Genotype Frequencies of the Sex-Linked Feathering and Their Phenotypes in Domestic Chicken Breeds for the Establishment of Auto-Sexing Strains (자가성감별 계통 조성을 위한 국내 토종 닭의 깃털 조만성 양상과 유전자형 빈도)

  • The method of sexing based on differences in the rate of feather growth provides a convenient and inexpensive approach. The locus of feather development gene (K) is located on the Z chromosome and can be utilized to produce phenotypes that distinguish between the sexes of chicks at hatching. To establish the auto-sexing native chicken strains, this study analyzed the genotype frequency of the feathering in domestic chicken breeds. The method of classification of slow- and rapid-feathering chickens was also investigated. In the slow-feathering chicks, the coverts were either the same length or longer than the primary wing feathers at hatching. However, the rapid-feathering chicks had the primary wing feathers that were longer than the coverts. The growth pattern of tail feather also distinctively differed between the rapid- and slow-feathering chicks after 5-days. The accuracy of wing feather sexing was about 98% compared with tail sexing. In domestic chicken breeds, Korean Black Cornish, Korean Rhode Island Red, and Korean Native Chicken-Red had both dominant (K) and recessive ($k^+$) feathering genes. The other breeds of chickens, Korean Brown Cornish, Ogol, White Leghorn, Korean Native Chicken-Yellow, -Gray, -White and -Black had only the recessive feathering gene ($k^+$). Consequently, feather sexing is available using the domestic chicken breeds. Establishing the maternal stock with dominant gene (K-) and paternal stock with recessive gene ($k^+k^+$), the slow-feathering characteristic is passed from mothers to their sons, and the rapid-feathering characteristic is inherited by daughters from their fathers.

  • The Miaos who is the minority people mainly living in the southwestern part of China, expressed their indicator and solidarity through the costume in order to maintain their racial character while experiencing numerous adversities over thousands of years, where the costume has served as a source of cohesion as well as a primitive religious thought, and also showed their faith, desire, longing and aspiration. This study examined the Miao's traditional costume by classifying it into the following; hair style, headdress, upper and lower garments, and other costume. And the silver ornaments used for attire and their symbolic meaning were examined. The result of the study is summarized as follows. 1. The reason that types of the costume has been diversified is because there was promise of ancestors who intended to differently express the type of a kind as symbol of the racial branch that is the Miao's special type of society. Thus, the costume type could tell where a tribe live. Another reason is because only marriage between families with different surname but the same type of costume was accepted. 2. As women made and wore the costume themselves, it also served as a means of being proud of their skill or wealth, they tried to make it more beautiful and it was also used as a token of marriage or love between relatively enlightened men and women. 3. The design used on the costume was expressed as a symbolic meaning of indicator to strengthen the racial solidarity because it connoted worship to ancestors who had experienced lots of adversities. 4. The hair style was expressed in various styles by using Kache such as Chukye, Byunbal and Kokye. It is likely that ornaments used on the head of women in the form of cow's horn or silver crown were used as one of the methods to stress the valuableness of the cattle that were essential to agricultural life. In addition, various styles of turbans were used to indicate the respective regions. 5. Cock's feather ornaments or silver ornaments in the form of pheasant's feather on the edge of women's skirts, peasant's feathers that men wore on their head, or Baekjoui and men wore resulted from the Miaos' thought of adoration for birds, which implied a primitive religious meaning. 6. As the region where the Miaos live yields much silver, the silver ornaments were mostly used to be proud of wealth, which symbolized light and pureness.

Multiculturism is the movement that began to arise in the academic world of America and the literary world form the close of 1980's in accepting the variety of culture and regarding the culture with the more balanced and wide view and just as it is, it means the attitude of accepting one or more cultures of variely and the position of taking interest in the culture of minority race not the culture of a governing race. It is the fashion of feminism adapts dualism like unisex, androgynous look, etc of bisexual lendency in the 1980's, it shows new style with crossover of liberal sense because there is not the difference of sex in fashion. The eco-feminism pursues the natural sexuality not being instrumental and dismantling and expressed it in the Gender expression of an integrated human being. The trend of ethnic fashion in the close of 20th century is that the element of hippie is working so strongly. By adding embroidery of Oriental style, accessories of Indian style, feathers, beads, a hempen hood to the ethnic costumes of Asia and Latin, is shows the figure of ethnic hippie. As the cycler fashion is the future clothes through technology of computer, it uses a cool glass material bringing up the image of a spacesuit in order to expresses cyber image through artificial color combination of sheen colors, Though this techno-color fashion has established the fresh stimulation and the innovative aspect with ultramodern materials and image of futurism, it transmits a hope of estranged people and the natural elements. Hybride means a cross and mixture of animal and plant in Korean and is also called fusion. The phenomenon of hybrid predicts to comes the period of a cross and variation because something completely new comes into the world by contamination, mixture and compromise through meeting something different each other and it has on advantage of developing something existing to one more stage. It is prospected that in the society of 21st century, the borderline of traditional gender will be disappeared, variety and individuality will determine the individual behavior, and the masculine value will be substituted by feminine value. In the society giving priority to feminine value, a fashion stuck closely to women is what must reflect lives of woman under the proposition of woman's beauty, being on original function. So, it is considered that a fashion with added convenience and practicality having the function which is easy to put on, comfortable to act, able to express solves so much, and able to show various appearances according to T.P.O will get into the spotlight.

TAR and M-TAR Error Correction Models for Asymmetric Gasoline Price in Korea (TAR와 M-TAR 오차수정모형을 이용한 국내 휘발유가격의 비대칭성 분석)

  • This paper investigates the presence of long-run and short-run price asymmetries in weekly gasoline prices from January 1997 to July 2008. In accordance with distribution channels, wholesale and retail stages are analyzed separately. An approach based on TAR and M-TAR cointegration tests, which entail matching asymmetric ECMs, is employed. For wholesale prices, asymmetries in the links with crude oil prices and exchange rates are found for both ECMs in the long-run and short-run. Exchange rates appear to play more significant role than crude oil prices in explaining the short-run price asymmetry. The rise in crude oil prices or exchange rates has statistically significant major impact on the increase of wholesale prices on the second week, not immediately as expected in the concept of 'rockets and feathers'. And asymmetrically, the fall does not have any statistically significant effect on the same period. The finding seems to be somewhat unusual. However, for retail prices, asymmetry m connection with wholesale prices is only revealed in the long-run. A symmetric price adjustment can be assumed in the short-run. Contrary to the long-run asymmetry found in the wholesale stage, in the retail stage, the speed of adjustment for negative deviations toward long-run equilibrium is faster than for positive ones, which is a phenomenon not favorable to consumers.

Manufacturing Techniques and the Conservation Treatment of Chimi - (Ridge-end tile) Excavated from the Beopcheonsa Temple Site, Wonju - (원주 법천사지 토제 치미의 제작기법과 보존처리)

  • This investion studies the manufacturing techniques of chimi(ridge-end roof tiles based on the) fragments excavated from the Wonju Beopcheonsa temple site(Historic site No. 466) and aids in the conservation of the fragments. The results of the investigation are categorized into the production of the body parts, the wing and the feather attachment, the production of the decorative parts, the scratches in the upper and lower part, the perforations connecting the upper and lower parts, and the formative features(bending phenomenon). The procedures in the conservation treatment of the chimi was performed in a sequential order beginning with a preliminary examination, followed by the removal of foreign substances, coating, joining and restoration, and color retouching. A three-dimensional scanning data was employed to restore the missing parts after adhesion to determine the location, size, and angle of the original shape. The restored chimi measures 118 cm in height and weighs 121 kg, which makes it the fifth largest in size among any chimi(including restored) in Korea. We expect that the pointed feathers will make the chimi from the Beopcheonsa temple site a rare reference as no specimens with these features have been found in Korea until now.

Effect of Singeing Time on Physico-Chemical Characteristics of Duck Meat (오리육의 화염 처리 수준에 따른 이화학적 특성)

  • Singeing has always been equated with meat color alteration through lipid oxidation and microbial population. Singeing method has always been employed far removing duck feathers, however, the effect of singeing on storage characteristic of duck meat has not been investigated extensively. The study was therefore, designed to Investigate the effect of singeing on duck meat during storage extensively. For the purpose, study was categorized into three groups namely A, B, and C, representing 0, 50 and 70 seconds of singeing time. Singeing was performed on 100 birds in each group, however, only 20 singed birds from each treatment groups were further selected to analyse them subsequently during storage. Analysis revealed that with 70 seconds singeing time drip loss was significantly (p<0.05) higher at $6mgf/cm^2$ compared to 50 seconds of singeing. With 70 seconds treatment breast meat apparently appeared black, where as with 50 seconds treatment no change was observed. Breast showed low redness with more duration of treatment compared to less treatment duration. Yellowness increased, springiness declined and no change was observed in cohesiveness and chewiness with high treatment time. There was increase in the TBARS and VBN, freshness did not change for first 5 days, however, K values started to increase later on indicated decline in freshness. Conclusively, it was inferred from the study that 50 seconds singeing does not make much alternation in the quantitative traits and at the same time maintains the microbial level under permissible limit.

Evolutionary Optimization of Neurocontroller for Physically Simulated Compliant-Wing Ornithopter

  • This paper presents a novel evolutionary framework for optimizing a bio-inspired fully dynamic neurocontroller for the maneuverable flapping flight of a simulated bird-sized ornithopter robot which takes advantage of the morphological computation and mechansensory feedback to improve flight stability. In order to cope with the difficulty of generating robust flapping flight and its maneuver, the wing of robot is modelled as a series of sub-plates joined by passive torsional springs, which implements the simplified version of feathers attached to the forearm skeleton. The neural controller is designed to have a bilaterally symmetric structure which consists of two fully connected neural network modules receiving mirrored sensory inputs from a series of flight navigation sensors as well as feather mechanosensors to let them participate in pattern generation. The synergy of wing compliance and its sensory reflexes gives a possibility that the robot can feel and exploit aerodynamic forces on its wings to potentially contribute to the agility and stability during flight. The evolved robot exhibited target-following flight maneuver using asymmetric wing movements as well as its tail, showing robustness to external aerodynamic disturbances.

A Study on the Costumes of the Terracotta Warriors at the Tomb of Qin Shi Huang (진시황릉(秦始皇陵) 출토(出土) 병용(兵俑)의 복식(服飾) 연구(硏究) -호복(胡服)과의 관련성을 중심으로-)

  • This study intends to find out the correspondence of the costumes of the terracotta warriors at the tomb of Qin Shi Huang to the dress of nomadic people. The Chinese took the dress of nomadic people into their costumes so that they might practise shooting arrows from horse back in the Age Of Wars. The terracotta warriors at the tomb of Qin Sin Huang provide us with substantial evidence that Qin Dynasty inherited the system of wearing the dress of nomadic people from Zhao. Figures of calvarys wear the jackets of nomadic people, but figures of other warriors wear Han jackets. This means that the aim of taking the dress of nomadic people is to be convenient in practising shooting arrows from horse back. Nomadic people adjusted their jackets to left, because they road on a horse from left for being the tunga only on the left. But calvarys adjusted their jackets to right. In those days, China didn't have a tunga. So there was no necessity for riding from left. And Chinese were accustomed to adjusted their jackets to right. This is the reason why calvarys adjusted their jackets to right, though they wear the dress of nomadic people. Soldiers wear trousers. Some have puttee, some have their leg bounds. All the soldiers tightened their coats or jackets with belts which were inhereted from nomadic people. They wear either shoes or short boots. The figures are classified according to rank, espicially in their hats and armours. General wears a cap adorned with pheasant' feathers, officer wears an unadorned cap, and men are hatless or in turbans. Calvary's headgear looks like a p'ing-chin-tse which was correspondence to the headgear of nomadic people. Soldiers wear armours according to duty, and armours are differentiated by rank. From the state of terracotta warriors, I think that the warriors were made from BC 246 to BC 210 which is equal to the date of making the tomb of Qin Shi Huang. Then the date of making the terracotta warriors was between 60 and 100 years since the king Wu Ling of the state of Zhao took the dress of nomadic people.

A Case Study on Foraging Behavior of Oriental White Storks (Ciconia boyciana) in the Variation of Prey Density and Water Depth (먹이 밀도와 수심에 따른 황새(Ciconia boyciana)의 섭식 행동에 대한 사례연구)

  • The Oriental white stork (Ciconia boyciana) is an endangered species in Korea as well as in the world. In order to provide information on foraging habitats for releasing storks to the wild, we studied the foraging behavior of the species according to different food densities and water levels. We released two individuals, male and female, after enclosing a study site with a fence and cutting out a part of two or three primary feathers. Research was conducted from 20 June to 16 August 2008 at Whawon-ri, Mewon-myung, Chungcheongbuk-do, South Korea. We investigated habitat patch usage, foraging efficiency, and foraging methods of the feeding individuals in the different food densities and water levels. The storks invested more for foraging time and trials, and they captured more food in a habitat of high food density than others. The female invested more time and captured food most in a habitat of lowest water depth while the male in a habitat of middle water depth. However, foraging efficiency did not differ significantly among habitats of food density and water depth, and only differed between male and female by ways of foraging method. From this study we suggest that the storks select foraging habitats and foraging methods under different conditions of food density and water depth.

A Case Study of Foraging Time Budget and Habitat Selection of Oriental White Storks (Ciconia boyciana) in Natural State (자연상태에서 황새의 섭식 행동과 서식지 선택에 대한 사례연구)

  • As a step toward developing conservation and restoration plans for an endangered species of the Oriental White Stork (Ciconia boyciana), we studied daily foraging behavior and ecology. We released two individuals, male and female, after enclosing study site with a fence and cutting out a part of two or three feathers of primaries. Research was conducted from 16 June to 11 July, 2007 for 25 days at Whawonri, Mewonmyung, Chungbuk province. We investigated diural and daily variation of foraging time budget, diet composition, and habitat selection of the feeding individuals. The storks quadratically invested for foraging time and resting time according to time of day, but no significant variation in the foraging time and resting time appeared daily over 25 days. As a result, the storks mainly used wetland as a foraging site in the center of the study area to that in the edge as well as to other types of habitat. The high usage for wetland in the center did not change over the 25 days while Rice field decreased and Wetland in the edge and Pathway increased. Female invested more time for foraging than male, but the foraging efficiency did not differ between them. We discussed the significance of foraging behavior and habitat selection for management plan.
