A NOTE ON PROLATE SPHEROIDAL WAVE FUNCTIONS AND PROLATE FUNCTION BASED NUMERICAL INVERSION METHODS

  • Polynomials are one of most important and widely used numerical tools in dealing with a smooth function on a bounded domain and trigonometric functions work for smooth periodic functions. However, they are not the best choice if a function has a bounded support in space and in frequency domain. The Prolate Spheroidal wave function (PSWF) of order zero has been known as a best candidate as a basis for band-limited functions. In this paper, we review some basic properties of PSWFs defined as eigenfunctions of bounded Fourier transformation. We also propose numerical inversion schemes based on PSWF and present some numerical examples to show their feasibilities as signal processing tools.

Epithermal Neutron Flux Enhancement Using SMA in Designing a Cf-Based Neutron Beam for BNCT

  • Great interest has prompted Boron Neutron Capture Therapy (BNCT) as a new treatment for brain tumors. The use of $^{252}$Cf as a neutron source for BNn makes the in-hospital treatments of tumors to be possible. Newly proposed subcritical multiplying assemblies (SMA) are explored to improve relatively tow neutron fluxes of the source and construct the feasibilities of $^{252}$Cf as a neutron source. The MCNP code has been used to evaluate the effective multiplication factor of the entire system and the intensities and percentages of epithermal neutron flux at the patient-end surface of the system. The neutron beam using SMA shows the epithermal neutron flux enhancement of about 13 times as large as the beam without using SMA. It is expected that the neutron beam proposed in this research will be more effective for treatment of tumors due to the increased therapeutic neutron fluxes.

QFT의 루프형성법을 이용한 PID 제어기 설계 (A Design of PID Controller Using Loop Shaping Method of QFT)

  • QFT(Quantitative Feedback Theory) is a very practical design technique that emphasizes the use of feedback for achieving the desired system performance tolerances in despite of plant uncertainties and disturbances. The loop shaping procedure of the QFT method is employed to design the robust controller, until the desired bounds are satisfied. This paper presents a method to estimate the Pm parameters using the loop shaping of the QFT. The proposed method identifies the parameter vector of PID controller from a linear system that develops from rearranging the two dimensional input matrices and output vectors obtained from the QFT bounds. The feasibilities of the suggested algorithm are illustrated with an example.

  • For the accuracy correction of the micro-positioning industrial robot, micro-manipulator has been devised. The compliant mechanisms using piezoelectric actuators is necessary geometrically and structurally to be developed by the optimization approaches. The overall geometric advantage as the mechanical efficiencies of the mechanism are considered as objective functions, which respectively art the ratio of output displacement to input force, and their constraints are the vertical notion of supporting leg and the structural strength of manipulation. In optimizing the compliant mechanical amplifier, the sequential linear programming and an optimality criteria method are used for the geometrical dimensions of compliant bridges and flexure hinges. This paper presents the integrated design process which not only can maximize the mechanism feasibilities but also can ensure the positioning accuracy and sufficient workspace. Experiment and simulation are presented for validating the design process through the comparisons of the kinematical and structural performances.

  • Recently, we have seen a rapid advance in the evolving field of spin electronics (or spintronics). In spintronics, some feasibilities of new electronic applications utilizing spin degree of freedom have been explored. Diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMSs) are premising materials for spintronics because they have both charge and spin degree of freedom in a single substance. DMSs are refereed to semiconductor alloys in which some atoms are randomly substituted for by magnetic atoms. (omitted)

회귀분석에 의한 건물에너지 사용량 예측기법에 관한 연구 (A Study for Predicting Building Energy Use with Regression Analysis)

  • Predicting building energy use can be useful to evaluate its energy performance. This study proposed empirical approach for predicting building energy use with regression analysis. For the empirical analysis, simple regression models were developed based on the historical energy consumption data as a function of daily outside temperature, the predicting equations were derived for different operational modes and day types, then the equations were applied for predicting energy use in a building. BY selecting a real building as a case study, the feasibilities of the empirical approach for predicting building energy use were examined. The results showed that empirical approach with regression analysis was fairly reliable by demonstrating prediction accuracy of $pm10%$ compared with the actual energy consumption data. It was also verified that the prediction by regression models could be simple and fairly accurate. Thus, it is anticipated that the empirical approach will be useful and reliable tool for many purposes: retrofit savings analysis by estimating energy usage in an existing building or the diagnosis of the building operational problems with real time analysis.

  • Lipreading through visual processing techniques help provide some useful systems for the hearing impaired to learn communication assistance. This paper proposes a method to understand spoken words by using visual images taken by a camera with a video-digitizer. The image is processed to obtain the contours of lip, which is approximated into a hexagon. The pattern lists, consisting of lengths and angles of hexagon, are compared and computed to get the fuzzy similarity between two lists. By similarity matching, the mouth shape is recognized as the one which has the pronounced voice. Some experiments, exemplified by recognition of the Japanese vowels, are given to show feasibilities of this method.

  • This paper deals with analysis of material handling system efficiency of a heat-exchanger manufacturing line. This line is a typical flow shop type assembly line which consists of 10 steps of assembly stations. Each station have one or two workers who assemble and move components for the job, and no special transporters for component's movement. Therfore, all the workers are involoved in unnecessary moving activities which decrease overall production efficiencies of the line. To improve productivities, production outputs and worker's job performances for this assembly line, the several alternatives are considered such as installing new conveyor lines and automatic guided vehicle(AGV) system. Analyzing economic feasibilities and responses of the system alternatives, an experimental simulation model is built suing SIMAN Ver. 3. 5 simulation language with CINEMA package for animation of the process flow. Through this animation process a vivid picturial analysis could performed on the process flow.

Virtual Tangential Vector와 퍼지 제어를 이용한 준 3차원 경로계획 (Semi-3D Path Planning using Virtual Tangential Vector and Fuzzy Control)

  • In this paper, a hybrid semi-3D path planning algorithm combining Virtual Tangential Vector(VTV) and fuzzy control is proposed. 3D dynamic environmental factors are reflected to the 2D path planning model, VTV. As a result, the robot can control direction from 2D path planning algorithm VTV and speed as well depending on the fuzzy inputs such as the distance between the robot and obstacle, roughness and slope. Performances and feasibilities of the suggested method are demonstrated by using Matlab simulations. Simulation results show that fuzzy rules and obstacle avoidance methods are working properly toward virtual 3D environments. The proposed hybrid semi-3D path planning is expected to be well applicable to a real life environment, considering its simplicity and realistic nature of the dynamic factors included.

  • 본 논문에서는 쌍선형 시스템으로 표현되는 화력발전소 과열기에 대한 퍼지 제어기법을 제안한다. 증기온도를 제어하기 위하여 쌍선형 관측기로부터 얻어진 추정값과 기준값의 오차면적과 시간 변화율을 고려하여 입력변수를 구성하고, T. Takagi와 M. Sugeno의 퍼지모델을 기반으로 제어규칙을 추론하였다. 제안된 방법의 유용성은 컴퓨터 시뮬레이션 결과에 의해서 검증하였다.
