Feature selection has been widely established as an efficient technique for microarray data analysis. Feature selection aims to search for the most important feature/gene subset of a given dataset according to its relevance to the current target. Unsupervised feature selection is considered to be challenging due to the lack of label information. In this paper, we propose a novel method for unsupervised feature selection, which incorporates embedded learning and $l_{2,1}-norm$ sparse regression into a framework to select genes in microarray data analysis. Local tangent space alignment is applied during embedded learning to preserve the local data structure. The $l_{2,1}-norm$ sparse regression acts as a constraint to aid in learning the gene weights correlatively, by which the proposed method optimizes for selecting the informative genes which better capture the interesting natural classes of samples. We provide an effective algorithm to solve the optimization problem in our method. Finally, to validate the efficacy of the proposed method, we evaluate the proposed method on real microarray gene expression datasets. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method obtains quite promising performance.

In this paper, we propose new speech feature parameter using the Matrix Factorization for appearance part-based features of speech spectrum. The proposed parameter represents effective dimensional reduced data from multi-dimensional feature data through matrix factorization procedure under all of the matrix elements are the non-negative constraint. Reduced feature data presents p art-based features of input data. We verify about usefulness of NMF(Non-Negative Matrix Factorization) algorithm for speech feature extraction applying feature parameter that is got using NMF in Mel-scaled filter bank output. According to recognition experiment results, we confirm that proposed feature parameter is superior to MFCC(Mel-Frequency Cepstral Coefficient) in recognition performance that is used generally.

Cyber attacks are evolving commensurate with recent developments in information security technology. Intrusion detection systems collect various types of data from computers and networks to detect security threats and analyze the attack information. The large amount of data examined make the large number of computations and low detection rates problematic. Feature selection is expected to improve the classification performance and provide faster and more cost-effective results. Despite the various feature selection studies conducted for intrusion detection systems, it is difficult to automate feature selection because it is based on the knowledge of security experts. This paper proposes a feature selection technique to overcome the performance problems of intrusion detection systems. Focusing on feature selection, the first phase of the proposed system aims at constructing a feature subset using a sequential forward floating search (SFFS) to downsize the dimension of the variables. The second phase constructs a classification model with the selected feature subset using a random forest classifier (RFC) and evaluates the classification accuracy. Experiments were conducted with the NSL-KDD dataset using SFFS-RF, and the results indicated that feature selection techniques are a necessary preprocessing step to improve the overall system performance in systems that handle large datasets. They also verified that SFFS-RF could be used for data classification. In conclusion, SFFS-RF could be the key to improving the classification model performance in machine learning.

In this paper, we present a performance evaluation for face recognition algorithm using feature feedback according to the Feature mask. In the face recognition method using feature feedback, important region is extracted from original data set by using the reverse mapping from the extracted features to the original space. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of feature feedback according to shape of Feature Mask for Yale data. Comparing the result using Important part and unimportant part, we show the validity and applicability of the pattern recognition method based on feature feedback.
Feature selection or variable selection is a data mining scheme for selecting highly relevant features with target concept from high dimensional data. It decreases dimensionality of data, and makes it easy to analyze clusters or classification. A feature selection scheme requires an evaluation function. Most of current evaluation functions are based on statistics or information theory, and they can evaluate only for single feature (one-dimensional data). However, features have interactions between them, and require evaluation function for multi-dimensional data for efficient feature selection. In this study, we propose modification of FSDD evaluation function for utilizing evaluation of multiple features using extended distance function. Original FSDD is just possible for single feature evaluation. Proposed approach may be expected to be applied on other single feature evaluation method.
In this paper, the purpose is evaluation of the effect of using fractal feature in machine learning based pancreatic tumor classification. We used the data that Pancreas CT series 469 case including 1995 slice of benign and 1772 slice of malignant. Feature selection is implemented from 109 feature to 7 feature by Lasso regularization. In Fractal feature, fractal dimension is obtained by box-counting method, and hurst coefficient is calculated range data of pixel value in ROI. As a result, there were significant differences in both benign and malignancies tumor. Additionally, we compared the classification performance between model without fractal feature and model with fractal feature by using support vector machine. The train model with fractal feature showed statistically significant performance in comparison with train model without fractal feature.

In this paper, we propose a gas classification method using combined features for an electronic nose system that performs well even when some loss occurs in measuring data samples. We first divide the entire measurement for a data sample into three local sections, which are the stabilization, exposure, and purge; local features are then extracted from each section. Based on the discrimination analysis, measurements of the discriminative information amounts are taken. Subsequently, the local features that have a large amount of discriminative information are chosen to compose the combined features together with the global features that extracted from the entire measurement section of the data sample. The experimental results show that the combined features by the proposed method gives better classification performance for a variety of volatile organic compound data than the other feature types, especially when there is data loss.
In this paper, we propose an optimal feature extraction method for normally distributed multiclass data. We search the whole feature space to find a set of features that give the smallest classification error for the Gaussian ML classifier. Initially, we start with an arbitrary feature vector. Assuming that the feature vector is used for classification, we compute the classification error. Then we move the feature vector slightly and compute the classification error with this vector. Finally we update the feature vector such that the classification error decreases most rapidly. This procedure is done by taking gradient. Alternatively, the initial vector can be those found by conventional feature extraction algorithms. We propose two search methods, sequential search and global search. Experiment results show that the proposed method compares favorably with the conventional feature extraction methods.
Analyzing patterns in data points embedded in linear and non-linear feature spaces is considered as one of the common research problems among different research areas, for example: data mining, machine learning, pattern recognition, and multivariate analysis. In this paper, data points are heterogeneous sets of biosequences (composite data points). A composite data point is a set of ordinary data points (e.g., set of feature vectors). We theoretically extend the derivation of the largest generalized eigenvalue-based distance metric Dij(γ1) in any linear and non-linear feature spaces. We prove that Dij(γ1) is a metric under any linear and non-linear feature transformation function. We show the sufficiency and efficiency of using the decision rule $\bar{{\delta}}_{{\Xi}i}$(i.e., mean of Dij(γ1)) in classification of heterogeneous sets of biosequences compared with the decision rules min𝚵iand median𝚵i. We analyze the impact of linear and non-linear transformation functions on classifying/clustering collections of heterogeneous sets of biosequences. The impact of the length of a sequence in a heterogeneous sequence-set generated by simulation on the classification and clustering results in linear and non-linear feature spaces is empirically shown in this paper. We propose a new concept: the limiting dispersion map of the existing clusters in heterogeneous sets of biosequences embedded in linear and nonlinear feature spaces, which is based on the limiting distribution of nucleotide compositions estimated from real data sets. Finally, the empirical conclusions and the scientific evidences are deduced from the experiments to support the theoretical side stated in this paper.

This paper proposes an optimized classifier based on feature elimination (OCFE) for gene selection with combining two feature elimination methods, ReliefF and SVM-RFE. ReliefF algorithm is filter feature selection which rank the data by the importance of the data. SVM-RFE algorithm is a wrapper feature selection which wrapped the data and rank the data based on the weight of feature. With combining these two methods we get less error rate average, 0.3016138 for OCFE and 0.3096779 for SVM-RFE. The proposed method also get better accuracy with 70% for OCFE and 69% for SVM-RFE.
