  • The annealing-temperature dependence of magnetic properties in compressed powder cores being composed of ball-milled F $e_{73.5}$C $u_1$N $b_3$S $i_{15.5}$ $B_{7}$ alloy powders (size 250∼850${\mu}{\textrm}{m}$) and 5 wt% of ceramic insulators has been investigated. When annealed at 5$50^{\circ}C$ for 1 h and so transformed to $\alpha$-Fe phase nanocrystalline structure with the grain size of 11 nm (electrical resistivity : 110 $\mu$$.$cm), the highest effective permeability of 125 and quality factor of 53 were obtained, and the permeability persisted up to about 500 KHz. Further the core loss measured at the frequency of 50 KHz and the induction amplitude of 0.1 T was very low (230 mW/㎤). However the dc bias characteristics was not satisfactory as compared to that of conventional powder core materials(MPP, Sendust etc.). The inferior dc bias property of F $e_{73.5}$C $u_1$N $b_3$S $i_{15.5}$ $B_{7}$ alloy powder cores was attributed to the fact that the size of powder was too large for obtaining the same permeability with that of conventional materials.

  • Transverse magnetic field annealing (TFA) was carried out on $Fe_{73.5}Cu_1Nb_3Si_{15.5}B_7$ nano-crystalline magnetic core with the aim at decreasing coercivity ($H_c$) while keeping high inductance ($L_s$). The magnetic field generated by direct current (DC) was applied on the magnetic core during different selected annealing stages and it was proved that the nanocrystalline magnetic core achieved lowest $H_c$ when applying transverse field during the whole annealing process (TFA1). Although the microstructure and crystallization degree of the nanocrystalline magnetic core exhibited no obvious difference after TFA1 compared to no field annealing, the TFA1 sample showed a more uniform nanostructure with a smaller mean square deviation of grain size distribution. $H_c$ of the nanocrystalline magnetic core annealed under TFA1 decreased along with the increasing magnetic field. As a result, the certain size nanocrystalline magnetic core with low $H_c$ of 0.6 A/m, low core loss (W at 20 kHz) of 1.6 W/kg under flux density of 0.2 T and high $L_s$ of $13.8{\mu}H$ were obtained after TFA1 with the DC intensity of 140 A. The combination of high $L_s$ with excellent magnetic properties promised this nanocrystalline alloy an outstanding economical application in high frequency transformers.

  • Volcanic ash samples of historical eruptions from Mt. Baekdu were analyzed for major oxides, trace and rare earth elements by a variety of analytical techniques. The results indicate that the ashes consist of approximately 58.8~71.1 wt.% $SiO_2$, 9.6~16.8 wt.% $Al_2O_3$, 4.5~6.9 wt.% $Fe_2O_{3t}$, 0.1~1.7 wt.% MgO, 0.3~1.6 wt.% CaO, 5.2~6.3 wt.% $Na_2O$, 4.3~5.9 wt.% $K_2O$ and less than 1.2 wt.% $TiO_2$. Thirty two trace metals including Ba, Cu, Cr. Co, Ni, Sr, V, Zn, and Zr were analyzed. The ashes can be divided two groups: group A(1 ka Millennium pumice, 1668 and $190{\underline{3}}$ pumice) and group B(1702 pumice) according to the relative enrichment of HREEs. The abundances of heavy metals such as Cu, Co, Mn, and Zn were relatively low. As compared to the Sakurajima volcanic ash, Baekdusan volcanic ash has low concentrations of Y, Nb, Pb, U, Sc, V, Ni and Cu and high concentrations of Zr, Ba, Hf, Cr, Co, Zn and rare-earth (except Eu).

  • A thorough study about the influences of Mn substitution for Fe on the microstructure and magnetic characteristics of $Fe_{73.5-x}Mn-{x}Si_{13.5}B_{9}Nb_{3}Cu_1$ (x = 1, 3, 5) alloys prepared by the melt-spinning technique has been performed. Nanocomposites composed of nanoscale $(Fe,Mn)_{3}Si$ magnetic phase embedded in an amorphous matrix were obtained by annealing their amorphous alloys at $535^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour. The addition of Mn causes a slight increase in the mean grain size. The Curie temperatures of the initial amorphous phase and of the nanocrystals phase decreased, while the Curie temperature of the remaining amorphous phase remained nearly constant with increasing Mn content. Soft magnetic properties of the crystallized samples have been significantly improved by a proper thermal treatment. Accordingly, the giant magnetoimpedance effect is observed and ascribed to the increase of the magnetic permeability, and the decrease of the coercivity of the samples. The increased magnetic permeability is resulted from a decrease in the magnetocrystalline anisotropy and saturation magnetostriction.

  • Microstructure and soft magnetic properties of bulk amorphous and/or nanocrystalline $Fe_{73.5}Cu_1Nb_3Si_{13.5}B_9$ alloys prepared by consolidation at 5.5GPa were investigated. The relative density of the bulk sample 1 (from amorphous powders) was 98.5% and the grain sizes were about 10.6nm. While the relative density and grain sizes of bulk sample 2 (from nanocrystalline powders) are 98% and 20.1nm, respectively. Particularly, the bulk samples exhibited a good combined magnetic property: for Sample1, $M_s=125emu/g$ and $H_c=1.5Oe;$ for Sample2, $M_s=129emu/g$ and $H_c=3.3Oe$. The success of synthesizing the nanocrystalline Fe-based bulk alloys will be encouraging for the future development of bulk nanocrystalline soft magnetic alloys.

  • The electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption properties with a variation of crystallization annealing temperature have been investigated in a sheet-type absorber using the $Fe_{73}Si_{16}B_7Nb_3Cu_1$ alloy powder. With increasing the annealing temperature the complex permeability (${\mu}_r$), permittivity (${\varepsilon}_r$) and power absorption changed. The EM wave absorber shows the maximum permeability and permittivity after the annealing at $610^{\circ}C$ for 1 hour, and its calculated power absorption is above 80% of input power in the frequency range over 1.5 GHz.

  • Ribbon type nanocrystalline alloy cores have shown excellent soft magnetic properties in the high frequency range because of small crystalline anisotropy and nearly zero magnetostriction[1]. In present, however ribbon alloys gives some limit in applications such as a large inductor and reactors of PFC circuit, which are required good DC bias property and low loss in the high frequency. Powder alloys with ultra fine grain structure can be an important way to overcome this kind of disadvantage, and to improve the high frequency soft magnetic properties in conventional metallic powder cores[2]. • In this report, we demonstrate a comprehensive analysis of the effects of Au addition on the microstructure and magnetic properties of $Fe_{73.5}Si_{13.5}B_{9}Nb_{3}Au_1$ Finemet-type alloy. It was found that the as-quenched alloys were the amorphous state and turned into nanocrystalline state under heat treatments. The DSC analysis indicates that the sharply exothermal peak corresponding to the crystallization of the $\alpha-Fe(Si)$ was observed at $547-579^{\circ}C$ depending on the heating rates, which is little higher than that of original Finemet (542-$570{^{\circ}C}$, respectively). Besides, the thermomagnetic result confirmed that the full substitution of Cu by Au with the single phase structure in the M(T) curve along cooling cycle. Ultrasoft magnetic properties of the nanocrystallized samples were significantly enhanced by the proper annealing such as the increase of permeability and the decrease of the coercivity. The optimum annealing condition was found at the annealing temperature of $540^{\circ}C$ and the increase of the annealing time up to 90 min.

  • The electromagnetic (EM) wave absorption properties of the $Fe_{73}Si_{16}B_7Nb_3Cu_1$ nanocrystalline powder mixed with 5 to 20 vol% of Ni-Zn ferrites has been investigated in a frequency range from 100MHz to 10GHz. Amorphous ribbons prepared by a planar flow casting process were pulverized and milled after annealing at 425 for 1 hour. The powder was mixed with a ferrite powder at various volume ratios to tape-cast into a 1.0mm thick sheet. Results showed that the EM wave absorption sheet with Ni-Zn ferrite powder reduced complex permittivity due to low dielectric constant of ferrite compared with nanocrystalline powder, while that with 5 vol% of ferrite showed relatively higher imaginary part of permeability. The sheet mixed with 5 vol% ferrite powder showed the best electromagnetic wave absorption properties at high frequency ranges, which resulted from the increased imaginary part of permeability due to reduced eddy current.

  • The oxidation of $Fe_{73}Si_{16}B_7Nb_3Cu_1$ nanocrystalline powder has been conducted to investigate its influence on the electromagnetic wave absorption characteristics of the soft magnetic material. Oxidation occurred primarily on the surface of nanocrystals. Oxidation reduced the real part of complex permeability due to the reduction of the relative volume of the powder, which otherwise contributes to the permeability. Oxidation reduced the absorption efficiency of the sheet at frequencies over 1GHz, indicating that the relative contribution of skin depth increments to the absorption was not significant. The pulverization and milling process lowered the optimum crystallization temperature of the material by $40{\sim}50^{\circ}C$ because of the internal energy accumulated during the fragmentation and powder thinning processes.
