The effect of reductants (Ti, Si, Al, Mn, Fe) addition into molten Borax has been studied on oxidation resistance and the growth of boronized layer formed during electro-boronizing on the substrate such as carbon steel and STS 430. Experiments have been carried out at the current density of 0.5 A/$\cm^2$ and in temperature range of 600~$1000^{\circ}C$ for 1~5 hours. The penetrated depth of the boron increased with addition of reductants (Ti, Si, Al) and decreased with addition of Mn and Fe. But excessive addition of reductants inhibited the boronizing due to an increase in viscosity of electrolyte. Oxidation resistance of the boronized carbon steel was improved but that of the boronized STS 430 decreased.

Advanced high strength steels undergo recrystallization annealing in reducing gas atmosphere before galvanizing to improve mechanical properties. The selective oxidations of elements such as Mn, Si, Cr and Al during annealing decrease wettability of liquid zinc, resulting in bare spots and other defects. In this work, Fe-3wt%Mn steel sheet was annealed at $780^{\circ}C$ for 1200 sec. in 5% $H_2-N_2$ atmosphere and then dipped into zinc bath held at $460^{\circ}C$, which contained 0.2wt% dissolved Al. MnO crystallines in the average size of 200 nm were formed on the surface after annealing. It is estimated that MnO has been detached into bath with the formation and growth of inhibition layer with longer immersion time during galvanizing. No evidence of aluminothermic reduction of MnO has been found in this study.
Twinning-induced plasticity (TWIP) steels have attracted great attention due to their excellent mechanical properties of high tensile strength (over 800MPa) and high ductility (over 50%), which result from the high strain hardening due to the mechanical twin formation during plastic deformation. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of annealing temperature and alloying elements on the mechanical properties of Fe-18Mn-0.6C TWIP steel. In 1.5%Al TWIP steel with 0.123%Ti content, the average recrystallized grain size was reduced to 2.5 ${\mu}m$ by cold rolling and annealing at $800^{\circ}C$ for 5 min, because of the pinning effect of the fine TiC carbides on grain coarsening. The tensile strength was decreased and the ductility was improved with the increase of the annealing temperature. However, a reversion of hardness and yield strength happened between $750^{\circ}C$ and $800^{\circ}C$ due to TiC and $M_3C$ type precipitation. 0.56% Ni added TWIP steel exhibited relatively lower yield strength, because Ni precipitates were not formed during the annealing process. When this specimen was annealed at $800^{\circ}C$ for 5min, the tensile strength and elongation were revealed at 1096MPa and 61.8%, respectively.
The influence of pre-strain on low cycle fatigue behavior of Fe-18Mn-0.05Al-0.6C TWIP steel was studied by conducting axial strain-controlled tests. As-received plates were deformed by rolling with reduction ratios of 10 and 30%, respectively. A triangular waveform with a constant frequency of 1 Hz was employed for low cycle fatigue test at the total strain amplitudes in the range of ${\pm}0.4\;{\sim}\;{\pm}0.6$ pct. The results showed that low-cycle fatigue life was strongly dependent on the amount of pre-strain as well as the strain amplitude. Increasing the amount of prestrain, the number of reversals to failure was significantly decreased at high strain amplitudes, but the effect was negligible at low strain amplitudes. A new model for predicting fatigue life of pre-strained body has been suggested by adding ${\Delta}E_{pre-strain}$ to the energy-based fatigue damage parameter. Also, high-cycle fatigue lives predicted using the low-cycle fatigue data well agreed with the experimental ones.

In order to gain better understanding of the selective surface oxidation and its influence on the galvanizability of a transformation-induced plasticity (TRIP) assisted steel containing 1.5 wt.% Si and 1.6 wt.% Mn, a model experiment has been carried out by depositing Si and Mn (each with a nominal thickness of 10 nm) in either monolayers or bilayers on a low-alloy interstitial-free (IF) steel sheet. After intercritical annealing at $800^{\circ}C$ in a $N_2$ ambient with a dew point of $-40^{\circ}C$, the surface scale formed on 590 MPa TRIP steel exhibited a microstructure similar to that of the scale formed on the Mn/Si bilayer-coated IF steel, consisting of $Mn_{2}SiO_{4}$ particles embedded in an amorphous $SiO_{2}$ film. The present study results indicated that, during the intercritical annealing process of 590 MPa TRIP steel, surface segregation of Si occurs first to form an amorphous $SiO_{2}$ film, which in turn accelerates the out-diffusion of Mn to form more stable Mn-Si oxide particles on the steel surface. During hot-dip galvanizing, particulate $Fe_{3}O_{4}$, MnO, and Si-Mn oxides were reduced more readily by Al in a Zn bath than the amorphous $SiO_{2}$ film. Therefore, in order to improve the galvanizability of 590 TRIP steel, it is most desirable to minimize the surface segregation of Si during the intercritical annealing process.
The microstructural changes of Fe-20Mn-12Cr-1Cu alloy have been studied during high temperature gas nitriding (HTGN) at the range of $1000^{\circ}C{\sim}1150^{\circ}C$ in an atmosphere of nitrogen gas. The mixed microstructure of austenite and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite of as-received alloy was changed to austenite single phase after HTGN treatment at the nitrogen-permeated surface layer, however the interior region that was not affected nitrogen permeation remained the structure of austenite and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite. With raising the HTGN treatment temperature, the concentration and permeation depth of nitrogen, which is known as the austenite stabilizing element, were increased. Accordingly, the depth of austenite single phase region was increased. The outmost surface of HTGN treated alloy at $1000^{\circ}C$ appeared Cr nitride. And this was in good agreement with the thermodynamically calculated phase diagram. The grain growth was delayed after HTGN treatment temperature ranges of $1000^{\circ}C{\sim}1100^{\circ}C$ due to the grain boundary precipitates. For the HTGN treatment temperature of $1150^{\circ}C$, the fine grain region was shown at the near surface due to the grain boundary precipitates, however, owing to the depletion of grain boundary precipitates, coarse grain was appeared at the depth far from the surface. This depletion may come from the strong affinity between nitrogen and substitutional element of Al and Ti leading the diffusion of these elements from interior to surface. Because of the nitrogen dissolution at the nitrogen-permeated surface layer by HTGN treatment, the surface hardness was increased above 150 Hv compared to the interior region that was consisted with the mixed microstructure of austenite and ${\varepsilon}$-martensite.
Mechanical properties and microstructures of medium carbon high manganese steels were investigated in terms of alloying elements such as Mn, C contents, and heat treatment condition. Austenite volume fraction was increased with increasing Mn content, leading to hardness decrease in the range of Mn content of above 10% after quenching and tempering. Such results are also supported by microstructural analysis and X-ray diffraction in that the increase in mangaese content results in the increase in austenite fraction. Studies on tempering condition indicated that not only hardness and tensile strength but also charpy impact values were reduced as tempering temperature were raised in the range of $250^{\circ}C$ to $600^{\circ}C$. It was also observed that fracture mode was changed from dimple to intergranular fracture. Such results are thought to be due to very fine carbide precipitation or impurity segreagation at grain boundaries as tempering temperature goes up. Heat treatment of Fe-5Mn-2Si-1Al-0.4C can be optimized by austenitizing at $850^{\circ}C$, air cooling and tempering at $250^{\circ}C$, resulting in 1950 MPa in Tensile strength, 17% in elongation and 23.3 $J/cm^2$ in charpy impact energy with high work hardening characteristics.
The graphitization is affected by the addition of small amount of the elements, such as Si, Al, Ni, B, Cr and Mn etc. Boron is well known as the most effective element for the graphitization of cementite in high carbon steels. But a study on quantitative analysis of B effect on the graphitization is few reported. Therefore the effect of boron addition in Fe-0.65%C-1.0%Si-0.5%Mn steels on the graphitization is investigated quantitatively using hardness tester, optical microscope and scanning electron microscope, neutron induced microscopic radiography. The graphitization in high carbon steels is promoted with 0.003~0.005%B addition. But the graphitization in steels which has no boron takes long holding time at $680{\sim}720^{\circ}C$. The hardness of quenched steel containing 0.003%B is higher than that of 0.005%B added steel due to complete dissolution of fine graphites into the austenite. The 0.003%B added high carbon steel graphitized at $680^{\circ}C$ for 25hr is useful steel for the agricultural implements and automobile parts which needed a good formability and high hardness.
The characteristics of selective oxidation prior to hot-dip galvanizing with the annealing atmosphere dew point and chemical composition in dual-phase steels and their effect on the inhibition layer formation relevant to coating adhesion have been studied using a combination of electron microscopic and surface analytical techniques. The annealed and also galvanized samples of 3 kinds of Si/Mn ratios with varied amounts of Si addition were prepared by galvanizing simulator. The dew point was controlled at soaking temperature $800^{\circ}C$ in 15%$H_2$ -85%$N_2$ atmosphere. It was shown that good adhesion factors were mainly uniformity of oxide particle distribution of low number density and low Si/Mn ratio prior to hot-dip galvanizing. Their effect was the greatly reduced coating bare spots and the formation of uniform inhibition layer leading to good adhesion of Zn overlay. The mechanism of good adhesion is suggested by two processes: the formation of inhibition layer on the oxide free surface uncovered with no $SiO_2$-containing particles in particular, and the inhibition layer bridging of oxide particles. The growth of inhibition layer was enhanced markedly by the delayed reaction of Fe and Al with the increase of Si/Mn ratio.
This study was aimed to evaluate the weldability and optimize the welding conditions for flash butt welding of 780MPa grade steel applied to the automotive bumper reinforcement. And then the relationship between the welding conditions and the joint performance relating specifically to coil-joining steel would be established. The effect of welding conditions between flashing and upsetting process was elucidated. Microstructure observation of the joint indicated that the decarburized band was mainly changed with upsetting process. Width of HAZ was also related to the upsetting conditions rather than the flashing conditions. Generally maximum hardness at HAZ was correlated with $C_{eq}$ of steel and the empirical relationship was obtained to estimate the HAZ properties. Tensile elongation at the joint was usually decreased with increasing the initial clamping distance. Investigation of fracture surface after tensile and bending tests reveal that the origin of cracking at the joint was oxide inclusions composed of $SiO_2$, MnO, $Al_2$$O_3$, and/or FeO. The amount of inclusions was dependent on the composition ratio of Mn/Si in steel. If this ratio was above 4, the amount of inclusions was low and then the resistance to cracking at the joint was enough to maintain the joint performance. It was obtained that the flashing process influenced the conditions for the energy input to establish uniform or non-uniform molten layer, while the upsetting conditions influenced the joint strength. Heat input variable during flashing process was also discussed with the joint properties.
