Effects of Cultivars and Seeding Dates on Chemical Composition and Energy Content of Switchgrass (Panicumvirgatum L.) in Republic of Korea

  • The objective of this study was to determine the best performing switchgrass (Panicumvirgatum L.) cultivar with three different seeding dates as a bioenergy source in Republic of Korea. Split-plot in time with three replications was performed and three switchgrass cultivars, Carthage (CT), Cave-in-Rock (CIR), and Forestburg (FB) were used in this experiment from 2009 to 2012. Plots were seeded on April 23, May 4, and May 13, 2009 and were harvested once in November each year. No fertilizer was applied to the field for the first year; however, in second and third years (June 2010 and May 2011, respectively), N, $P_2O_5$ and K2O fertilizers were applied in 67,45 and 90 kg $ha^{-1}$, respectively. Soil pH (5.9) and climate condition including temperature ($10.4{\sim}17.5^{\circ}C$) and precipitation (89.4~109.8 mm $month^{-1}$) were suitable for switchgrass cultivation. Total dry matter yields were higher in CT and CIR compared to FB and were 16.9, 15.9, and 4.5 ton $ha^{-1}$, for CT, CIR, and FB, respectively (p<0.0001). The samples were analyzed for dry matter (DM), crude protein (CP), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), acid detergent fiber (ADF), crude fiber (CF), ether extract (EE), and ash. No significant differences in energy content (p = 0.96) and chemical composition among cultivars (p>0.05) were found. Seeding dates did not affect DM yield (ton $ha^{-1}$), chemical composition and energy content significantly (p>0.05). Significant difference was observed for heights among CT, CIR, and FB (177.59, 169.98, and 94.89 cm, respectively, p = 0.0002). In conclusion, based on soil characteristics and climate condition in Korea compared to other countries, switchgrass can be cultivated successfully. Considering dry matter yield and energy content of these three cultivars of switchgrass CT and CIR adapted better to climate in Middle Eastern of Republic of Korea than Forestburg for bioenergy purpose.

  • In optmizing cutting condition for face milling operation, tool wear is an important maching factor. For the purpose of establishing the relationship between various maching factor and tool wear, cutting tests have been performed. As a result, hardness and chemical composition of workpiece material, chemical compositition and grain size of cutting tool and cutting speed have been selected as machining factor. In addition, relationship between feed rate and workpiece hardness has been observed. Prior to utilizing cutting condition recommended by 'Machining Data Hardbook(MDH)' as a Knowledge base, an analysis for the validity has been provided. Based on this analysis, tool life criteria applied by MDH has been modifiied. Finaly, using MDH recommended data for neural network trainning, we can compensate the result form the trained neural network for optimizing cutting condition for some given workpice and cutting tool.

어린 숭어(Mugil cephalus)의 담수사육에서 염분흡착 사료가 성장, 생존율 및 체액의 조성에 미치는 영향 (Effects of Supplemented Salt in the Diet on Survival, Growth and Body Fluid Composition of Juvenile Grey Mullet (Mugil cephalus) Reared in Freshwater)

  • 숭어 치어의 담수 사육을 위한 저염분 순화방법과 이에 따른 적응 능력을 높이기 위하여 염분사료를 공급하여 이에 따른 성장, 생존율 및 어체의 생리상태를 비염분사료구와 비교하였다. 실험 종료시 전장과 체중의 성장률은 해수사육구(SWN), 순차적으로 담수로 옮긴 염분사료구(GFWS) 및 순차적으로 담수로 옮긴 비염분사료구(GFWN)에서 빠르게 담수로 옮긴 염분사료구(FWS) 및 빠르게 담수로 옮긴 비염분사료구(FWN) 순서로 나타났다. 비만도는 모든 실험구에서 서로 차이를 보이지 않았다. 실험어의 생존율은 순차적으로 담수로 옮긴 염분사료구가 92.2${\pm}$2.2%로 가장 높았으나, 다른 실험구와 차이가 없었다. 어체의 수분함량은 빠르게 담수로 옮긴 비염분사료구에서 해수구보다 높게 나타나 차이를 보였다. 체액의 삼투질 농도는 실험 종료시에 모든 실험구에서 차이를 보이지 않았다. $Na^+$ 농도는 실험 종료시 해수사육구, 순차적으로 담수로 옮긴 비염분사료구, 순차적으로 담수로 옮긴 염분사료구 및 빠르게 담수로 옮긴 비염분사료구에서 차이를 보이지 않았다. 체액의 K/$^+$ 농도는 실험 종료시 해수사육구가 다른 실험구에 비교해 높은 수준을 나타냈다.

  • 고압의 불활성 기체를 이용하여 엔진에 추진제를 공급하는 액체로켓의 경우, 추진제 탱크의 압력은 정상연소상태의 연소압을 기준으로 하여 설계한다. 그러나 연소초기의 연소실 압력은 대기압 상태이므로 과도한 유량이 공급되어 이로 인해 hard-start가 발생하며, 최악의 경우 엔진의 파손을 가져온다. 본 연구에서는 이러한 문제를 해결하고 안정된 연소를 위하여 개선된 추진제 공급시스템을 제안하며, 이는 실제 연소실험을 통해 그 성능을 규명 하였다. 이 공습시스템은 연소 초기 및 연소 중의 일정한 유량공급을 위해 Cavitating Venturi를 사용하는 시스템이다. Cavitating Venturi는 오직 공급압력에 의해서만 유량이 결정되며, 출구압력에 영향을 받지 않으므로 연소 초기는 물론이고, 연소 중 이상 연소에 의해 연소압이 떨어져도 설계치 이상의 유량이 공급되지 않는다. 본 실험을 통해서 Cavitating Venturi의 설계 영역에서의 유량에 대한 안정성이 입증되었기 때문에, Cavitating Venturi는 액체로켓 이외의 압력강하량 변화가 큰 시스템에서 매우 효과적일 것이다.

Evaluation of Megasphaera elsdenii supplementation on rumen fermentation, production performance, carcass traits and health of ruminants: a meta-analysis

  • Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the use of Megasphaera elsdenii (M. elsdenii) as a probiotic on rumen fermentation, production performance, carcass traits and health of ruminants by integrating data from various related studies using meta-analysis. Methods: A total of 32 studies (consisted of 136 data points) were obtained and integrated into a database. The parameters integrated were fermentation products, rumen microbes, production performance, carcass quality, animal health, blood and urine metabolites. Statistical analysis of the compiled database used a mixed model methodology. Different studies were considered random effects, while M. elsdenii supplementation doses were considered fixed effects. p-values and the Akaike information criterion were employed as model statistics. The model was deemed significant at p<0.05 or had a tendency to be significant when p-value between 0.05<p<0.10. Results: Supplementation with M. elsdenii increased (p<0.05) some proportion of fermented rumen products such as propionate, butyrate, isobutyrate, and valerate, and significantly reduced (p<0.05) lactic acid concentration, acetate proportion, total bacterial population and methane emission. Furthermore, the probiotic supplementation enhanced (p<0.05) livestock production performance, especially in the average daily gain and body condition score. Regarding the carcass quality, hot carcass weight and carcass gain were elevated (p< 0.05) due to the M. elsdenii supplementation. Animal health also showed improvement as indicated by the lower (p<0.05) diarrhoea and bloat incidences as well as the liver abscess. However, M. elsdenii supplementation had negligible effects on blood and urine metabolites of ruminants. Conclusion: Supplementation of M. elsdenii is capable of decreasing ruminal lactic acid concentration, enhancing rumen health, elevating some favourable rumen fermentation products, and in turn, increasing production performance of ruminants.

우사의 향방에 따른 사육장 바닥면의 조건이 비육말기 거세한우의 생산성에 미치는 영향 (Effect of Pen Floor Condition Depending upon Housing Orientation on the PerFormance of Finishing Hanwoo Steers)

  • 본 연구는 우사의 향방에 의한 사육장 바닥면의 조건이 육우의 생산성에 미치는 영향을 구명할 목적으로 체중 570kg 내외의 거세한우 16두를 남, 북향 톱밥 자리깃 사육장에 각 8두씩 임의배치하고, 16주일간 사양시험을 실시한 후 증체율, 사료효율 및 도축성적을 분석하였던 바 그 결과는 다음과 같다. 투광성이 양호한 남향 사육장의 바닥면은 시험기간 중 표면의 건조 상태가 좋았으나 햇볕의 효과가 적은 북향 사육장은 결빙기 이전까지 다습하고 불규칙한 표면 상태를 나타내다가 결빙기에는 표면이 심하게 돌출 된 상태로 결빙되어 비육우의 휴식과 거동에 지장을 주었다. 남향 사육장과 북향 사육장에 수용된 거세우의 두당 일 평균 사료섭취량은 각각 10.39kg 및 10.32kg으로서 유의차가 없었으나 일당증체량은 각각 0.75kg과 0.64kg으로 나타나 표면 상태가 불량한 북향사육장이 14.3% 적었으며(p<0.05), 사료요구율은 각각 13.91 및 16.12로서 15.9%가 증가하였다(p<0.05). 또한 증체당 TDN 섭취량(TDN/gain)은 각각 11.47 및 13.25로 나타나 사료이용효율은 15.5%가량 저하되었다. 한편, 남쪽과 북쪽 사육장에서 사육된 거세우간의 출하체중, 도체중량, 도체율, 육량등급 및 육질의 통계적 차이는 나타나지 않았다. 결론적으로, 사육장의 위치로 인하여 바닥표면의 상태가 불량한 조건의 깔짚 축적식 우사에서 비육말기 거세우를 사육할 경우, 활동에너지 소비량의 증가와 휴식 시 접촉면을 통한 전도열의 손실요인이 발생하여 증체율 및 사료효율이 크게 저하될 수 있다는 점이 본 연구를 통해 밝혀졌다. 이러한 결과는 육우사육에서 축사의 방향 및 지붕자재 선정의 중요성을 시사한다.

엔드밀 가공시 진동, 표면거칠기, 절삭온도에 미치는 최적가공조건에 관한 연구 (The Study on the Optimal Working Condition for Vibration, Surface Roughness and Cutting Temperature in End-milling)

  • End-milling has been used widely in industrial system because it is effective to a material manufacturing with various shapes. Recently the end-milling processing is needed the high-precise technique with good surface roughness and rapid time in precision machine part and electronic part. The optimum mechanical vibration of main spindle, surface roughness and cutting temperature have an effect on end-milling condition such as, cutting direction, revolution of spindle, feed rate and depth of cut, etc. Therefore, this study carried to decide the working condition for optimum mechanical vibration of main spindle, surface roughness and cutting temperature using design of experiments, ANOVA and characteristic function. From the results of experimentation, mechanical vibration has an effect on revolution of spindle, radial depth of cut, and axial depth of cut. The surface roughness has an effect on cutting direction, revolution of spindle and depth of cut. And then the optimum condition used design of experiments is upward cutting In cutting direction, 600 rpm in revolution of spindle, 240 mm/min in feed rate, 2 mm in axial depth of cut and 0.25 mm in radial depth of cut. By design of experiments and characteristic function, it is effectively represented shape characteristics of mechanical vibration, surface roughness and cutting temperature in end-milling.

두 탑 PSA공정의 상세 동적모사 및 초기운전조건 결정 (Rigorous dynamic simulation and determination of initial operating conditions for two-bed PSA processes)

  • A rigorous dynamic simulation was performed in binary gas mixture H$_{2}$/CO (70:30 vol.%) to determinate start-up operating conditions of PSA(Pressure Swing Adsorption) processes. The rigorous dynamic model for the PSA process contains an Ergun equation for expressing the pressure drop in a bed, and valve equations to compute the boundary pressure change of the bed. As the result of the continuous dynamic simulation of 100 operating cyles in various initial conditions, the unsteady-state appeared in the early period and the cyclic steady-state came out about 20th cycle in feed condition and vaccum condition, and 30th cycle in pure H$_{2}$ condition. As time goes by valve equations made change the pressure at each end of the bed in ressurization, countercurrunt-depressurization and pressure equalization steps. The H$_{2}$ purity and the recovery is 99.99% and 86.73% respectively, which is slightly higher than the experimental data. Main contributiion of this study includes supplying fundamental technologies of handling combined variables PSA processes by developing rigorous models.

6.6 kV 전동기 고정자 권선의 절연진단과 절연내력 평가 (Estimation of Insulation Diagnosis and Dielectric Strength in 6.6 kV Motor Stator Windings)

  • To assess the deterioration condition of stator insulation, diagnostic and AC dielectric strength tests were performed on five high voltage (HV) motors (2,000 HP, 6.6 kV) for boiler feed-water pump (BFP). Two HV motors for BFP were installed per unit. Following the long term rewinding program, the diagnostic test was performed on five 6.6 kV motors during the planning maintenance period. After completing diagnostic test, AC dielectric strength test was done on the stator windings of HV motors. The AC dielectric strength test was conducted at 15 kV for one minute. Dielectric strength test and diagnostics test results confirmed that the stator insulation was judged to be in serviceable condition in the five 6.6 kV motors.

Relevance of Light Spectra to Growth of the Rearing Tiger Puffer Takifugu rubripes

  • In fish, light (photoperiod, intensity and spectra) is main regulator in many physiological actions including growth. We investigate the effect of light spectra on the somatic growth and growth-related gene expression in the rearing tiger puffer. Fish was reared under different light spectra (blue, green and red) for 8 weeks. Fish body weight and total length were promoted when reared under green light condition than red light condition. Expression of somatostatins (ss1 and ss2) in brain were showed higher expression under red light condition than green light condition. The ss3 mRNA was observed only higher expression in blue light condition. Expression of growth hormone (gh) in pituitary was detected no different levels between experimental groups. However, the fish of green light condition group was showed more high weight gain and feed efficiency than other light condition groups. Our present results suggest that somatic growth of tiger puffer is induced under green light condition because of inhibiting ss mRNA expression in brain by effect of green wavelength.
