  • The AISI 216L stainless steel with a composition of Fe-16Cr-6Ni-6Mn-1.7Mo (wt.%) was oxidized at $700{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ in air for 100 h. At $700^{\circ}C$, a thin $Mn_{1.5}Cr_{1.5}O_4$ oxide layer with a thickness of $0.4{\mu}m$ formed. At $800^{\circ}C$, an outer thin $Fe_2O_3$ oxide layer and a thick inner $FeCr_2O_4$ oxide layer with a total thickness of $30{\mu}m$ formed. The non-adherent scale formed at $800^{\circ}C$ was susceptible to cracking. At $900^{\circ}C$, an outer thin $Fe_2O_3$ oxide layer and a thick inner $Mn_{1.5}Cr_{1.5}O_4$ oxide layer formed, whose total thickness was $10{\sim}15{\mu}m$. The scales formed at $900^{\circ}C$ were non-adherent and susceptible to cracking. 216 L stainless steel oxidized faster than 316 L stainless steel, owing to the increment of the Mn content and the decrement of Ni content.

  • Brazing of Fe-Cr-Al alloy was carried out at $1200^{\circ}C$ in vacuum furnace using nickel-based filler metals : BNi-5 powder(Ni-Cr-Si-Fe base alloy} and MBF-50 foil (Ni-Cr-Si-B). The effect of boron content on the stability of oxide scale on the brazed joint was investigated by means of cyclic oxidation test performed at $1050^{\circ}C$ and $1200^{\circ}C$. Apparently, the joints brazed with MBF-50 containing boron showed relatively stable oxidation rates compared to boron-free BNi-5 at both temperatures. However, it was considered that the slower weight loss of MBF-50 brazed specimen wasn’t resulted from the low oxidation rate but from the spallation of oxide layer. The oxide layer consisted of thick spinel oxide on the surface and $Al_2 O_3$ internal oxide layer along the interface between mother alloy and braze, the mother alloy was also eroded seriously by the formation of spinel oxides such as $FeCr_2 O_4$ and $NiCr_2 O_4$ on the surface, likely to be induced by the change of oxide forming mechanism due to diffusion of boron from the braze. On the contrary, the joint brazed with BNi-5 showed the good oxidation resistance during the cyclic oxidation test. It seems that the oxidation can be retarded by the formation of stable $Al_2 O_3$ layer at the surface.

  • Plasma nitrocarburising and post oxidation were performed on SCM435 steel by a pulsed plasma ion nitriding system. Plasma oxidation resulted in the formation of a very thin ferritic oxide layer 1-2 $\mu\textrm{m}$ thick on top of a 15~25 $\mu\textrm{m}$ $\varepsilon$-F $e_{2-3}$(N,C) nitrocarburized compound layer. The growth rate of oxide layer increased with the treatment temperature and time. However, the oxide layer was easily spalled from the compound layer either for both oxidation temperatures above $450^{\circ}C$, or for oxidation time more than 2 hrs at oxidation temperature $400^{\circ}C$. It was confirmed that the relative amount of $Fe_2$$O_3$, compared with $e_3$$O_4$, increased rapidly with the oxidation temperature. The amounts of ${\gamma}$'-$Fe_4$(N,C) and $\theta$-$Fe_3$C, generated from dissociation from $\varepsilon$-$Fe_{2-3}$ /(N,C) phase during $O_2$ plasma sputtering, were also increased with the oxidation temperature.e.

  • In this study, the corrosion characteristics of T22 and T92 steel were investigated in 6O2 + 16CO2 + 2SO2 gas environment at 650 ℃. Corrosion characteristics were characterized by weight gain, oxide layer thickness, scanning electron microscope, optical microscope, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction. T22 and T92 steel tended to stagnate oxide layer growth over time. Oxidation kinetics were analyzed using the data of oxide layer thickness, and a regression model was presented. The regression model was significantly acceptable. The corrosion rate between the two steels through the regression model showed significant difference. The T92 steel was approximately twice as large as the time exponent and showed very good corrosion resistance compared to the T22 steel. In both steels, the oxide layer mainly formed a Fe-rich oxide layer composed of hematite (Fe2O3), magnetite (Fe3O4), and spinel (FeCr2O4). Sulfide segregation occurred in the oxide layer due to SO2 gas. However, the locations of segregation for the T22 and T92 steel were different.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of annealing conditions on physical and magnetic properties of Fe-Hf-N thin films. When the thin films were annealed in $N_2$ gas, a surface oxide layer, comprised of Fe$_2$O$_3$ and Fe$_3$O$_4$, was formed at the surface of the thin films and a Fe-Hf-O-N layer was also formed under this surface oxide layer. It was found that the thicknesses of the surface oxide layer and the Fe-Hf-O-N layer increased, as the annealing temperature increased. It was also found that if the thickness of the surface oxide layer was excluded in the property calculation, the soft magnetic properties of the annealed thin films were not much different from those of the as-deposited thin films. Therefore, it was suggested that the Fe-Hf-O-N layer formed under the surface oxide layer did not lose significantly the soft magnetic properties of the Fe-Hf-N films and the Fe-Hf-N films annealed in $N_2$gas showed the soft magnetic properties of the Fe-Hf-N and Fe-Hf-O-N multi-layers.

  • We report a positive exchange bias (HE) in thinmultilayered filmscontaining nano-oxide layer. The positive HE, obtained for our system results from an antiferromagnetic coupling between the ferromagnetic (FM) CoFe and the antiferromagnetic (AFM) CoO layers, which spontaneously form on top of the nano-oxide layer (NOL). The shift in the hysteresis loop along the direction of thecooling field and the change in the sign of exchange bias are evidence of antiferromagnetic interfacial exchange coupling between the CoO and CoFe layers. Our calculation indicates that uncompensated oxygen moments in the NOL results in antiferromagnetic interfacial exchange coupling between the CoO and CoFe layers. One of the interesting features observed with our system is that it displays the positive HE even above the bulk Neel temperature (TN) of CoO. Although the positive HEsystem has a different AFM/FM interfacial spin structure compare to that of the negative HE one, the results of the angular dependence measurements show that the magnetization reversal mechanism can be considered within the framework of the coherent rotation model.

  • To understand the effect of Fe on the oxidation behavior of TiAl alloys, TiAl-(2, 4, 6at% )Fe were oxidized at 800 and 90$0^{\circ}C$ in air. The oxidation resistance of TiAl-Fe alloys increased with increasing an iron content. The scales formed consisted of an outer $TiO_2$ layer, an intermediate $A1_2$$O_3$ layer, and an inner mixed ($TiO_2$+$A1_2$$O_3$) layer, being similar to other common TiAl alloys. But, the scales formed on TiAl-Fe alloys were generally thin compared to those formed on pure TiAl, and contained dissolved iron. Below the oxide scale, an oxygen affected zone was formed. This beneficial effects of Fe on increasing the oxidation resistance and scale adherence of TiAl alloys were attributed to the refinement of oxide grains, increased scale adherence and the enhanced alumina-forming tendency.

  • Plasma nitrocarburising and post oxidation were performed on SM45C steel using a plasma nitriding unit. Nitrocarburising was carried out with various methane gas compositions with 4 torr gas pressure at $570^{\circ}C$ for 3 hours and post oxidation was carried out with 100% oxygen gas atmosphere with 4 torr at different temperatures for various times. It was found that the compound layer produced by plasma nitrocarburising consisted of predominantly ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}(N,C)$ and a small proportion of ${\gamma}-Fe_4(N,C)$. With increasing methane content in the gas mixture, ${\varepsilon}$ phase compound layer was favoured. In addition, when the methane content was further increased, cementite was observed in the compound layer. The very thin oxide layer on top of the compound layer was obtained by post oxidation. The formation of Oxide phase was initially started from the magnetite($Fe_3O_4$) and with increasing oxidation time, the oxide phase was increased. With increasing oxidation temperature, oxide phase was increased. However the oxide layer was split from the compound layer at high temperature. Corrosion resistance was slightly influenced by oxidation times and temperatures.

  • In 50%$NH_3+Air+N_2$ atmospheres, the effect of air additions on the growth characteristics of the compound layer during oxynitriding at $570^{\circ}C$ for 2hr in carbon and alloy steels has been investigated. The ammount of apparent residual ammonia during oxynitriding has shown to be increased with air additions(9~36 Vol. %) and X-ray diffraction analysis of case oxynitreded has shown that the compound layer consist of ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}$(N, C) phase and ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4$(N,C) phase. In the case of carbon steels, the thickness of oxide layer, compound layer and porous layer and the amount of ${\varepsilon}-Fe_{2-3}$(N,C) phase in the compound layer were increased with additions of air in 50%$NH_3+N_2$ atmospheres. At the same gas composition, the thickenss of oxide layer, compound layer and porous layer in alloy steels showed slightly thin layer thickness compared to those of carbon steels and the ${\gamma}^{\prime}-Fe_4$(N,C) phase in the compound layer of alloy steels was found barely. Therefore, the most obvious effect of air addition in the gas nitriding atmosphere has been found to in crease further kinetics of nitriding reaction.

  • The tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) ratios of magnetic tunnel junctions (MTJs), in general, decrease abruptly above 250$^{\circ}C$ due to Mn interdiffusion from an antiferromagnet IrMn layer to a ferromagnetic CoFe and/or a tunnel barrier. To improve thermal stability, we prepared MTJs with nano-oxide layers. Using a MTJ structure consisting of underlayer CoNbZr 4/bufferlayer CoFe 10/antiferromaget IrMn 7.5/pinned layer CoFe 3/tunnel barrier AlO/freelayer CoFe 3/capping CoNbZr 2 (nm), we placed a nano-oxide layer (NOL) into the underlayer or bufferlayer. Then, the thermal, structural and magneto-electric properties were measured. The TMR ratio, surface flatness, and thermal stability of the MTJs with NOLs were promoted.
