  • This study was performed to investigate the influence of spraying condition to the coating layer properties of Fe-Cr-Ni-Mo-Si-B alloy using the HVOF. The investigations, such as thickness measurement, surface roughness, hardness, friction coefficient, resistance of corrosion were carried out. Matrix is prepared by gritting and coating layer is made of Fe-Cr-Ni-Mo-Si-B alloy powder using HVOF. Alumina gritting layers are superior to steel gritting layers. The less spaying distance, the more coating layer properties confirmed. The optimum spraying condition, in this study, was proved as 13inch spraying distance with feed rate 350rpm (78g/min).

  • Effects of alloying elements on the surface characteristics of Fe-38Al intermetallic compounds were investigated using potentiostat. The specimens were casted by the vacuum arc melting. The subsequent homogenization and the stabilization led to the homogeneous DO$_3$ structure of the specimen. After the corrosion tests, the surface of the tested specimen was observed by the optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy(SEM). For Fe-38 at.% Al intermetallic compound, the addition of Cr and Mo proved to be beneficial in decreasing the grain boundary attack by decreasing the active current density. Addition of Band Nb resulted in a higher active current density and also a higher passive current density. These results indicated the role of Cr and Mo in improving the pitting corrosion resistance of Fe-38 at.%Al intermetallic compound. Band Nb addition to Fe-38 at.%Al accelerated the granular corrosion. Fe-38 at.%Al containing Cr and Mo showed remarkably improved pitting corrosion resistance in comparison with Band Nb addition to Fe-38 at. %Al.

  • The AISI 216L stainless steel with a composition of Fe-16Cr-6Ni-6Mn-1.7Mo (wt.%) was oxidized at $700{\sim}900^{\circ}C$ in air for 100 h. At $700^{\circ}C$, a thin $Mn_{1.5}Cr_{1.5}O_4$ oxide layer with a thickness of $0.4{\mu}m$ formed. At $800^{\circ}C$, an outer thin $Fe_2O_3$ oxide layer and a thick inner $FeCr_2O_4$ oxide layer with a total thickness of $30{\mu}m$ formed. The non-adherent scale formed at $800^{\circ}C$ was susceptible to cracking. At $900^{\circ}C$, an outer thin $Fe_2O_3$ oxide layer and a thick inner $Mn_{1.5}Cr_{1.5}O_4$ oxide layer formed, whose total thickness was $10{\sim}15{\mu}m$. The scales formed at $900^{\circ}C$ were non-adherent and susceptible to cracking. 216 L stainless steel oxidized faster than 316 L stainless steel, owing to the increment of the Mn content and the decrement of Ni content.

  • Two kinds of steels whose compositions were Fe-34.4Cr-14.5Ni-2.5Mo-0.4W-0.4Mn-0.5Si-(0.009 or 0.35)S (wt.%) were centrifugally cast, and oxidized at $900^{\circ}C$ for 50-350 h in order to find the effect of sulfur on the high-temperature oxidation of Fe-34.4Cr-14.5Ni-2.5Mo-0.4W-0.4Mn-0.5Si-(0.009 or 0.35)S (wt.%) alloys. These alloys formed oxide scales that consisted primarily of $Cr_2O_3$ as the major oxide and $Cr_2MnO_4$ as the minor one through preferential oxidation of Cr and Mn. They additionally formed $SiO_2$ particles around the scale/alloy interface as well as inside the matrices. The high affinity of Mn with S led to the formation of scattered MnS inclusions particularly in the 0.35S-containing cast alloy. Sulfur was harmful to the oxidation resistance, because it deteriorated the scale/alloy adherence so as to accerelate the adherence and compactness of the formed scales.

  • The effects of alloying elements, Cr, Mo, and N on repassivation characteristics of stainless steels were investigated by using the abrading electrode technique and a.c impedance spectroscopy. The role of alloying elements on the stability of passive film and their repassivation characteristics were examined using alloy steels such as Fe-Cr, Fe-Cr-Mo, 304, 304LN, 316, and 316LN. The electrochemical characteristics of the passive film were investigated by in-situ d.c. and a.c. electrochemical methods. Localized corrosion resistance is believed to have much to do with the stability and repassivation characteristics of the passive film. The effects of alloying elements on the current transients and repassivation kinetics were systematically examined by using the abrading electrode technique and a.c. impedance spectroscopy. The experimental results were analyzed in order to elucidate the relationship between passive film stability, repassivation characteristics, and alloying elements.

  • We investigated the crystallographic and magnetic properties of double perovskite $Sr_2Fe_{l-x}Cr_{x}MoO_{6}$ (x=0.0, 0.01, 0.03, 0.05, and 0.10). Mossbauer spectra of the $Sr_2Fe_{l-x}Cr_{x}MoO_{6}$ have been taken at various temperatures ranging from 15 to 415 K. As the temperature increased towards $T_{c}$(415 K), the Mossbauer spectra showed line broadening and 1, 6 and 3, 4 line-width differences because of anisotropic hyperfine field fluctuation. The Mossbauer spectra indicated that an anisotropic field fluctuation of +H ( $P_{+}$=0.85) was greater than that of -H ($P_{-}$=0.15). We also calculated the field fluctuation frequency factors and the temperature dependence of anisotropy energies from its relaxation rate. We interpreted the effect of Cr ($t^3$$_{2g}$) doping as a decrease in the anisotropy energy.

  • The removal of oxygen during sintering by carbothermic reduction was studied for steel compacts Fe-Cr-Mo-C and Fe-Mo-C prepared from prealloyed powders. The compacts were prepared by pressing at 600 and 1000 MPa and sintering at 1100 and $1300^{\circ}C$ in vacuum. It showed that for the Cr-Mo steel, deoxidation strongly depends on the sintering temperature, in contrast to the plain Mo steel; at $1300^{\circ}C$ very low oxygen levels were measured with the standard density compact while at high density still significant oxygen is contained. This indicates inhibition of final deoxidation by pore closure, but apparently without adverse effect on the mechanical properties.
