  • The addition of a large amount of alloying elements reduces the compactibility and increases the compacting pressure, thereby shortening the life of the compacting die and increasing the process cost of commercial PM steel. In this study, the characteristic changes of Fe-Mo-P, Fe-Mn-P, and Fe-Mo-Mn-P alloys are investigated according to the Si contents to replace the expensive elements, such as Ni. All compacts with different Si contents are fabricated with the same green densities of 7.0 and $7.2g/cm^3$. The transverse rupture strength (TRS) and sintered density are measured using the specimens obtained through the sintering process. The sintered density tends to decrease, whereas the TRS increases as the Si content increases. The TRS of the sintered specimen compacted with $7.2g/cm^3$ is twice as high as that compacted with $7.0g/cm^3$.

  • The mineral content of Dolowe, which were prepared in the laboratory and marketed Korean products of Dolwoe, Japanese product of Dolwoe and Korean-roasted products of Dolwoe were analysed and compared. Dolwoe-leaf tea had high mineral content of Ca, Mg, Mn and Cu, while Dolwone-stem tea had high mineral content of K, Na and Fe. Especially in the ash of Dolwoe-stem tea showed the highest mineral content of K (33.4%) Dolwoe teas were extracted for 5 minutes as ratio of $1,000m{\ell}$ boiling water to 4g Dolwoe tea (250: 1, v/w). Comparing the ratio of extraction of minerals in Dolwoe tea made by us and marketed Dolwoe products, K was the most abundant element of all extractions with the rate of $83.2%{\sim}96.3%$ followed by Mg with $44.8%{\sim}62.2%$, Ca with $23.1%{\sim}64.4%$ and Na with $6.3%{\sim}55.6%$. On the other hand Mn, Fe and Cu were extracted in extremely small quantities.

  • A lean alloy is defined as a low alloy steel with a minimum amount of the alloying element that maintains the characteristics of the sintered alloy. It is well known that the addition of elements such as Cr, P, Si, or Mn improves the mechanical characteristics of the alloy, but decreases the sinterability. The mother alloy is used to avoid an oxidation reaction with the alloying elements of Cr, P, Si or Mn. The purpose of this study is to determine the change in the mechanical properties of Fe-P-Mo and Fe-P-Mn alloys as a result of the addition of Si. In this article, the Fe-P-Mo and Fe-P-Mn alloys to which Si is added are compacted at $7.0g/cm^3$ and then sintered in $H_2-N_2$ at $1120^{\circ}C$. The P around the macropores and large grains reduces due to the formation of $SiO_2$ as the Si content increases. This is caused by the increase in strength owing to reducing intergranular fracture by suppressing the reaction with oxygen.

  • To study the secretion of trace elements during early lactation, twelve lactating Murrah buffaloes were selected from the herd of the institute. The buffaloes were divided into two groups of six each. Buffaloes of group I were not injected and served as control. Buffaloes of group II received oxytocin injection (2.5 I.U.) intramuscularly for a period of five days for let down of milk. Milk samples were collected from both groups of buffaloes five days before, during and after the administration of oxytocin. Aliquots of milk samples from each buffalo were composited in proportion to their milk yield and used for analysis of trace elements in milk. In both the groups of buffaloes Cu, Mg, Fe, Zn and Mn contents did not vary significantly between animals. However, Ca levels varied significantly (p<0.01) between animals. Administration of oxytocin influenced (p<0.01) Cu, Mg, Zn, Fe and Mn secretion in milk. However, Ca secretion was not affected by oxytocin administration. Secretion of these elements also varied significantly during different days of the study. Zinc content of milk in the control group also varied significantly (p<0.01) during different days and periods of study indicating thereby no effect of oxytocin. The study indicated that administration of oxytocin increases Cu and Mn content and decreases Mg, Fe and Zn content without altering the Ca concentration of milk.

  • Chemical compositions of sphalerites from 25 gold and/or silver deposits in central Korea were obtained with an electron probe microanalyzer. The FeS contents of sphalerites depend generally upon the assemblage of associated iron sulphides (pyrite and/or pyrrhotite) especially. The sphalerites coexisting with pyrrhotite show a narrow range of FeS variation, but the sphalerites associated with pyrite and/or pyrrhotite have the variable and wide range of FeS contents. The sphalerites from Au-dominant deposits, which vary considerably in each deposit, are generally characterized by high CdS content and low MnS content. On the contrary, the sphalerites from Ag-dominant and Au-Ag deposits tend to be characterized by relatively high MnS and very low CdS content. Based upon the mineralogy, fluid inclusions and stable isotope data, the Au-dominant deposits were formed under higher temperature and deeper depth than the Ag-dominant and Au-Ag deposits. The results suggest the possibility that the diverse sources and evolution of ore fluid at the time of ore deposition are responsible for the deposition of Cd and Mn components in sphalerites.

  • The properties of electrical resistance of Mn-Co-Ni-Fe oxide-based thermistor with various Fe contents in sintering process at $1200^{\circ}$ to $1400^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours in air atmosphere for fabricating thermistor materials were investigated. The results were as follows: all samples showed single cubic spinel crystal structures in all region. The electrical conductivity is the highest thermistor sintered at $1300^{\circ}C$ for 4 hours. In general when the Fe content is increased except F-2, the resistivity increases and relatively the conductivity decreases. Particularly F-2 composition exhibited the highest electrical conductivity (1.4${\times}$$10^-3$${\textohm}cm) and relatively low B constant(2906K)

  • Sweet persimmon yield can be limited by soil pH. This study was performed to rapidly determine the optimal level of lime requirement in sweet persimmon field. Soil chemical properties such as Fe, Mn, and Zn were analyzed soil samples of 31 sweet persimmon fields at Gyeongnam Province every two months from April to October in 2008. The available Fe, Mn, and Zn content were significantly high top soil (76.5 mg $kg^{-1}$ for Fe, 46.1 mg $kg^{-1}$ for Mn, and 16.9 mg $kg^{-1}$ for Zn, respectively), and subsoil (55.5 mg $kg^{-1}$ for Fe, 35.9 mg $kg^{-1}$ for Mn, and 12.3 mg $kg^{-1}$ for Zn, respectively) in April. Furthermore, the Mn content was significantly decreased since April compared to other micronutrients. We found a significant negative correlation between soil pH and lime requirement (r=0.881, $p{\leq}0.001$ for top soil, and r=0.855, $p{\leq}0.001$ for subsoil). We suggest that a conversion factor is -171 top soil pH + 1,148 to lime requirement (kg $10a^{-1}$) for top soil, and -190 subsoil pH + 1,247 to lime requirement (kg $10a^{-1}$) for subsoil in sweet persimmon fields. These results supported that the improvement of lime requirement by soil pH value is necessary to rapidly apply to field, and prevent micronutrients over uptake by persimmon plant.

  • The effects of Mn and Co additions up to 0.6 and 2.0 wt% respectively and the amount of cold-rolled reduction on the thermal expansion coefficient (TEC) of powder rolled Fe-Ni Invar strips were investigated. The compacted strips were sintered, homogenized and cold-rolled to the final thickness of 0.8 mm, 0.65 mm and 0.4 mm. All the strips reached full density except the case of 0.8 mm sample which has a very few porosities. The interstitials which are well known to increase TEC were minimized to the level of 10 rpm C,5 and N,0 by the processing. TEC was found to decrease by increasing the cold reduction. The Mn content had little effect on the TEC. But in Fe-Ni-Co system, TEC decreased with Co content up to 0.4 wt% and then increased, yielding the minimum value of $0.2 {\times} 10-6/^{\circ}C$ at 0.4 wt% Co. This value is much lower than that of commercial Invar product. Such effect of Co is considered to be related with the maxiumum spontaneous- magnetostriction effect.
