type time varying auxillary control elements. The proposed adaptive control scheme is simple in structure, fast in computation, and suitable for implementation of real-time control. Morever, this scheme does not require an accurate dynamic modeling nor values of manpipulator parameters and payload. Performance of the adaptive controller is illustated by simulation and experimental results for a SCARA robot.

  • In this paper, the case study of reducing rotational errors is done for a grinding spindle with an active magnetic bearing system. The rotational errors acting on the magnetic bearing spindle are due to mass unbalance of rotor, runout, grinding excitation and ed nonlinear dynamics of electromagnets. For the most case, the electrical runout of sensor target is big even in well-finished surface; this runout can cause a rotation error amplified by feedback control system. The adaptive feedforward method based on LMS algorithm is discussed to compensate this kind of runout effects, and investigated its effectiveness by numerical simulation and experimental analysis. The rotor orbit size in both bearings is reduced about to 5 pin due to lX rejection by feedforward control up to 50,000 rpm.

  • Adaptive feedforward control(AFC) is largely aimed for improving control performance of dynamic systems particularly involving periodic disturbance signals in engineering fields. This paper presents a novel hybrid AFC approach for specific systems with multiple disturbances in control input and state variables. The proposed AFC mechanism is hierarchically composed of the conventional AFC and a PID typed auxiliary control law in parallel. The former is generic to decrease periodic disturbance in control actuators and the latter is additionally constructed to overcome control deterioration due to time-varying uncertainty of given systems. We carry out numerical simulation to test reliability of the hybrid AFC system and compare its control performance with a well-known conventional AFC method in terms of time and frequency domains for proving of its superiority.

  • A neural network based adaptive reconfigurable flight controller is presented for a class of discrete-time nonlinear flight systems in the presence of variations of aerodynamic coefficients and control effectiveness decrease caused by control surface damage. The proposed adaptive nonlinear controller is developed making use of the backstepping technique for the angle of attack, sideslip angle, and bank angle command following without two time separation assumption. Feedforward multilayer neural networks are implemented to guarantee reconfigurability for control surface damage as well as robustness to the aerodynamic uncertainties. The main feature of the proposed controller is that the adaptive controller is developed under the assumption that all of the nonlinear functions of the discrete-time flight system are not known accurately, whereas most previous works on flight system applications even in continuous time assume that only the nonlinear functions of fast dynamics are unknown. Neural networks learn through the recursive weight update rules that are derived from the discrete-time version of Lyapunov control theory. The boundness of the error states and neural networks weight estimation errors is also investigated by the discrete-time Lyapunov derivatives analysis. To show the effectiveness of the proposed control law, the approach is i]lustrated by applying to the nonlinear dynamic model of the high performance aircraft.

  • A proposed hybrid self-tuning control scheme for single rod hydraulic cylinder which has varying loads is presented here. An adaptive controller is developed for the system that use feedforward and P feedback control for simultaneous parameter identification and tracking control. Through experimental results, the performance comparison of the hybrid self-tuning controller with a constant gain P contro- ller clearly shows its superior ability in handling load changes in quiescent states.

  • A self-tuning control scheme, incorporated with the simplified 1st-order ARMAX(Auto-Regressive Moving Average eXogenous) model, for single rod hydraulic cylinder which has varying dynamic characteristics is presented here. An adaptive controller is developed for the system that uses feedforward and optimal feedback control for simultaneous parameter identification and tracking control. Through experimental results, the performance comparison of the self-tuning controller with a fixed gain proportional controller clearly shows its superior ability in handling load changes in quiescent states.
