Electronic Structures of half-metallic phase of ternary Fe_2TX (T = 3d transition metal and X = Al, Si) (절반금속 Fe_2TX 화합물의 전자구조 연구 (T = 3d 전이금속; X = Al, Si))

  • Electronic structures of ordered Fe$_3X (X = Al, Si), and their derivative ternary alloys of Fe_2TX (T = 3d transition metal) have been investigated by using the linearized muffin-tin orbital (LMTO) band method. The role of the coupling between substituted transition metal and its neighbors is investigated by calculating the magnetic moments and local density of states (LDOS). It is shown that it is essential to include the coupling beyond nearest neighbors in obtaining the magnetic moment of Fe alloy. The preferential sites of T impurities in Fe_3X are determined from the total energy calculations. The derivative ternary alloys of Fe_2TX have characteristic electronic structures of semi-metal for Fe_2VAI and (nearly) half-metal for Fe_2TAI (T = Cr, Mn) and Fe_2TSi (T = V, Cr, Mn)

Study on the Surface Properties of Arc Ion Plated Ti-Al-Cr-N Thin Layers (아크 이온 증착된 Ti-Al-Cr-N 도포층의 표면 물성 연구)

  • Ti-Al-Cr-N thin layer was prepared on Fe-Si thin sheet by arc ion plating to improve corrosion and mechanical properties. The compositions ratios of Fe : Cr : Al : Ti : Si : N of the thin layers at $500^{\circ}C$ was 1.24 : 0.56 : 36.82 : 32.72 : 0.59 : 28.07 [wt.%], respectively. The higher arc ion plating temperature was, the higher corrosion resistance and nano-hardness were observed due to chromium content. Corrosion potential and corrosion rate in artificial sea water of the coating layer were in the range of $-39mV_{SHE}$ and $2mA/cm^2$, respectively. Passivity was not observed in the artificial sea water. Nano-hardnesses of the thin layers was increased by adding Cr from 23.6 to 25.8 [GPa]. The friction coefficients and fatigue limits of the layers were 0.388, 0.031, respectively.

Synthesis and Characterization of (Cr, Fe)-doped Y2O3-Al2O3 Red Pigments ((Cr, Fe)-doped Y2O3-Al2O3계 붉은 안료의 합성과 특성)

  • Perovskite codoped with chromium and iron have been studied. Samples with $YAl_{0.96}(Cr_{0.04-x}Fe_x)O_3$(x=0.01, 0.02, 0.03, 0.04) were prepared by solid state reaction at $1450^{\circ}C$ for 6 h and were characterized by XRD, FT-IR, Raman spectroscopy, SEM and UV-vis spectrophotometer. The color of the synthesized pigments were from red to dark brown(in bulk). Up to 0.02 mole $Fe_2O_3$ for substituting $Cr_2O_3$ development of color in lime-glaze gives good red color but as increasing amount of $Fe_2O_3$ and decreasing $Cr_2O_3$ proportionally produce from brownish red to brown. Increasing $Fe_2O_3$ amount lead to weaken crystal field relatively due to have smaller ionic radius than $Cr_2O_3$ ionic one. The UV-vis peaks were shifted to lower wavelength.

A Study on the Characteristics of Cast Bonding Aluminium Alloy and Fe-17wt%Cr Steel with Vacuum Die Casting (진공다이캐스트법에 의한 Al합금과 Fe-17wt%Cr 강의 주조접합 특성연구)

  • To overcome the undesirable deformation, peeling off and geometrical restrictions which were mainly caused by differences in thermal expansion coefficients during the cladding of aluminum strip and stainless strip, new processing method based on vacuum die casting is designed and implemented in fabricating Fe-17wt%Cr steel (stainless steel). To increase cast-bonding ability, the surface of Fe-17wt%Cr steel is electrochemical etched to have optimum pit size (above 0.2 mm) and pit density (above 30%). The implementation of vacuum die casting by using surface treated stainless steel (Fe-17wt%Cr Steel) produces good trial products having acceptable cast-bonding ability. The enabling conditions for cast-bonding are pouring temperature $690^{\circ}C$, filling speed 30 m/sec and casting pressure $800\;kg/cm^2$. The microscopic observation of cast-bonded Al/Fe-17wt%Cr steel does not show any evidence of intermetallic compounds. The bonding strength of trial products is $150-400\;kg/cm^2$ and this is stronger than conventionally cladded metal having $30-70\;kg/cm^2$.

  • Lattice structure, hydrogen absorption characteristics, discharge capacity and cycle life of $V_{22}Ti_{16}Zr_{16}Ni_{39}X_7$(X= Cr, Co, Fe, Mn, Al) alloys were investigated. The matrix phases of these alloys were the C14 Laves phase. Chromium-containing alloy had a vanadium-rich phase in addition to the Laves phase. The chromium, maganese, or aluminum-containing alloys had lower hydrogen equilibrium pressure and larger hydrogen absorption content than the cobalt or iron-containing alloys. The discharge capacities of these alloys were 270~330mAh/g. The discharge capacity according to the alloying element X decreased in the order of Mn>Cr>Co, Al)Fe. The charge/discharge cycle lives of the chromium, cobalt or iron-containing alloys were longer than those of maganese or aluminum-containing alloys due to the lower vanadium dissolution rate.
