Effect of feeding frequency on reproductive performances and stress responses in gestating sows

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the influence of feeding frequency on a sow's reproductive performance and stress response during gestation. A total of twenty multiparous sows (Yorkshire × Landrace) were used in a completely randomized design based on their parity, body weight (BW), and backfat thickness (BFT), and the sows were allotted to two different feeding systems: 1) once daily feeding (OF) and 2) twice daily feeding (TF) in corn-soybean meal based diets. The gestation diet was formulated to contain 3,265 kcal of metabolizable energy (ME) / kg, 12.90% of crude protein (CP), and 0.75 % of total lysine. The lactation diet was formulated to contain 3,265 kcal of ME / kg, 16.80% of CP, and 1.08% of total lysine and provided ad libitum during lactation. In gestation, sow BFT and BF changes were not affected by feeding frequency, but higher BW and BW gain from day 35 to 90 and day 35 to 110 were observed in OF sow (p < 0.10). In lactation, feeding frequency did not influence on BW, BW gain, BFT, BF changes, average daily feed intake, and wean-to-estrus interval. Also, there were no differences in litter size, litter weight and piglet weight in lactating sows. OF sows had higher (p < 0.05; p < 0.10) protein, solid-not-fat, and total solid concentrations in colostrum compared to TF sows, while OF sows had a lower (p < 0.05) lactose concentration in colostrum compared to TF sows. Sows in OF showed significantly lower average daily water consumption (ADWC) from day 35 to 110 of gestation (p < 0.05). While there were no significant differences in stereotypic behaviors and salivary cortisol levels during gestation between treatments, the OF sows showed less time spending on the activity at day 105 (p < 0.05). In conclusion, reduced feeding frequency increased BW gain during gestation, decreased activation time, and changed the colostrum composition. This information may contribute to the understanding of the physiological and behavioral change of gestating sows by manipulating feeding frequency.

Streptozotocin-유발당뇨쥐에서 함초첨가 식이의 항당뇨 및 항산화 효과 (Hypoglycemic and Antioxidant Effect of Dietary Hamcho Powder in Streptozotocin-induced Diabetic Rats)

  • 염생 식물인 함초의 기능성을 규명하기 위하여 S.D.계 백서에 당뇨를 유도시킨 후 5% 함초 분말 식이로 5주간 실험 사육한 후 혈청지질ㆍ혈당농도와 주요장기의 당 대사 및 항산화 효소의 활성 변화활성을 측정하여 함초의 섭취가 당질ㆍ지질대사 및 항산화 효소계에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 당뇨군에서 함초의 섭취는 식이효율을 증가시켜, 당뇨에 의해 나타나는 체중감소현상을 억제하여 당뇨의 증세를 완화시켰다. 또한 함초의 섭취는 혈당강하효과 및 혈청 총 지질과 중성지방 저하효과를 보였다. 따라서 함초의 섭취는 당뇨쥐의 섭취는 당뇨쥐의 지질상승억제 및 혈당 저하 효과로 항당뇨 효능을 나타낼 수 있을 것으로 사료된다. 또한 당뇨합병증의 발생기전을 항산화효소와 관련시켜 연구하고자, 간과 시장의 항산화관련 인자를 측정한 결과, 당뇨에 의해 정상수준으로 회복되었다. 또 GR의 활성도는 함초 당뇨군(DH)의 간조직에서는 증가하였으나 신장에서는 오히려 감소하였다. 따라서 본 연구는 함초 섭취가 고혈당 및 고지혈증을 억제하고 당뇨로 인한 항산화 효소 활성변화를 정상으로 회복시킴을 밝혀 함초를 활용한 건강식품개발 위한 가능성을 제시하는 바이다.

Determination of the Nutritive Value of Tropical Biomass Products as Dietary Ingredients for Monogastrics Using Rats: 1. Comparison of Eight Forage Species at Two Levels of Inclusion in Relation to a Casein Diet

  • In balance experiments with rats either 25 or 50% of the casein protein in the control diet was replaced with one of the following eight sun-dried tropical biomass products: water spinach plants (WS) (Ipomoea aquatica Forsk), leucaena leaves (LL) (Leuceana leucocephala), duckweed plants (DW) (Lemma minor L.), groundnut foliage (OF) (Arachis hypogaea L.), trichantera leaves (Tric) (Trichantera gigantea), indicago leaves (Ind) (Indigofera hirsuta), mungbean foliage (Mb) (Phaseolus aureus), and cassava leaves (CL) (Manihot esculenta Crantz). The experiment included 102 rats with six individuals per treatment group. In three of the 16 biomass treatment groups, feed intake and weight gain of the rats were unacceptably low, and therefore they were excluded from the statistical evaluation, The crude protein (CP) content of the biomass products varied between 20.9% (Tric) and 33.2% (DW), whereas the content of NDF varied between 18.5% (Ind) and 32.2% (DW) of dry matter (DM). The total content of essential amino acids (g/16 g N) was comparable with that of alfalfa meal, except for GF and Tric, which were inferior. Between plant species, differences in dietary digestibility of organic matter (dOM) and CP (dCP) were observed (p<0.001). Also, the replacement level negatively influenced dOM and dCP (p<0.001). The lowest values for dOM (p<0.001) were observed for diets including biomass products with the highest content of NDF (OF, Tric, Mb, LL). Digestibility of CP was negatively affected by level of protein replacement. Significant (p<0.001) differences were found in N-retention and biological value among diets with different biomass products. The most favourable overall results were obtained for DW, WS and CL. The main factors affecting the nutritive value of the diets tested were their NDF content, dCP and AA profile of the biomass. Also antinutritive component(s) may have influenced the process of digestion and metabolism of some of the biomass products.

Streptozotocin으로 유발한 당뇨 흰쥐의 혈당 및 혈청 지질함량에 미치는 가시오가피 추출물의 영향 (Effect of Acanthopanax senticosus Extracts on Blood Sugar and Serum Lipid Profiles of Streptozotocin-Induced Diabetic Rats)

  • Effects of Acanthopanax senticosus extract (AS) on blood sugar content and serum lipid profiles of streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats were investigated. Experimental groups were classified into four groups, that is, normal control (NC) group, diabetic mellitus (DM) group, AS-fed group and DMAS-fed group. The AS group showed lower feed efficiency than the NC group, but the efficiency of DMAS group was higher than DM group. DMAS group showed the decreased water intake and urine by $45.5\%$ and $23.7\%$ respectively, compared with DM group. Compared with DM group, DMAS group decreased blood sugar by $46.9\%$ and triglyceride by $17.8\%$, total cholesterol by $10.0\%$ and LDL cholesterol by $22.0\%$ in serum, but increased serum HDL cholesterol by $14.4\%$ The relative percentage of liver or kidney per body weight, and the serum ALT activity in DMAS group were lower than those of DM group. There were no significant differences in hepatic glutathione(GSH) contents and total xanthine oxidase(XOD) activities among experimental groups. The hepatic lipid peroxide(LPO) content in DMAS group decreased by $54.6\%$ compared with that in DM group. The XOD (O type) and the ratio of O type to total type of both STZ-treated groups (DM and DMAS) were higher than those of NC group, but less conversion of D to O type was observed in DMAS group than in DM group. There was no significant difference in GST activity between NC and AS, but STZ-treated groups showed lower glutathione S-transferase(GST) activity than NC. In conclusion, it seems that AS reduces blood sugar by inhibiting the activity of xanthine oxidase type O as an oxygen-free radical generating system which induces the tissue damage. Antidiabetic effect of AS may regulate diabetes-induced high lipid profiles in blood.

참게류의 양식에 관한 연구 I. 동남참게, Eriocheir japonicus 의 야외사육지별 성장효과 (Experimental Culture of the Korean Mitten Crabs I. Growth of Korean Mitten Crabs, Eriocheir japonicus at Different Outdoor Culture Methods)

  • 1994년 7월 21일부터 1995년 10월 23일까지 논, 지수, 비닐하우스 야외사육지를 이용하여 동남참게를 사육한 결과, 1. 사육기간중 수온은 $1.5{\circ}C$~34.2${\circ}C$이었으나, 먹이를 정상적으로 먹은 기간의 수온은 15${\circ}C$~30${\circ}C$로 나타났으며, 이는 총 460일의 사육기간 중 281일(61.1%)에 해당되었다. 2. 증중량은 논(1,711.3 g), 지수(1,565.4 g), 비닐하우스(1,220.0 g)사육지의 순이었고, 생존율은 지수922.7%), 논(18.7%), 비닐하우스(18.3%)사육지의 순이었으며, 갑폭의 일간성장률은 논(0.61%), 지수(0.60%), 비닐하우스(0.59%)사육지의 순으로 논 사육지의 증중량 및 일간성장율이 타 사육지보다 다소 양호하였다. 3. 사육종료시 사육지별 갑폭의 출현모드를 보면 지수 및 비닐하우스 사육지의 모드는 3 cm군으로 나타난데 비하여 논 사육지는 모드가 4 cm군으로 나타났을 뿐 아니라, 증줄량과 일간성장율도 다소 높고 벼 경작도 병행할 수 있어 타 야외사육지보다 동남참게 양식에 적합한 사육지로 사료되었다. 4. 동남참게 내장의 일반성분을 분석한 결과 양식산이 자연산에 비하여 조지방 함량이 다소적게 나타난 것을 제외하고는 영양성분상의 큰 차이는 없었다.

Effects of dietary supplementation of fermented wheat bran on performance and blood profiles in weaned pigs

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effect of supplementation of fermented wheat bran (FWB) on growth and blood characteristics in weaned pig. A total of 36 weaned pigs ($Landrace{\times}Yorkshire{\times}Duroc$; BW, $7.78{\pm}0.04kg$) were randomly allocated to three dietary treatments with different FWB concentrations (0, 0.5, and 1.0%), and each treatment had 3 replicate pens with 4 pigs per pen. The FWB was obtained from a mixture of wheat bran and two microbes (Lactobacillus plantarum M10 and Saccaromyces cerevisiae) and was determined to contain $10.19{\pm}0.27log\;CFU/g$ of L. plantarum and $7.73{\pm}0.38log\;CFU/g$ of S. cerevisiae. Experimental diets were prepared by mixing 0 (control), 0.5, or 1.0% of the FWB to the basal diet, and fed to the weaned pigs for 7 weeks. During the experimental period, the pigs had access to the diet and water ad libitum. Feed intake increased significantly in the 1.0% FWB group compared to the control and 0.5% FWB groups (p < 0.05), whereas the other growth parameters were not different among the treatment groups. White blood cells and lymphocytes were significantly decreased in the FWB treatment groups compared to the control group, but other blood corpuscles were not different among the treatment groups (p < 0.05). The pigs fed 0.5% FWB showed greater serum IgG than the control and 1.0% FWB groups (p < 0.05). In conclusion, the FWB fed to weaned pigs did not negatively affect their growth performance, but rather reduced mortality by fortifying immunity.

Influence of Dietary Addition of Dried Wormwood (Artemisia sp.) on the Performance, Carcass Characteristics and Fatty Acid Composition of Muscle Tissues of Hanwoo Heifers

  • An experiment was conducted to examine the performance and carcass characteristics of Hanwoo (Korean native beef cattle) heifers and the fatty acid composition of muscle tissues of the heifers when the animals fed diets containing four levels of dried wormwood (Artemisia sp.). For the experiment the animals were given a basal diet consisting of rice straw and concentrate mixed at 3:7 ratio (on DM basis). The treatments were designed as a completely randomized design with two feeding periods. Heifers were allotted in one of four dietary treatments, which were designed to progressively substitute dried wormwood for 0, 3, 5 and 10% of the rice straw in the basal diet. There was no difference in body weight gain throughout the entire period between the treatment groups. Feed conversion rate was improved (p<0.05) only by the 3% dried wormwood inclusion treatment compared with the basal treatment. Carcass weight, carcass yield and backfat thickness of all treatment groups were not altered by wormwood inclusion. The 5% dried wormwood inclusion significantly increased (p<0.05) the size of loin-eye area over the other treatments. The higher levels (5 and 10%) of dried wormwood inclusion resulted in the higher (p<0.05) water holding capacity (WHC) in loin than the lower levels (0 and 3%) of wormwood inclusion. The redness ($a^*$) and yellowness ($b^*$) values of meat color were significantly lower (p<0.05) in the top round muscle of heifers fed the diet containing 3% dried wormwood. There was a profound effect of the progressively increased intake of dried wormwood led to the linear increase of unsaturated fatty acid content and the linear decrease of saturated fatty acid content in the muscle tissues of Hanwoo heifers. It is concluded that the feeding diets containing dried wormwood substituted for equal weights of rice straw at 5% levels would be anticipated to provide better quality roughage for beef heifer production and economical benefits for beef cattle producers.

천마 분획물이 고지방식이를 급여한 흰쥐의 혈청 지질농도에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Gastrodiae rhizoma Fractions on Serum Lipid Concentrations in Rats Fed with High Fat Diet)

  • 건강식품소재로서 천마의 효능과 활용방안을 모색하고자 고지방식이를 급여한 흰쥐에게 천마성분 분획물이 혈청 지질함량과 동맥경화유발지수 등에 미치는 영향을 조사하였다. 시험기간은 총 12주간으로 실험 1기는 초기 6주 동안 흰쥐사료에 유지를 첨가한 고지방식이(HFCD)를 급여하였고, 실험 2기는 6주 동안 천마성분 분획물을 함께 투여하였다. 천마성분 분획물로는 에탄올 가용성인 저분자분획(MW<1K, GR-1), 수용성 획분에 pronase처리한 다당체분획(GR-2), periodate를 이용한 다당체산화를 통하여 단백질분획(GR-3)을 조제하여 사용하였다. 시험 종료체중은 고지방대조군이 천마분획물군 보다 평균 44 g 정도 높았지만 통계적인 차이는 없었으며 증체량, 식이섭취량 및 식이효율(FER) 역시 유의적인 차이가 없었다. 실험 2기 종료후 측정한 혈청 지질중 TC와 TG농도는 다당체 분획을 투여한 경우에 고지방대조군에 비해 각각 21.5, 39.6% 낮았다. HDL콜레스테롤은 단백질분획이 저분자분획과 다당체분획 보다 높았고, LDL콜레스테롤은 천마분획물 투여군에서 고지방대조군 보다 유의하게 낮았다. 동맥경화위험지수는 단백질분획이 1.45로 다른 천마성분 분획물들의 $1.94{\sim}2.05$, 대조군의 2.12에 비해 가장 낮았다. 따라서 천마 다당체 또는 단백질분획 같은 수용성 고분자분획은 혈중 지질함량 및 조성을 개선시킬 수 있는 기능성 식품소재로 활용될 수 있을 것으로 사료된다.

가미자도환(加味慈桃丸)의 항암(抗癌) 및 면역증강효과(免疫增强效果)에 관한 부험적(實驗的) 연구(硏究) (Experimental Studies on the Anti-tumor and the Immunomodulatory Effects of Jiaweicitaowan(加未慈桃丸))

  • This experimental study was carried out to evaluate the anti-tumor and the immunomodulatory effects of Jiaweicitaowan(加未慈桃丸) against cancer. The in vitro anti-tumor effects were evaluated by MTT assay. The cytotoxicity, extension of survival days, the effect of inhibition solid tumor which was induced sarcoma 180, and the changes of body weight were evaluated for in vivo effects of anti-tumor. To evaluate the immunomodulatory effects of Jiawei- citaowan(加未慈桃丸), delayed type hypersensitivity, hemagglutinin, hemolysin titers for humoral immune response, rosette forming cells for cell-mediated immune response, natural killer cell activity, proliferation of lymphocyte, productivty of Interleukin-2, and carbon clearance were measured with methotrexate treated mice. The results were as follows; 1. In the case of existence ability of tumor cell, IC50 had an anti-tumor ativity resulted 2.52mg/ml to SNU-C4. 0.41mg/ml to SNU-396, resulted to 0.09mg/mlSNU-1. 2. The groups of Jiaweicitaowan(加未慈桃丸) 10mg/ml, 20mg/kg had no body weight loss. reduction in intake of water and feed, so these had no toxicity. 3. In the case of the effect of extention of existence. the group of 20mg/kg Jiaweicitaowan(加未慈桃丸) extract treated group was showed 250% in ILS. 4. The effect of inhibition solid tumor was significantly decreased in both 10mg/kg, 20mg/kg of Jiaweicitaowan(加未慈桃丸) extract treated groups as compared with control group S. The groups of 10mg/kg, 20mg/kg Jiaweicitaowan(加未慈桃丸) had significant effect of body weight change compared to control group. 6. Delayed type hypersensitivity was not significant in both Jiaweicitaowan(加未慈桃丸) extract treated groups as compared with control group. 7. Hemagglutinin and Hemolysin titers were significantly increased by dose-dependent. so these results showed that the humoral immume respose was activated. 8. For the effect of rosette formimg cells was not significant in hoth Jiaweicitaowan(加未慈桃丸) extract treated groups as compared with control group. 9. Natural killer cell activity was significantly increased in both Jiaweicitaowan(加未慈桃丸) extract treated groups as compared with control group in the ratio of 100: 1, 50: 1 of effector and target cells, but in the ratio of 10:1, the Jiaweicitaowan(加未慈桃丸) extract treated groups were not significant. 10. The proliferation of lymphocyte and productivty of Interleukin-2 were significantly increased by dose-dependent in both 10mg/ kg, 20mg/ kg of Jiaweicitaowan(加未慈桃丸) extract treated groups as compared with control group. 11. In the phagocytic effect, the 20mg/kg of Jiaweicitaowan(加未慈桃丸) extract treated group showed the increasing effect with significance as compared with control group. According to the results, we can suggest that Jiaweicitaowan(加未慈桃丸) has the antitumor and the immunomodulatory effects.

Aspergillus oryzae 접종 잔반사료가 산란계의 생산성과 계란의 품질에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Feeding Aspergillus oryzae Inoculant Food-waste Diets on Performance and Egg Quality in Laying Hens)

  • 본 시험은 시중에 유통되고 있는 일반 건조 잔반을 AO 배양물로서 산란계에 급여하여, 산란계의 생산성과 계란 품질에 미치는 영향을 구명하고자 실시하였다. 시험축은 평균 체중이 $1.5\pm0.5kg$인 50주령 산란계(ISA-Brown)를 공시하였고, 기초사료로 산란계 중기 사료를 급여하였으며, 시험사료는 대조구(Control), 잔반사료(FW)와 AO 배양물사료(AFW)를 각각 $25\%,\;50\%,\;75\%$씩 기초사료를 대체하여 총 7처리구, 3반복, 반복당 8수씩 168수를 공시하였다. 시험기간 중 사료섭취량에서 전처리구간 차이는 없었으나, FW구의 $50\%$ 처리구에서 대조구에 비해 유의적으로 감소했고, 산란률에 있어서는 대조구 $89.8\%$에 비해 AFW $25\%$ 처리구에서는 차이가 없었으나, 전 처리구에서 유의적으로 낮았다(p<0.05). 음수량은 잔반 사료의 대체 수준에 따라 증가하였다(p<0.05). 난중, 난각 두께 및 난각 강도는 전 처리구간 차이가 없었다. 호우유니트와 난황색에서는 남은 음식물 사료의 첨가에 따라 뚜렷한 차이를 보였으나(p<0.05) $50\%$ 이상의 첨가에서는 차이가 없었다. 남은 음식물사료의 첨가에 따른 난황내 콜레스테롤 함량에는 전 처리구간 차이가 없었다. 이러한 결과로부터, 잔반 사료는 산란율을 떨어뜨리지만, 난질 개선에 효과가 있고, 산란계 사료의 첨가제로서 AO 접종 잔반 사료의 사용이 가능할 수 있음을 시사한다.
