  • In this paper, we propose a content-based audio genre classification algorithm that automatically classifies the query audio into five genres such as Classic, Hiphop, Jazz, Rock, Speech using digital signal processing approach. From the 20 second query audio file, 54 dimensional feature vectors, including Spectral Centroid, Rolloff, Flux, LPC, MFCC, is extracted from each query audio. For the classification algorithm, k-NN, Gaussian, GMM classifier is used. In order to choose optimum features from the 54 dimension feature vectors, SFS (Sequential Forward Selection) method is applied to draw 10 dimension optimum features and these are used for the genre classification algorithm. From the experimental result, we verify the superior performance of the SFS method that provides near $90{\%}$ success rate for the genre classification which means $10{\%}$-$20{\%}$ improvements over the previous methods

  • In document classification, target of analysis is not document itself but words appeared in the document. Word information, therefore, is a significant factor in document classification. In this study, we are dealing with the classification of Korean document based on words and feature vectors. First, we present the performance of document classification using nouns and keywords. Second, we compare to the results for the size of feature vectors.

  • This research proposes a new neural network for text categorization which uses alternative representations of documents to numerical vectors. Since the proposed neural network is intended originally only for text categorization, it is called NTC (Neural Text Categorizer) in this research. Numerical vectors representing documents for tasks of text mining have inherently two main problems: huge dimensionality and sparse distribution. Although many various feature selection methods are developed to address the first problem, the reduced dimension remains still large. If the dimension is reduced excessively by a feature selection method, robustness of text categorization is degraded. Even if SVM (Support Vector Machine) is tolerable to huge dimensionality, it is not so to the second problem. The goal of this research is to address the two problems at same time by proposing a new representation of documents and a new neural network using the representation for its input vector.

  • Target/Nontarget classification can be divided into the study of shape estimation of the target analysing reflected echo signal and of type classification of the target using acoustical features. In active sonar system, the feature vectors are extracted from the signal reflected from the target, and an classification algorithm is applied to determine whether the received signal is a target or not. However, received sonar signals can be distorted in the underwater environments, and the spatio-temporal characteristics of active sonar signals change according to the aspect of the target. In addition, it is very difficult to collect real sea-trial data for research. In this paper, target/non-target classification were performed using real sea-trial data. Feature vectors are extracted using MFCC(Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficients), filterbank energy in the Fourier spectrum and wavelet domain. For the performance verification, classification experiments were performed using backpropagation neural network classifiers.

  • Clustering methods essentially take a two-step approach; extracting feature vectors for dimensionality reduction and then employing clustering algorithm on the extracted feature vectors. However, for clustering images, the traditional clustering methods such as stacked auto-encoder based k-means are not effective since they tend to ignore the local information. In this paper, we propose a method first to effectively reduce data dimensionality using convolutional auto-encoder to capture and reflect the local information and then to accurately cluster similar data samples by using a hierarchical clustering approach. The experimental results confirm that the clustering results are improved by using the proposed model in terms of clustering accuracy and normalized mutual information.

  • In this paper, we propose a new approach for content-based video retrieval using non-parametric based motion classification in the shot-based video indexing structure. Our system proposed in this paper has supported the real-time video retrieval using spatio-temporal feature comparison by measuring the similarity between visual features and between motion features, respectively, after extracting representative frame and non-parametric motion information from shot-based video clips segmented by scene change detection method. The extraction of non-parametric based motion features, after the normalized motion vectors are created from an MPEG-compressed stream, is effectively fulfilled by discretizing each normalized motion vector into various angle bins, and by considering the mean, variance, and direction of motion vectors in these bins. To obtain visual feature in representative frame, we use the edge-based spatial descriptor. Experimental results show that our approach is superior to conventional methods with regard to the performance for video indexing and retrieval.

  • There are great needs for checking machine operation status precisely in the iron and steel plants. Rotating machines such as pumps, compressors, and motors are the most important objects in the plant maintenance. In this paper back-propagation neural network is utilized in diagnosing rotating machines. Like the finger print or the voice print of human, the abnormal vibrations due to axis misalignment, shaft bending, rotor unbalance, bolt loosening, and faults in gear and bearing have their own spectra. Like the pattern recognition technique, characteristic. feature vectors are obtained from the power spectra of vibration signals. Then we apply the characteristic feature vectors to a back propagation neural net for the weight training and pattern recognition.

  • This paper presents a reference template design method for frame-based classification of underwater transient signals. In the proposed method, framebased feature vectors of each reference signal are clustered by using LBG clustering algorithm to reduce the number of feature vectors in each class. Experimental results have shown that drastic reduction of the reference database can be achieved while maintaining the classification performance with LBG clustering algorithm.

  • This paper suggests a method to improve the performance of the pathological/normal voice classification. The effectiveness of the mel frequency-based filter bank energies using the fisher discriminant ratio (FDR) is analyzed. And mel frequency cepstrum coefficients (MFCCs) and the feature vectors through the linear discriminant analysis (LDA) transformation of the filter bank energies (FBE) are implemented. This paper shows that the FBE LDA-based GMM is more distinct method for the pathological/normal voice classification than the MFCC-based GMM.

  • This paper deals with the subsequence searching problem under time-warping. Our work is motivated by the observation that subsequence searches slow down quadratically as the average length of data sequences increases. To resolve this problem, the Segment-Based Approach for Subsequence Searches (SBASS) is proposed. The SBASS divides data and query sequences into a series of segments, and retrieves all data subsequences. Our segmentation scheme allows segments to have different lengths; thus we employ the time warping distance as a similarity measure for each segment pair. For efficient retrieval of similar subsequences, we extract feature vectors from all data segments exploiting their monotonically changing properties, and build a spatial index using feature vectors. The effectiveness of our approach is verified through extensive experiments.
